Rep. Kelly: Contraception Mandate Like Terrorism

On August 1, the mandate that insurance companies provide contraception coverage to everyone on their rolls, even if their employer does not include it in their group policy, went into effect. And that sent the right wing into a tizzy. Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania says it’s just like Pearl Harbor and 9/11:

“I know in your mind you can think of times when America was attacked. One is December 7th, that’s Pearl Harbor day. The other is September 11th, and that’s the day of the terrorist attack,” Kelly said at a press conference on Capitol Hill. “I want you to remember August the 1st, 2012, the attack on our religious freedom. That is a day that will live in infamy, along with those other dates.”

Well as long as you’re being rational about this.

We are the only industrialized nation that expects employers to cover the cost of people’s health insurance. If any case exposes the fallacy of this plan, it’s the rightwing freakout over contraception coverage. So, now it’s an attack on religious freedom that employers cannot dictate what health care decisions women can make? Why should we allow employers to have control over any aspects of our health care? Last time I checked, slavery was outlawed in this country ahd our employers don’t own our bodies, male or female.

Wingers like Kelly are making the case for single payer with ever word that comes out of their mouths.

I’m sure they’d be making the same ridiculous claims if we had a more standard government run system instead.

    Who Knows?

I like Senator Daniel Inouye’s response.

Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii said Rep. Mike Kelly’s comments were “misguided.”

“I witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor and had the privilege of serving in the United States Army during World War II,” Inouye, 87, who will celebrate 50 years as a senator in January, said in a statement.

“It is complete nonsense to suggest that a matter discussed, debated, and approved by the Congress and the President is akin to a surprise attack that killed nearly 2,500 people and launched our nation into the second World War.”

Of course, Rep. Kelly doubles down on the stupid.

    Okay, let’s try this again…

Coming so soon after a REAL terrorist attack against innocent Americans, in a place of worship, this lame attempt to compare a health-insurance rule to 9/11 is even more callous and insulting than it would normally be.

Oh, and speaking of terrorism, remind me again which party coined the phrase “Second Amendment solution?”

There is nothing more terrifying than sexual autonomy for women. Who knows what they might do when they can have sex without consequences. /sarcasm, just in case anyone didn’t realise.

Rep. Kelly made his comment and defense of it against Sen. Inouye’s criticisms prior to the massacre in the Wisconsin Sikh temple.

the attack on our religious freedom.

If you don’t want to use contraception don’t use it. I see it as more of an attack on religious authoritarianism that has you so up in arms, it’s getting harder for you to force your stupid bronze age beliefs on to people who disagree and you are pissed about that.

    Nonsense! 9/11 is .81 recurring, so 100 times 9/11 is 81.81 recurring.
