Court Upholds Hawaii Ban on Same Sex Marriage

A federal district court has upheld Hawaii’s ban on same-sex marriage, which was passed by popular referendum. The state then legalized civil unions that apparently offer all the same rights at the state level, but not federal rights like the right to change immigration status. You can read the full ruling here.

Romney Courts the Crazies

Mitt Romney continues to kiss the rings of every whackjob on the right he can find. While I was in Denver last week, so was Romney, meeting with Gary Bauer, James Dobson, Tony Perkins and Jerry Boykin. Boykin is the worst of this very bad group, for reasons I’ve documented on this blog many times before. But Right Wing Watch puts it all in one place.

Wingnut on Wingnut Crime: McCarthy vs Gaffney

Frank Gaffney and Andrew McCarthy are partners-in-stupid when it comes to their ridiculously paranoid claims that America is on the verge of being taken over by Sharia law. But Gaffney is also a birther and claims that Obama is likely a Muslim rather than a Christian. So when McCarthy and Gaffney held a joint press conference to defend Michele Bachmann’s loopy claims of Muslim Brotherhood infiltration of the government, McCarthy called those ideas “nutty” and “stupid” but then tried to pretend he wasn’t talking about Gaffney.

Missouri Passes Bad Religious Amendment

I’m sure you know by now that Missouri voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum on Tuesday that purported to supporta “right to pray” — a right that is already protected, of course. But the law is a trojan horse that will inevitably lead to serious lawsuits. Here’s the relevant text of the amendment:

Thunderfoot’s Unethical Obsession

As everyone who reads this network is no doubt aware, on July 1 we made the decision to remove Thunderfoot from the Freethought Blogs network, only a short time after he had joined. There is no need to rehash again why that was done because it is not relevant to what has subsequently come to light about his reaction to that decision.

Jay Sekulow: Shameless Liar

Jay Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice is a very accomplished attorney. And about 20 years ago, I got to know his brother Scott slightly, who countered my strong criticism of his brother by insisting to me that he was a good, decent man. I call bullshit. Jay Sekulow is a shameless liar, as evidenced by this screed on his radio show:

How the Media Promotes Non-Existent ‘Gaffes’

Michael Brendan Dougherty, writing at The American Conservative, makes a good point about how the media helps the campaigns promote absurd “gaffes” that are really just distortions of what was said. He points to two obvious examples — the Democrats using Romney’s “I like being able to fire people” comment entirely out of context and the Republicans using Obama’s “you did not make that” comment entirely out of context — to show how the media narrative helps the campaigns engage in such dishonesty:
