   I watched this when it aired, and I got the impression that this guy was too dense to really understand how badly Colbert was teasing him until about halfway through the interview. Also, I loved his line that went something like “Atheists have a bigger problem, how did something come from nothing? That’s why I’m a Creationist.”

   As if that’s not some sort of huge leap or anything. It’s perfectly logical that if you do not understand something about the origin of the universe, you can simply Make Shit Up!

   Speaking of rocks: I keep pray–er, hoping, that the Mars Rover will transmit photos of a rock on which is a fossil, of anything. A leaf, a bug, a fish, for that would deflate the creationist argument once and for all. Not that they have one to begin with.

   Why? If God can create life on Earth, why not on Mars? In fact, anything looking like a leaf, bug or fish would, it seems to me, finally be a bit of evidence for creationism: given what we know of Mars and of the contingencies of evolution, it’s vanishingly unlikely that anything remotely resembling any terrestrial multicellular organism has ever existed on Mars.

   That would border on being evidence FOR creationism.

   It is not possible to predict exactly what extra-terrestrial life, if humans are ever able to observe any (not the same thing as “if any exists”), will be like.

   However, given what we know about Mars, the idea that life identical to terrestrial vertebrates, insects, or vascular plants would have ever been present on Mars is not a good scientific idea.

   Evolution denial and “Biblical literalism” are completely ruled out to any reasonable degree by science.

   Some creationists deny the possibility of extra-terrestrial life, and some don’t.

   Evidence against creationism, massively more convincing than what you describe, is already available right here on Earth.

   They don’t care, because creationism is a dogma attached to an authoritarian social/political ideology, and ideology which requires reality denial as a loyalty gesture.

    This is the problem being civil to creationists. McLeroy isn’t used to being laughed at. You could see it in his eyes that, oops, something was not right.

    No, McLeroy is used to kissing babies in church basements and being told what a fine, god-fearing warrior for Jesus he is! Not scorned and mocked.

    Creationists need mocking. They have no valid argument nor are they interested in science, so, screw them. Mock, mock, mock!

    McLeroy’s best argument was “what do rocks dream” and he asked that in New York. Even Colbert couldn’t believe the blatant stupidity of the guy.

    I must say, though, hot lava on lava action gave me a few restless nights.
