Audio Version of Greta’s Book Now Available

For those who like to listen to podcasts and books, our justifiably much-adored Greta Christina reports that the audio version of her book, in her own voice, is now available. And she includes this little blurb that makes me incredibly jealous:

“Greta Christina’s analysis of religion is acute and witty, and at the same time fair and compassionate. And I’m jealous: I sure wish I could write as well as she does.”

-Alan Sokal, Professor of Physics, New York University

Oh man, to get a blurb from Sokal is way too cool. Sokal is responsible for one of the great hoaxes of my lifetime when he showed the total vacuity of postmodern subjectivism by submitting nothing but a word salad for publication to the journal Social Text and it was accepted. You can read about the whole thing here.

Barton says that it wasn’t actually word salad – there’s a hidden text from the bible – that was the real prank. I just made that up, so I know it’s true!

BTW – I bought and downloaded it last night; the audio’s good and she’s a good reader! (obviously she knows the material!) It’s right up in my favorite audiobooks along with “God is Not Great” (hearing Hitch’s sneer when he says “burning bush…” still makes me giggle)

I’ve had my (considerable) differences with Hitchens on a number of issues, but his skill as an orator was incomparable, and when he was right about something he was a joy to listen to. I was greatly ensaddened when I started listening to ‘Arguably’ – I hadn’t realized the obvious, that of course there was no way he could have read it himself.

What perfect timing. I was just wondering what I was going to get with this month’s Audible credit.

    Added to cart!

    My review on iTunes:

Not simply a blast of invective – there’s a tightly argued truckload of humanist reasoning behind it. But, yeah, some of the things Greta’s angry about also had pink steam coming out of my ears.

Normally I steer away from audiobooks read by the author (except for Hitchen’s “God is Not Great” which I will also review) but Great Christina’s delivery is excellent. Very clear, tight, pitched right in the sweet spot for even poor playback speakers or earbuds, well-paced, and ANGRY. Her sincerity comes through like a playful kick in the groin. If I were a believer and had to listen to this, I’d be feeling very very small and ashamed of my silliness.

#100 – What makes ME angry?? When posting a review on iTunes store, it says at the bottom:
“Do not use language that can be construed as hateful, especially in regards to lifestyle, religion, or race.”
Once again, religion gets singled out for special privilege. Yeah, we all understand that racist, sexist, homophobic, or other speech is inapproprite. But how much do you want to bet someone is going to scream and say that criticism of religion is hateful?

    Strongly recommended.
