Mitt Romney must be smiling today. Rick Santorum is gone, Ron Paul is all but irrelevant and things have gotten so bad for Newt Gingrich that he’s bouncing checks. In fact, he bounced a check for the filing fee for the Utah Republican primary, for a lousy $500.
Five Republicans have filed the necessary papers and $500 fee to qualify for the June 26 Utah presidential primary election, but with Rick Santorum dropping out of the race Tuesday, only four will be on the ballot.
Or possibly three.
Newt Gingrich’s check bounced.
Utah Elections Director Mark Thomas said a designated agent for the Gingrich campaign brought the filing papers and a check for $500 in March, but the state was notified by the bank that the check had bounced. He said the office has tried to contact the Gingrich campaign through the telephone number and email provided on the application, but has not received a response.
Schadenfreude, party of one.

Maybe Utah officials could accept a nice diamond tennis bracelet from Tiffany’s instead of a check?

Maybe Gingrich was in the bathroom when they tried to call. And I’m sure that Gingrich doesn’t check his email every ten minutes. If the email got through the spam filter, that is.

And this is the guy who pretends to be the “ideas guy” for the Republican Party? What a sad ridiculous joke.
Let’s see how much attention the MSM pay this…

The Economist recently had an article about Blingrich; the title was “Deflating the Zeppellin.”

Newt’s reply:
I am ASTONISHED that a bank would make such an APPALLING claim that I have insufficient funds to cover this transaction. It is a GROSS AFFRONT to my sensibilities that the liberal media would even CONSIDER publishing a such a BASELESS accusation! It is BEYOND DESPICABLE, and I for one am gravely insulted. I DEMAND apologies from the liberal establishment, and will not REST until this injustice has been righted. The scandalous liberal forces that have run roughshod over the foundation of this great country must be…

I mean, he wasn’t trying before (although he’d take the nomination if it fell in his lap), but now he’s really not trying.
Pity, with Santorum out of the race he could be the go-to man for people who really, really hate Obama.

You’d think with all the autographed books and DVDs he’s been selling at his “campaign stops”, he’d have $500 in petty cash.

Not if it’s his own supporters buying up all that crap to boost the sales figures and ratings.

Hey, I live in Utah, why don’t they give me the bracelet and I will pay the $500 in cash out of my own pocket

This is a good example of how far more people can get political support by deftly exploiting the media in spite of lack of money and management skills. I think this is primarily due to the disaggregation of the media, especially the rise of cable news, along with the rise of the Internet. Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachmann, and Herman Cain are Exhibits B, C, and D. One could arguably put Donald Trump and Sarah Palin in this camp as well though both clearly saw such fame isn’t sufficient to go the distance.
So while such media exploitation still isn’t sufficient, I’d argue it’s trending in favor of poor candidates without broad support or deep-pocketed support.
