Dogs Playing Poker!

Radley Balko has long posted pictures of his dogs on Sunday evenings, but lately he’s opened it up to readers to send in pictures of their dogs. And this week’s picture has dogs playing poker. But the dog owner wants to make a couple of things very clear:

No animals were harmed during the making of this picture.

No poker was played on-line, so please have the authorities hold off on any raids.

I used to have a dog who played poker, but he consistently overplayed middle pair and couldn’t lay down a hand even when he should have known he was beaten. Plus he always slowrolled his opponents, though I think that had more to do with lacking an opposable thumb.

My dog was a terrible poker player – when he had a good hand, his tail would wag. (Garrison Keillor, circa 1997)

I’m beginning to suspect the guys only invite me over because my tail gives away what kind of hand I have.

Dogs tend to have obvious tells, too–panting, scratching, licking their balls and so forth.

Strictly speaking this one is a genetically engineered wolf:

Ultimate Bet had a TV ad that played on the tail/tell thing, featuring a bulldog man whose tail acted as a tell. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqpMtG5VSqQ As one of the comments notes this ad spoofed a Full Tilt ad from around the same time, including Jennifer Harman and Chris Ferguson stand-ins.

We come now to the final and most terrifying painting of the evening. To even gaze upon it is to go maaad….
