Here’s a long and remarkable interview with George Carlin, as he recounts his life and career. Carlin is, in my view, the single greatest stand up comedian ever. He’s the gold standard, as the old cliche goes. He had it all in terms of thinking, writing and performing.

Carlin’s an intellectual hero of mine. Even so, that interview pulled me right in and I watched the entire thing. In particular I enjoyed how he got me back while talking about his tax problems. I was just thinking “Why the hell do I want to know about this?” when out he comes with it being the impetus to stay on the road, to continue to do specials, and to keep his presence out there.

Ditto with Captaintripps. I will admit to damaging young minds by exposing them to Mr. Carlin. Many years ago we used VHS tape to record batting practice for the high school baseball team I coached. This was during the first Gulf war, and we had a tape of an HBO special George did. We would put the tape in after the kids had left. Some kids would hear us laughing inside and come back in to see what was so damn funny. They left thinking their coaches were anarchistic crazy people. Some of them even thought about the topics George covered. Hated to have those damn kids thinking and questioning conventional wisdom.
