How Bigots Equivocate and Lie

Truth in Action Ministries offers a perfect example of how the fake family values groups equivocate in their rhetoric on equal rights for gay, lesbian and transgender people. In this video, they are discussing the new focus by the State Department on human rights for LGBT people in other countries.

Notice how they began by talking about, and quoting Hillary Clinton talking about, countries that criminalize homosexuality and then in the very next sentence they’ve suddenly translated that into promotion of homosexuality. As if those were the only two options, you either throw gay people in jail or put them to death, or you’re promoting homosexuality.

But it makes perfect sense to them. When your biggest problem with gays is that they’re allowed to exist at all, of course, anything that might stop locking them up or killing them is “promoting homosexuality”.

And this hatred and denial of reality extends into all of conservative Christianity in terms of its monolithic political advocacy. A primary objection to gays coming out of the closet and increasingly securing the protection of their rights, is the public schools acknowledging the existence of gays and families with gays, both in their curricula and teachers providing verbal perspective. In some cases they’ve successfully instituted policies at the local level which doesn’t allow teachers to criticize the bullying of gay kids by raising the issue of what was at the heart of the persecution – the victim being perceived as some form of GBLT.

Conservative Christians lobby at both the local and state level for their school systems to deny the existence of gay people, where they argue acknowledging the existence of gays and families headed by gays, especially if the schools fail to disparage these people and families is effectively the promotion of homosexuality. While I think they have point that such acknowledgement by the government in public schools is a passive sort of promotion when coupled to schools defending these people’s equal rights, this once again illustrates how conservative Christians are so incredibly hateful, reality-denying, bigots – where no other large group actively engages against gay people and their families at the volume they’re willing and capable of doing, and where no other large group provides justification for the persecution gay people and their families suffer.

Message distortion involves selectively processing or understanding a persuasive message in a way that favors one's original attitude (Cooper & Jahoda, 1947; Festinger, 1957; Kunda, 1990; Lord, Ross, & Lepper, 1979; Pomerantz, Chaiken, & Tordesillas, 1995).

It’s not just homosexuality. They have this Manichean viewpoint about everything. Earth Day becomes Promotion of Pagan Nature Worship Day, anything shy of the death penalty for minor infractions is “soft on crime”, etc.

The only exception to this rule of prohibition or promotion and nothing in between, of course, is the display of Christian symbols on public land. That somehow fits into the harmless gray middle.
