Here’s another example of how Rick Santorum picks and chooses which parts of Catholic doctrine he accepts and which he doesn’t. In May of last year, he came out in support of waterboarding and other forms of torture and said that John McCain just didn’t understand how well they worked.

Sheldon Adelson: World Class Whiner
You’d think that if you were one of the world’s richest men and you’re spending tens of millions of dollars to influence a political campaign, the last thing you could pull off is a martyr pose. But that’s exactly what Newt Gingrich sugar daddy Sheldon Adelson tries to do in a Forbes interview:

Jeffress Lies About School Prayer Ruling
Robert Jeffress of the Southern Baptist Convention keeps up the long tradition of Christian right propagandists flat out lying about the Supreme Court’s Engel v Vitale ruling. The usual line is that the decision banned prayer in public schools (it didn’t), but Jeffress adds another layer of dishonesty by adding the word “voluntary” to the …

Santorum: Left is ‘Death of Reason’
Rick Santorum continues his exploration of Orwellian newspeak with a speech at Oral Roberts University, where he told the gathered throng that the left is “the death of reason.” Seriously.

Alabama Bill for Released Time Creationism
Here’s a new approach to trying to get creationism into public schools. An Alabama legislator has submitted a bill to allow schools to offer academic credit for a released time program of creationist instruction that would take place off school property.

TN School Refuses to Print Editorial by Atheist
Lenoir City High School in Tennessee apparently has a real First Amendment problem on its hands. It has refused to allow the school newspaper to print an article by the editor of that paper that dealt with anti-atheist bigotry and the school’s pervasive Christian atmosphere.

Ginsburg to Retire in 2015?
Tom Goldstein of ScotusBlog, who follows the Supreme Court as closely as anyone in the country, offers some reasons why he thinks Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is likely to retire in 2015. Based on the assumption that President Obama is reelected, he says:

Jamila Bey on Being Black and Atheist
My friend Jamila Bey has an article in the New Humanist about being the rarity of being a black atheist in America, amusingly titled, “I may as well be a unicorn.” She makes the point that religion seems to be very deeply ingrained in African-American experience.

Judge Rules for Muslim in Atheist Assault
Christina posts over at JT’s place about an appalling case in Pennsylvania, where a judge has dismissed assault charges against a Muslim man after he attacked an atheist wearing a Muhammad costume during a parade. And he did so while blaming the victim for having provoked the attack. Here’s a local TV report on the …

Limbaugh on Santorum’s Satan Statement
Rush Limbaugh joined fellow wingnut radio host Michael Savage in discussing Rick Santorum’s bizarre Satan speech at Ave Maria University, but instead of agreeing with him, Rush seems to think it’s something that could cause problems for Santorum. And he invents a mythical double standard:

Romney’s Inauthentic Pandering
This video just cracks me up. It’s Mitt Romney trying far too hard to ingratiate himself with voters in Michigan, talking about how he loves lakes and cars — and how the trees are just the right height in Michigan. Huh? Yeah, exactly. He’s just so bad at trying to act like a human being. …

Santorum: Right to Privacy Doesn’t Exist
Rick Santorum claims, like nearly all conservatives, to be in favor of “smaller government.” That is a lie, of course, as he continues to prove every day that he advocates more and more restrictions on private morality in the name of his twisted religious views. And here he is in 2003 flatly declaring that there …

The Barbarism of the Old Testament
I have often been asked why I left Christianity. One of the primary reasons, something I found impossible to explain or reconcile, is the astonishing barbarism of the Old Testament conception of God. Philip Jenkins has a new book out, Laying Down the Sword: Why We Can’t Ignore the Bible’s Violent Verses, that explores that …

Loesch “Responds” on Virginia Medical Rape Law
After Charles Johnson correctly quoted Dana Loesch saying that it’s okay for Virginia to allow government-mandated rape of women seeking abortions because, after all, they allowed a man to insert something into their vaginas so it’s okay if the government does it, Loesch lashed out on Twitter with some vile accusations that might well be …
