2,000 People Protest Bigoted NC Pastor

Remember Charles Worley, the demented North Carolina pastor who told his congregation that gay people should be rounded up and put into concentration camps? There was a huge protest outside his church this weekend, with 2,000 people showing up to condemn him.

Starting about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, more than 2,000 protesters descended on Newton, a small town of about 13,000 near Hickory. The town is about 12 miles from Providence Road Baptist Church, where Pastor Charles Worley gave a sermon May 13 that suggested gay people should be rounded up, placed in a sort of concentration camp, and left to die.

Sunday’s protest was organized by Appalachian State University student Laura Tipton and backed by a group calling itself Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate. Most of the protesters supported same-sex marriage and equal rights; about 100 people came to support Worley and to stand against homosexuality.

Tipton, who said she had never attended a protest before Sunday, organized it after seeing a YouTube video of Worley’s sermon.

That sermon, she said, “was a message of hate, a message of intolerance, a message of genocide, and not something we in this community could support.”

“Love and acceptance are two of the most important things you can give to someone else,” Tipton said. “You don’t need to hate somebody just because they’re different.”

There were about 100 people demonstrating in support, including other pastors:

One preacher, Billy Ball — who is pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Primrose, Ga. — spoke into a bullhorn, calling out Bible verses and calling on supporters of same-sex marriage to repent.

“God loves you, yes, he does,” Ball called out. “But he does not love your sin. And homosexuality is the most tolerated, petted, pampered sin in the United States of America.” …

Brad Cheatham, a member of Ball’s church, said the members of the church drove from Georgia to the protest in Newton — about a five-hour trek — because they believe homosexuality is a sin.

Cheatham held a sign that read: “Sodomites are vile, unnatural, and worthy of death, Romans 1:16-32.”

“It looks like I’m promoting killing homosexuals, but I’m not,” Cheatham said. “It is our responsibility as a saved person to save these sodomites. … There’s no incest pride event, no bestiality pride event, no adultery pride event … homosexuality is right in between incest and bestiality. God didn’t change his mind about that.”

Oh, of course not. Why would anyone think that saying that gay people are worth of death is a call to kill them? That would be crazy talk!

God hasn’t changed his mind on gay people any more than he’s changed his mind on pork, mixed fiber clothes or working on the Sabbath (aka sunset Friday through sunset Saturday.)

He’s confusing homosexuality with the love of money.

Sometimes the expression “religious scum” seems like a redundancy, although I have counterexamples in my own family. It seems, however, that the vast majority of religious people are content to look the other way when bigoted preachers spew their venom. After all, the preachers are citing Bible verses! (Read the damned book, people, and see the nonsense for yourselves!)

That may come as a surprise to heterosexual fornicators. In fact, I would bet money that there are more heterosexual fornicators in the United States than there are gays and lesbians (throw in bisexuals and I’d be less willing to make that bet).
The problem is that, as much as they try to push abstinence only sex education, conservative religionists have long ago lost the fight against straight fornication (though I will admit that the recent slut shaming and anti-contraception moves that they’ve made have shown they haven’t given up completely). With that battle lost, they’ve had to fight harder in this one. As they rightfully lose here, they’re only going to get more desperate and those who would have been more in the fringe at one time will be the ones we hear of more.

Seems to me that the pastor’s final solution to his problem has been tried before. And they’re still birthing gay babies in Germany…Jewish ones too.

Things like this assure me their asshole deity is not real.
If there were a “perfect, all-loving” god such as the one they pretend exists, he/she would:
    1. Have a commandment stating, roughly: “Don’t be a fucking douchebag.”
    2. Have a lot more to say in his “big book of no-nos that will send you to burn forever ‘n ever” about raping children* than the bedroom activities of two adults, regardless of their gender/s.

    * To my knowledge there is not a single verse in Bible-monster’s tome specifically telling people not to rape children. Anyone care to correct me? It seemed to be specific about lots of other things — don’t so much as pick up a stick on its special day of the week, the number of days for men to stay off the couch after his mom or sister has been bleeding from her unholy place — but somehow forgot to mention NOT RAPING CHILDREN.

I rather think that working on a “sabbath” is the “most tolerated, petted, pampered sin in the United States of America.” Where are these idiots when it comes to stoning people like that to death? Poor Pastor Ball, I just love watching hypocrites dig themselves in deeper with their selective prosecuting of the primitive laws from their precious “bible”.

I’ll be convinced these people are serious about “sin” when they round up their membership and fly to China to protest mixed fiber textiles. China’s ruling elite love that dissent stuff.

d cwilson beat me to it. The most tolerated, petted, pampered sin in the U.S. is without a doubt greed (one of the 7 deadlies, btw).

  11. says

Are there more homosexuals than tattoos? Admittedly, there are some double-dipping tattooed homosexuals. But I know some people who have several (me!) and there seem to be a lot of people publicly sinning that particular sin. Working on sunday is also a big one. And then there’s all those buddhists and idolaters.

homosexuality is the most tolerated, petted, pampered sin in the United States of America.

My pick for that title is the sin of heresy, which is not only enshrined as a Constitutional Right in the First Amendment, it i technically committed by every person every day – as there is surely some religious group in this country that finds your religious lifestyle choice, or lack thereof, as a form of heresy.

Fifthdentist – they would likely consider that to be covered by the anti-gay commands (if it’s an adult man with a young boy, lesbianism only rates a mention in the Bible when their god makes some women act against their “natural use”) or by the anti-fornication commands.

Other than that, the Bible is very clear on the subject of rape. If a damsel is raped but isn’t betrothed, then the rapist should pay her father and take her for his wife. It doesn’t mention an age restriction, so it seems that girls of any age can be bought this way.

Being that the Bible is the source for all true morality and that God is all that is good, this is truly just and moral.

Cheatham held a sign that read: “Sodomites are vile, unnatural, and worthy of death, Romans 1:16-32.”

I did a google search for Romans 1:16-32 and did not find that quote in any of the 1st 10 links. I did find lots of prohibitions that are commonly broken today by many.

I’m guessing that “sodomy”, meaning anal sex, is not the meaning here, but instead is “someone from Sodom”.

While Greed and Heresy are top contenders, I’m afraid my first thought was “what about Gluttony?” I’ll bet that little town has a nice, happy, busy little strip of fast food joints.

Upon reflection, though, I’d say that the most tolerated, petted, pampered ‘sin’ in the United States of America is … religion. Why else would this douchebag and his congregation not only think what they think, but think they ought to get away with saying it publicly and be exempt from criticism, too? Aw, shucks, this is our faith. Can’t shouldn’t argue with someone’s sacred faith, now, you know. Just humbly following the Lord…

Incest: as evidenced by the very christian spanish Hasburgs

Or maybe fans of the thrash band Sodom. Still a bit much, but it makes a little more sense than having it refer to a resident of a city that doesn’t exist anymore. Well, except the one in Canada…

  19. thebookofdave says

“It is our responsibility as a saved person to save these sodomites. … There’s no incest pride event, no bestiality pride event, no adultery pride event …”

Incest, bestiality, adultery, and self-righteous bigotry are nothing to be proud of. Practioners of the first three at least have the sense not to brag about it. The last ones will admit that tolerance for gays was their idea all along, but only after public ridicule becomes too great to bear and the most stubborn ones die of old age. You would think that people conditioned for shame and self-loathing from childhood would give in more easily to peer pressure, but that mostly happens within their own insulated group.

  20. spamamander, hellmart survivor says

C’mon, Jehovah loves incest. Who did Cain make babies with? (Some say there were neighboring tribes, and that Yahweh was the creator of the Hebrews specifically by tradition, and others say Cain musta gotten it on with sisters or his mom, but that’s ok because Gawd made their genes perfect). Don’t forget the heartwarming story of Job and his daughters who raped him after getting him drunk, because they couldn’t be arsed to find out if other human beings still existed. And of course Noah’s family, being the last 16 people on earth they had to have been repopulating with each other. It’s all good when gawd says you can!

Really? I’d have gone with usury.
