Mikey Weinstein Caused the Aurora Shootings

In the race to see who can find the most ridiculous assignment of blame for the shootings in Aurora, I think we have a winner. It’s all Mikey Weinstein’s fault, according to his latest bit of ignorant hate mail.

Mr. Mikey Weintein, I am an American and a college graduate. I have a wife and children. I just finished reading your book. I am very active in my church, We are all believers in the truth that Jesus Christ as the sole Lord and Savior of fallen mankind. (John 14:6) The men in my church have been closely observing the fiendish activity of your Military Religioius Freedom Foundatiuon for some time now. We have seen the negative messages sent to you and your family and the MRFF. This e-mail will contain no misspellings or grammatical errors or profanity as you often receive in your so-called hate mail. As you can see I am an educated man with a profession requiring intelligence. This communciation will, however, beg you to disband immediately your black foundation as it is both unGodly, unChristian and unAmerican. I know that you do not believe that satan is real. But he is and you and your wife and children and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation and all of those who support it are either willing or ignorant slaves to the Dark One. We do not yet know which but we will find out soon. It doen’t really matter as you are all responsible for the evil you spread by trying to drive Christianity out of the armed services. All of you, especially you, Mr. Weinstein, as the charismatic and clever ring leader must stop your wickedness immediately and suit up to fight off your Master who is satan. (Ephesians 6:11) You have opened wide the door to the devil by denying America’s Chrisitan priorities of State. Your blasphemous “success” has grown steadily more dangerous as you rush so hard to work to deny Christ his rightful presence and prominence in our nation’s military. You have opened the door wide, wide, wide Mr. Weinstein for your ecstatic master, satan. Last Friday he bought a ticket to see the Batman movie in Colorado. Courtesy of you and your fellow travelers of pro-abortion, no guns allowed, judges get to decide everything and muslims are as good as Christians. And gays are “born that way”. And the U.S. is a “secular” nation where Christianity is just another “religion option” for our troops and the lost peoples of the many countries they are fighting in. How ignorant you are. Can you not see that if you take away Jesus there is a void which will happily be filled, and is filled, by satan? The blood of that movie theater is on all of your hands. Cease and desist, Mr Weinstein. Let Christ replace satan in your still beating heart. (Matthew 7:8)

Wow. Just wow.

For some reason, the bible-thumpers always seem to think that we atheists believe the bible (their favored version of it) is authoritative, and they need only cite passages to change our minds. As a life-long atheist, I find this baffling beyond measure.

Mikey Weinstein really wins in the nutty email contest. I’m glad he keeps doing his job.

ignorant slaves to the Dark One

Yes! and you will all bow down to me when his dark glory rules the land!!!1(eleventy)!!! bwahahahahahhaah.

On a more serious note, this email to Mikey W. points up exactly the kind of delusional (but not necessarily insane/ crazy/ mental illness) world some christians live in. Worst – you can see in this email that the sender see evil agents everywhere and that these evils agents are comming-right-for-you(tm). The ‘rational’ solution is to get live in perpetual fear and get ready to do violence.

Also, too, it will contain no paragraph breaks. Instead, it shall be a heady mixture of illogic, strawmen, dominionism, and bare-assed assertions, with no discernibly discrete ideas.

…judges get to decide everything and muslims are as good as Christians.

Hell’s bells, two non sequiturs in a row. Yay!

Activist judges. muslims (little m) are just as good as Christians (capital C). Why, it’s almost as if this gentleman had read some kind of right-wing talking point memo concerning the coddling of those who are not Christian.

Why is the decline of American dominance never attributed to failed economic, domestic, and foreign policies? It’s almost as if they were looking for a scapegoat, rather than placing the blame squarely where it belongs. “Why, our plutocratic economic policy would have worked perfectly, if it weren’t for you meddling secularist kids!”

3rd word “Weintein”… misspelled wrong. These are a dangerous breed of people in our midst, much like the militant militia types. He talks about himself and the ‘men of his church’ like they were some kind of lynch mob or something. The guy actually sounds like some buck toothed yokel rather than an educated person. Satan, being the source of all evil in the Universe, actually buys a ticket? Maybe he’s not so bad after all. I can’t ever recall God doing the same. Come to think of it, I don’t recall God ever just telling Satan that he’s a very naughty boy, and giving him a cease and desist letter. It becomes increasingly obvious that Satan is more powerful than God. Time to worship the alpha male, methinks.

It’s a little hard to follow but I think he is arguing that the Colorado shootings were done by some guy called Satan (the police have the wrong man) and that MRFF bought him the movie ticket. Is that accusation defamatory?

This is a very popular form of argument used by conservative Christians who can’t make an argument on the merits. They must instead avoid the premises used by their opponents and conjure up an argument that’s irrelevant of the issues at stake. They’re on God’s side therefore you must concede and submit your position regardless of whose making a superior or even convincing argument.

For example, I was a long-time moderate/liberal Republican in 2004, one who occasionally voted for Democrats and independents as far back as 1980 when I was 20 and voted for independent John Anderson for president (I also voted for Clinton in ’96). I made it clear with some meat-world associates, friends and family, I was voting for Sen. Kerry rather than President Bush. I advocated they do the same; that their country needed them to do so where I then made my case.

I received emails, both personal pleas to reconsider, and the start of a barrage of conservative viral emails which vividly exposed the bigotry, hatred, ignorance, delusion, dishonesty, nihilism, and tribalism of conservative Christians. Prior to that I never attributed these traits to the entire group, just some – primarily their leaders and a handful of yahoo extremists present in any group which we observe even here in this venue. I could no longer attribute those traits to the few after 2004, where of course the evidence since then has now showed up in surveys validating these are attributes of the general population of conservative Christians.

I responded to those emails with an argument which had me attempting to rebut the Bush advocates’ arguments – easy to do, and present my argument for why I thought the 2004 presidential and congressional elections was a critical juncture in our country and planet earth’s prospects and why that had me supporting a mediocre candidate like Sen. Kerry and Democrats in general rather than a horrendous candidate in President Bush.

The response back was in near-identical form as what Ed posts here, avoiding the merits of my argument, not even attempting to present premises and argue for their merit, but instead – Christians must vote for Bush and to do otherwise is to support Satan. Where these people knew I wasn’t a Christian and therefore told me I probably wouldn’t be convinced by their arguments because I was “spiritually blinded”; sometimes even Satan himself had deigned me worthy of his direct attention.

FWIW I still perceive the 2004 election remains the sole critical election in my lifetime. I think Democrats and liberals have an argument I’m wrong and that while one juncture exists, it was actually the 2000 presidential and Congressional election. I concede they’re right it effectively was though I also think non-Democrats had an excuse not realizing this in 2000, with no excuse in 2004.

  34. 34

Satan, as the book of Job makes clear is not God’s enemy he is his employee and drinking buddy who has the job of trying to get humans into hell.

    Michael Heath:

I concede they’re right it effectively was though I also think non-Democrats had an excuse not realizing this in 2000, with no excuse in 2004.

Precisely. I’ve had this same discussion with friends who insist the 2000 election was the most pivotal in our lifetimes. While the Supreme Court ruling was, perhaps, critical in-and-of itself, the election proper was not nearly as critical at the time. I mostly saw it as a decision between intelligence and jovial stupidity.

There’s no excuse for 2004, though.

Most of my conservative friends were like you — thoughtful and void of dogmatism. We wanted the same goals. We just had different ideas how to achieve them. President George W. Bush’s first term changed their minds. (Those that didn’t jump ship in 2000, in any case.)

Conservatives of today have completely different goals, goals which quite frankly scare the living fuck out of me. Call me bigoted, but I see conservatism (at least, as practiced by our far-right Republican party) as a character flaw.

But then, I see Reagan’s republicans as the new Democrats. It’s taken 30 years, but the Overton window has shifted so far to the right that I now support what I once abhorred (though only because there is no reasonable progressive option).

Why doesn’t Satan get a capital letter?

He sees capitalization as a mark of respect, which is why he writes “Christians” but “muslims”, and “God” but “satan”. What I really don’t understand is why “Dark One” gets caps when “satan” doesn’t.

Thank you for your grammatically almost-correct, unprofane missive.

It is truly a shame that you have chosen to invent a god incapable of overcoming the actions of his also-invented nemesis. Given the situation, I can understand your concern and frustration.

I would strongly advise you immediately invent a new god capable of addressing all your concerns. You could either chose to make the new god sufficiently powerful as to defeat any nemesis you might choose to invent to counter him/her or, more reasonably, don’t create an ‘evil one’ at all; thus leaving your new god with more time to devote to doing good.

Regarding your social concerns: “…pro-abortion, no guns allowed, judges get to decide everything and ‘muslims’ are as good as Christians. gays are “born that way”, and the U.S. is a “secular” nation where Christianity…” you could endow your new god with the values of loving kindness and the recognition that a blastula isn’t a human being, that giving morons unlimited firepower creates mass casualty situations, that recognizes those wisest among us are more reasonable arbiters of what constitutes ‘law’ than the mob, that states that there are no inherent advantages of one invented religion over another invented religion in which man creates flawed gods in his own flawed images, and who recognizes that the varieties of humanity come in as many variations as do all other aspects of creation. In doing so, you could then invent a church which, in addition to valuing & keeping these ‘new’ religious tenets, also recognizes that the American project was not founded upon your view of your invented religion [as historically revised by David Barton] but by people fleeing governments invented by people like you [and David Barton].

Sincerely, and in the name of reason,

Dear Corespondant with Mr. Weinstein* -

    “Mr. Mikey Weintein, -
I am an American and a college graduate. I have a wife and children. I just finished reading your book. I am very active in my church, We are all believers in the truth that Jesus Christ as the sole Lord and Savior of fallen mankind. (John 14:6)”

All this information is very nice, but irrelevant.

“The men in my church have been closely observing the fiendish activity of your Military Religioius Freedom Foundatiuon for some time now. We have seen the negative messages sent to you and your family and the MRFF”.

What, were the women in your church too busy baking, sewing and popping out babies to pay attention to this issue? Or are they excluded from any and all executive functions?

“This e-mail will contain no misspellings or grammatical errors or profanity as you often receive in your so-called hate mail”.

Except that isn’t the case, evidently. There are three spelling errors in the first two passages of yours I quoted above.
And by the way, it isn’t ‘so-called hate mail’, it is hate mail, from Christians in congregations not too dissimilar to your own
    .

“As you can see I am an educated man with a profession requiring intelligence”.

Again, all very nice but irrelevant. (This kind of detail is called ‘special pleading’ and is not viewed positively by the ‘rational’ community.

“This communciation will, however, beg you to disband immediately your black foundation as it is both unGodly, unChristian and unAmerican”.

If this is the purpose of your ‘communication’ make that your first sentence. It sounds more direct and honest. (And why not say ‘email’ or ‘letter’, rather than ‘communication’ it makes you sound pompous and/or as if you are trying to sound more educated than you really are. Having a poor education doesn’t make you stupid, but using ‘big words’ to try to pretend you are (well) educated does tend to make your reader doubt both your honesty and intelligence).
Also ‘both’ should be used with lists of two (such as: ‘both your honesty and intelligence’), when using a list of three why not try: ‘your foundation is not only ungodly (note the use of capitalisation), but anti-Christian, and also, unpatriotic’?

“I know that you do not believe that satan is real. But he is and you and your wife and children and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation and all of those who support it are either willing or ignorant slaves to the Dark One. We do not yet know which but we will find out soon”.

‘Satan’ is the name of a Christian deity. As a proper noun it should always be capitalised.
Satan is, you believe, real (much in the same way as a three year old thinks the tooth fairy is real), but there is absolutely no evidence to prove or disprove this assertion
    .

“It doen’t really matter as you are all responsible for the evil you spread by trying to drive Christianity out of the armed services”.

If Mr Weinstein isn’t responsible for the so-called ‘evil he spreads’, why would a just, loving God want to punish him, rather than the being he/she/it knows is responsible, Satan (as you clearly believe)?

“All of you, especially you, Mr. Weinstein, as the charismatic and clever ring leader must stop your wickedness immediately and suit up to fight off your Master who is satan. (Ephesians 6:11)

You haven’t given any reason why Mr Weinstein (the person not responsible) should do this. Perhaps you should direct your messages to the being actually responsible for the evil, Satan (which God, as a omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent supernatural being, clearly both condones and encourages, making he/she/it an accessory to the evil).

“You have opened wide the door to the devil by denying America’s Chrisitan priorities of State”.

Again, this is not Mr Weinstein’s fault. The principle of protecting religion from the state (and vice versa) was enshrined in the American Constitution in the 1780’s by the ‘Founding Fathers’.

“Your blasphemous “success” has grown steadily more dangerous as you rush so hard to work to deny Christ his rightful presence and prominence in our nation’s military”.

Except the Military, as an agent of the US Government, is not permitted constitutionally to promote any religion over any other one.
Keeping the government out of your personal religious beliefs is, I think you’ll agree, a very important principle that protects all religions. Part of this protection is that the Government can’t use the military to enforce orthodoxy to god(s) you feel are heretical
    .

“You have opened the door wide, wide, wide Mr. Weinstein for your ecstatic master, satan. Last Friday he bought a ticket to see the Batman movie in Colorado”.

You don’t mean literally, I assume. (Did Satan illegally claim to be a student to gain a half-price concession ticket?)

“Courtesy of you and your fellow travelers of pro-abortion, no guns allowed, judges get to decide everything and muslims are as good as Christians. And gays are “born that way”. And the U.S. is a “secular” nation where Christianity is just another “religion option” for our troops and the lost peoples of the many countries they are fighting in”.

Firstly, this ‘laundry list’ is more ‘special pleading’. I’m not sure what Mr. Weinstein’s attitude toward any of these issues are, and neither for that matter, do you. These are issues that are totally irrelevant to the argument you are trying to address. (Again ‘Muslim’ is a proper noun are should be capitalised).
Secondly, the ‘lost souls’ of foreign countries are not any of the US military’s business. The American Armed Forces are very good at what they do. Let religious practitioners do what they are good at. One cannot serve two masters.
Would you really want the US Military to become enforcers of the Government’s favoured religion? (Hypothetically, If Governor Romney becomes President, would you want the Military to ‘invade’ your church and force you to convert?)
If the answer is no, then you understand the reason why the framers of the US Constitution decided not to allow the Government to ‘officially endorse’ religious sect of any kind
    .

How ignorant you are. Can you not see that if you take away Jesus there is a void which will happily be filled, and is filled, by satan?

Jesus hasn’t been taken out of the hypothetical foreigners lives, they never believed in him in the first place. Others fill the so-called ‘void’ with other things. Some believe in other gods, others fall in love with other people, help the community around them, learn hobbies, or develop a wonder in the truths of the universe (the lattermost is called science). Your religion is only one way to create a feeling of satisfaction and contentment coupled with a positive effect on those around you.

The blood of that movie theater is on all of your hands. Cease and desist, Mr Weinstein. Let Christ replace satan in your still beating heart. (Matthew 7:8)

Firstly, theatres don’t have blood, animals do. Secondly, exactly how many hands does Mr Weinstein have? Do you think that he is some kind of Hindu god?

Why is the decline of American dominance never attributed to failed economic, domestic, and foreign policies?

Because these are folks who think they’re talking about American “exceptionalism,” when all they’re really claiming is American entitlement. You can’t admit to just plain human error in a failure to achieve what you feel you’re divinely entitled to- gotta be either god’s will or satan’s fault.
