In the wake of his idiotic comments about President Obama, Fort Knox has dropped Ted Nugent from a summer concert that will also feature REO Speedwagon and Styx. Those bands are actually touring together all summer. If President Obama really wants to use drones to help the country, that might suggest a target.

Oh pooh! “Fort Knox Concert” is some sort of musical thing. I was hoping it was a high altitude aircraft of some sort.

In 1981 REO Speedwagon and Styx were dominating rock album sales. Hi Infidelity and Paradise Theater were the two respective albums. I perceived this as the biggest threat rock music ever faced. And I generally like most classic rock, and even a few of each of these groups’ songs. But the quality of music getting marketed at this point was so poor music distributors pushed two albums that should have instead been sucked straight into the bargain bin.

Paradise Theater wasn’t a thoroughly horrible album. There were a few good songs on it. The truly world class shitbomb was Kilroy Was Here, which was so humiliating that they threw Dennis DeYoung out of the band for it (and justifiably so). Hi Infidelity, on the other hand, is one of the most unrelentingly godawful albums ever made. And it was the end of what was, prior to that, an ass-kicking rock band (157 Riverside Avenue, Ridin the Storm Out, Golden Country, etc). And I actually like some of Nugent’s old stuff. Stranglehold is an all-time classic. But the Damn Yankees, and everything else he’s done since then, was a crime against music.

All they need do is add Journey and Night Ranger and we’d truly have the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Pity, there was actually some kick ass music from the 80s. This ain’t it.

Hey, A-Ha and Men Without Hats at least sounded kinda sorta original in their time. Seriously, A-Ha had a really cool video, and MWH were refreshingly goofy, in addition to being the only band (AFAIK) ever to puy morris dancers in a video. I never bought any of their CDs, but they certainly don’t belong in the same category as Styx, REO, and (absolute WORST EVER) Blight Stranger. The latter were in fact so bad, and so full of themselves, that I couldn’t help thinking they were a failed act of satire.

Since they were the first band that caught my attention as a band, as opposed to random songs on the radio I liked, let’s not short shrift Styx too badly, their middle era stuff (Pieces of Eight, Grand Illusion) is still fairly listenable, though certainly not epic. Blue Collar Man still rocks. What the hell happened after that is anyone’s guess.
And to think, lurking virtually unknown during the early 80s to everyone but us alt-mag diehards were Pretenders, The Clash, U2, REM, Husker Du, Replacements, Psychedelic Furs, Elvis Costello, B-52s and many more who barely sniffed radio play if at all. Everyone running the radio stations then deserves a good flogging.

I’ve got a rock anthem playlist where Loverboy’s Turn Me Loose stands up well against the other songs in that set. It requires hi fidelity with the dial set on 11 to be appreciated.
The dearth of great music during the early-80s did provide me with an opportunity to explore the late-60s and very-early seventies, where I wasn’t yet a teen when that era’s music was released. That’s now my favorite era, there’s so much that stands up so well from that time. Levon Helm’s recent death had me watching several Youtube videos of The Band performing in Martin Scorsese’s Last Waltz.

And let’s not forget “Stop Making Sense” possibly the greatest live concert film produced… ever. I’m still in love you Tina. Actually (INMHFO) there was a reasonable amount of great music produced in the 80′s but as noted before, it really wasn’t getting much airtime.

Well, I lived through the 50′s and, I’m reasonably sure, the 60′s. There was some great music made in those days by some young brits from Liverpool and another group from Londonsorta. The 70′s bands that I listened to were the Eagles, Steely Dan, 10cc and pretty much anybody else whose music was hard to “bump” to.
I think “Death to Disco Night” could be updated and have it be the Jurassic Rockers turn.

They released a live album after Kilroy — Tommy Shaw left at that point — then they broke up altogether for several years, got back together, broke up again, etc. Styx without DeYoung didn’t happen until 1999.
Kilroy Was Here was a platinum album, not quite as successful as Paradise Theater, but a hit.
And… I loved it. Granted, I was 14.
