Skeptics Greet Sylvia Browne

A group of skeptics protested a Sylvia Browne show at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas during TAM last week. I almost did the same thing when she was at a casino here in Michigan, but I didn’t have time to put it together. I think this should happen everywhere she appears.

    It’s a shame Robert Lancaster’s illness has prevented him from continuing his campaign against that fraud. He was providing a much-needed service.

    What I love about Atlantic City is that there are two kinds businesses that are within walking distance of every casino. The first ones are places offering psychic readings. The second ones are pawn shops that advertize “We By Gold”.

    Aww.

    From the title of the post, I was expecting more “greet,” less “protest.”

    Which I think would be kind of snarky cool. A small party of skeptics — bonus points if they are professional magicians — come up to Sylvia in a public place before the show and start going;

    “Hey, how’s the racket going! I fleeced fifty people down in Detroit just this weekend myself!”

    “I wanted to ask which brand of radio you were using. I lost contact with one of my spies in the crowd during a show last month and it was terribly embarrassing. Do you ever have dropouts when you are on stage?”

    “Oh, hi again Sylvia. I just wanted to say, cool use of the blind fish and name bait gambit in the first part of your show. I’ve never seen that combination used on a mark before.”

    Whatever harm Sylvia experiences from this greeting pales in comparison to the harm that she has caused.

    She deserves more greetings composed of pointing and laughing and truthful, proper exposure. As do all of those who peddle similar nineteenth century feel-good-because-death-is-not-permanent crapola.

    I am heartened by this news. I’d feel even better if it made her go away and STFU. Sadly, there are only two chances that she will; a fat one and a slim one.

    I hope they also stepped by the Flamingo and told people about that other fraud John Edwards.

    Sylvia who??

    And why is the fact that she is a “convicted felon” enough to convince people that she is bad news?

    A large proportion of the male black population of the US will be “convicted felons” before the system is through with them. Should they be disallowed from getting a job in Vegas? Or is it just people who tell fictional stories, like say, magicians or psychics, who should be the recipients of protests.

    In Vegas, of all places, where we all expect nothing less than sheer unadulterated straightforwardness in entertainment!
