North Carolina isn’t the only place where pastors are calling for the murder of gay people, Kansas has them too. And I’m not talking about Fred Phelps, I’m talking about Pastor Curtis Knapp of New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca, Kansas, who said during a recent sermon:
“They should be put to death. That’s what happened in Israel. That’s why homosexuality wouldn’t have grown in Israel. It tends to limit conversions. It tends to limit people coming out of the closet. — ‘Oh, so you’re saying we should go out and start killing them, no?’ — I’m saying the government should. They won’t but they should. [You say], ‘oh, I can’t believe you you’re horrible. You’re a backwards neanderthal of a person.’ Is that what you’re calling scripture? Is God a neanderthal backwards.. in his morality. Is it his word or not? If it’s his word, he commanded it. It’s his idea, not mine. And I’m not ashamed of it.”
Yes, that’s what I’m calling “scripture” — utterly barbaric and bigoted, just like you.

I think that is a horrible slur against the Neanderthals, but otherwise, yeah, that’s pretty much what I think.

Do you think all this scum rising to the surface lately is them feeling emboldened or desperate? Or is just a random fluctuation that only looks like a trend?

@2 emptyell:
Desperate. Like the brief resurgence of the Klan during the last gasp of legalized segregation in the ’60s.

@ohio
I disagree. With the President approving of equal marriage and challenges to homophobia succeeding in the courts, preachers are being more extreme because they see gays as a threat to their power.

Or emboldened and desperate. The further the rest of the culture moves away from their barbarity, the more desperately they cling to it.

They’re desperate, but it’s only a matter of time before they become irrelevant. We’re on Step 3.
“First they ignore you, then they make fun of you, then they fight you, and then you win.”

Please tell me there’s also an “Empire Strikes Back Baptist Church” and a “Return Of The Jedi Baptist Church”.

I would bet my last dollar that in 50 years, long after the legalization of gay marriage, christians will be taking credit for bringing it about. Just like they take credit for ending slavery, womens suffrage, and civil rights.

Let’s see, a neanderthal backwards is a lahtrednaen. And NOBODY likes being called a lahtrednaen, let alone a tomnoddy or an attercop.

Nah, that was three churches ago. In fact, that’s probably why they called this one a “New Hope”.

I agree, they’re desperate. They see their side is losing. The comparison to the Klan in the 1960′s is apt. Note also that the same type of churches provided most of the Klan’s membership.
Liberal Christians did indeed provide a lot of impetus to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960′s. That included the Catholic hierarchy of the time. We could use a few of those folks now.

I think the trend is also driven by the new social media, and the lack of understanding by these fundies that their opinions are no longer considered appropriate by most people. They have heretofore lived in a relatively contained bubble, especially the preachers, where everyone agrees with them. So they put a taped sermon up on TEH Interwebs and suddenly get criticism.
Basically, we know this crap has been going on for a while, but it’s taken modern media to expose the full extent of the putridness.

Fine, let’s kill all the gay people.
Right after we kill all the Christian women who were not virgins on their wedding night.
