Billy Graham: God Should Destroy America

Billy Graham recently sent out a fundraising letter with a quote from his wife — which he agrees with — declaring America to be the second coming of Sodom and Gomorrah, worthy of being destroyed by God. Addicting Info has the text:

Some years ago, my wife, Ruth, was reading the draft of a book I was writing. When she finished a section describing the terrible downward spiral of our nation’s moral standards and the idolatry of worshiping false gods such as technology and sex, she startled me by exclaiming, “If God doesn’t punish America, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.”

I wonder what Ruth would think of America if she were alive today. In the years since she made that remark, millions of babies have been aborted and our nation seems largely unconcerned. Self-centered indulgence, pride, and a lack of shame over sin are now emblems of the American lifestyle.

Yeah, things were so much better 40 years ago when a powerful evangelist and the president of the United States could talk about those evil Jews conspiring against them in the Oval Office. Or 50 years ago, when we had whites-only lunch counters and women were in the kitchen where they belonged. Oh how tragic our expulsion from that garden of Eden reality.

And it just reminds me again of this brilliant clip from David Cross:

Isn’t this essentially the same thing Rev Jeremiah Wright said (in context) that created so much controversy for Pres. Obama?

Expecting the same level of outrage from conservative Christians any moment now…

  2. addiepray says

The same thing occurred to me- it’s a paraphrase of “God damn America”.
But when Billy Graham dies, we will be force fed endless encomiums about what a great patriot he was.

Graham is about to check out and has even more license than usual to spew nonsense. It’s consequence-free for him. This is less a death-bed conversion that it is a death-bed doubling-down: Let’s bet everything on the notion that God is a total prick and I’m his spineless minion.

  4. baal says

@#1 – it’s a similar argument in structure but Rev.Wright was up about the disparity in society and Rev.Graham is pissed that gays can exist openly in some places part of time and not get harassed or have to openly hate themselves. The subject of their comments flips it up. I’m also more ok with getting damned than getting punished. The later could happen to my body and that would make me said. The former can’t happen ever so it’s not quite as bad.

Must be that American exceptionalism we keep hearing so much about.

  6. Alverant says

#6 Well his god SHOULD apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah and all the other people he’s murdered in the OT.

Shouldn’t Graham’s comments be considered a terroristic threat?

  7. d cwilson says

Well, you see, Wright was talking about inequality between the races and classes. Graham is alluding to gays and abortion. Plus, he’s white.

So, when he talks about how God should “damn America”, it’s totally different.

  8. John Hinkle says

Self-centered indulgence, pride, and a lack of shame over sin are now emblems of the American lifestyle.

Wait. I think I know where he’s going with this. It took me a minute, but I’ve got it.

We. Need to send him. Money.

[Billy Graham's wife] startled [Billy Graham] by exclaiming, “If God doesn’t punish America, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Besides the hypocritical racism of conservative Christians calling out Barack Obama due to what Jeremiah Wright said, here the Grahams both also demonstrate another conservative Christian trait – they’re ignorance regarding the actual contents of the Bible since the lesson conveyed in the Sodom and Gomorrah story is not applicable to their argument.

Hypocritical since it’s long been an attribute of fundamentalism to use rhetoric equal to or even more damning of the U.S. than Jeremiah Wright. Hypocrisy which reverberates given the evidence Mr. Wright used such rhetoric regularly is non-existent whereas their use of such rhetoric is continual. And also hypocritical given Wright’s premises to reach his conclusion were sound, making for an arguable point whereas conservative Christians primarily depend on false premises to argue their conclusions about what the U.S. supposedly deserves from their god.

What? Have Americans been threatening to rape angels? Why hasn’t the mainstream media been covering this?

    Hasn’t that bastard died yet?

Many years ago, unfortunately none of the various afterlives wanted him so he got sent back.

Come on, Graham, you ancient hack. Get your sky fairy to bring it on! Its about time that it puts up or shuts up. You all have been milking the apocalypse bullshit for far too long. Shit or get off the pot.

Not to defend Reverend Graham but I seem to recall reading that he was senile. If true, it is doubtful that he wrote this; more likely, son Franklin wrote it and put his father’s name on it.

  16. anubisprime says

    Self righteous prick!

There will be some evangelists secretly and not so secretly that will be glad to see the grave of the cretin to dance on, they never forgave him for cozying up to the the Roman Catholics.
Some felt he actually betrayed Christ…go figure…just that he became very rich doing so and money talks in jeebus town, the jealousy is palpable.

Not many evangelist tears await his departure whatever!

  17. says

But, but, but, if gawd wants to destroy ‘Murka — and by conservatives’ own words Obama is going to be the destruction of ‘Murka — shouldn’t they be coming out to vote for Obama in droves?
Or is it that they want this destruction to come at the hands of a good (read, white) Christian (well, sort of kinda) job creator (debatable) like Mitt Romney?

  18. anubisprime says

    slc1 @ 16

it is doubtful that he wrote this; more likely, son Franklin wrote it and put his father’s name on it.

Well seeing as misquoting, plagiarism and quote mining are xian traits….especially the evangelical legion…a few lies are not unexpected cos in their atrophied minds the telling of little white fibs 4 jeebus inc. is actually the most righteous act they can do in their heroes name!

  19. says

The problem with this alleged idolatry of sex: We’re generally the ones in favor of demystifying it. It’s just something to enjoy responsibly and a preferred means of reproduction. Sex is natural, and most humans are naturally inclined to engage in it. Sex is something of the mundane world, to be understood and used for our benefit, not something to idolize.

People like Graham seem to consider sex more important than human lives. They’ll demonize a moral, productive human if he happens to practice a heretical form of sex instead of the idolized form, as if the morally neutral act were a grave sin that counteracts all the good a person does. They speak of the act of sex as if it were a sacred ritual with demanding taboos instead of just another human interaction. They want their perception of sex and gender roles to dominate our lives.

I do not for a minute believe that Chick-Fil-A’s inhospitable attitudes towards LGBT persons is on the same level as Sodom and Gomorrah’s hostile reception to complete strangers to those cities.

Now that he’s near the end of a life lived in the lap of luxury, I’m sure the destruction of america seems like a good idea to him. What a nihilist asshole.

Exactly what I was thinking. Bet his identity is just a fundraising prop now. This wasn’t his public style, but it fits the son to a T.

  24. says

“Exactly what I was thinking. Bet his identity is just a fundraising prop now. This wasn’t his public style, but it fits the son to a T.”

Dr. X; I think you’ve nailed it. Now, then, I notice you used the word, “public”. I’m guessing that Billy’s private life was a WHOLE lot different than his public life. That piece of shit son of his didn’t grow up in a Skinner Box.

  25. says

If Franklin did make this up he’s violating a couple of those Commandment thingies he thinks we’re supposed to follow: bearing false witness, by putting words in his parents’ mouths, and not honouring his father and mother.

  26. lsamaknight says

I feel it worth pointing out that the quote isn’t even original. I’ve heard it used (as a joke) in reference to late 19th Century, early 20th Century Shanghai and it wouldn’t surprise me if it was even older with just the location changing.

  27. dan4 says

For his America-bashing comments here, Congress should ask Graham to give back the Congressional Gold Medal the former gave the latter in 1996 (not that this is likely to happen, unfortunately).

  28. wholething says

RustD is correct. In Judges 19, an unnamed Levite stays at a stranger’s house when a mob arrives. The Levite offers his concubine and the man offers his virgin daughter but they insist on the Levite so he sends his concubine out who gets raped to death though she managed to crawl to the porch but nobody thought to help her. He takes his body home, hacks her into 12 pieces, puts a piece on 12 donkeys and sends them out to the lands of Israel. Then it gets worse. All the men gather because of this and they end up killing everybody and every animal in the towns of that area.

It’s basically the same story but they didn’t blame God for it.

  29. Michael Heath says

Re the speculation that this sort of response is more in line with the apple who fell somewhat away from the tree rather than Dad . . .

While possible I think we shouldn’t ignore how Fox News, viral conservative emails, and the politicization of evangelical and fundamentalist Christian has also changed individuals. As a fifty-two year old, I’ve observed mainstream conservatives who once soberly acted like Eisenhower and Gerald Ford a couple of decades ago transformed into spittle-flecked Fox News lovin’ Tea Partiers.

Because they’re older they’ve got time on their hands where they don’t watch the soaps, but instead Fox News – the #1 reality TV channel for oldsters. They’re also living longer and now tend to live in retirement communities rather than with people working to make a living which makes these issues abstract and surrounded with group think.

In addition, I think these religious denominations adopted a more political stance because they were losing adult male members. Adding a political element provided man-friendly drama and competition sorely lacking in these churches in past generations; it gave these men a tribe who liked to fight and hate while also feeding their Id and allowing them not to think. This last point is important since most people, even religionists, tend to put more of their thinking energies into more practical issues rather than religion or politics.

So from this perspective I’d argue Billy Graham, while obviously weaker of mind given his age, is most likely also just riding the tide on how evangelical and fundamentalist Christianity has changed in this country since the mid-20th century. Especially since preachers are not immune to this political transformation but instead now often a major influence within their flock; precisely because it’s benefitted their church with more committed male members than they’d have if they were still doing church like they were in the Northern states in the Eisenhower era.

    Re Heath @ #31

So from this perspective I’d argue Billy Graham, while obviously weaker of mind given his age, is most likely also just riding the tide on how evangelical and fundamentalist Christianity has changed in this country since the mid-20th century.

Certainly a plausible alternate hypothesis. However, I recall reading that Reverend Graham is more then just weaker of mind and is effectively senile. Obviously, the family has not been forthcoming as to his true condition so we don’t know.

Clearly Franklin Graham is far more extreme then his father ever was. While Graham pere made it his business to associate with both Rethuglican and Democratic presidents, Graham fils doesn’t bother. He’s in bed with the teabaggers.

I may be wrong about this but I seem to recall that both Graham and Jesse Jackson provided consul to President Clinton during the Lewinsky affair relative to the latter’s inability to control his sexual appetites (by the way, Kennedy was much worse, having prostitutes brought in off the streets of Washington to satisfy his urges).

    slc1:

“I may be wrong about this but I seem to recall that both Graham and Jesse Jackson provided consul to President Clinton during the Lewinsky affair relative to the latter’s inability to control his sexual appetites…”

Of course the SKKKrotalMurKKKinPatriotiKKK Front types would insist that Jackson was there to funnel numbers to Clinton for other hooers, not to slow him down.

If the KKKristian ReiKKK’s told us nothing else they have told us, ceaselessly, that the only way a child grows up with good christian values is if he comes from a two person, male dominated household where the wisdom, benificence and LOVE of the father is inculcated in their offspring.

FRANKLIN.FUCKING.GRAHAM., the product of just such a family. I’ve disliked Billy Graham for at least 50 years. I hate his sone.

  33. Michael Heath says

Franklin Graham to Billy Graham seems to correlate closely with how George W. Bush to H.W. Bush and Mitt to George Romney correlate. In all cases we see less capable sons, with less character, and more illiberal.
