Adelson Cuts Off Newt

Newt Gingrich’s “people-powered campaign” may be grinding to a halt. Sheldon Adelson, the third richest man in America and Newt’s main backer, has decided that $11 million is the limit and he’s not giving any more money. Could this finally be the stake through the heart of Newt’s zombie campaign? I think it was entirely unintentional from the start. I don’t think he ever thought he had a prayer of winning and his surge(s) surprised no one more than himself.

I guess Adelson lacks the sense of commitment to prevent Newt’s grandkids from growing up in an atheist country dominated by Muslim fundamentalists.

You don’t stake zombies, you shoot them in the head. You stake Vampires. Either would be a decent description of Newt’s campaign, depending on your perspective (it’s zombie moving long after it died, it’s a vampire feeding off Adelson’s bank account).

It is my information that Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle and well known competitive yachtsman, is the 3rd richest man in the US.

Too late. So Newt’s campaign will now infect the whole Republican party and turn everything into a zombie campaign. As long as it doesn’t jump the party barrier, there’s nothing to worry.

Michigan … shit; I’m still only in Michigan … Every time I think I’m gonna wake up back on the campaign trail. When I was home after my first book tour, it was worse. I’d wake up and there’d be nothing. I hardly said a word to my second wife, until I said “yes” to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting my name out there. I’m here a week now … waiting for a donation … getting hit with negative ads; every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute Santorum panders at CPAC, he gets stronger. Each time I looked around, the walls moved in a little tighter.

I thought Newt’s campaign was more like the Blob, oozing over everything in its path and digesting it.

And of course, to destroy the Blob, you need intense cold. That’s why Newt has reversed course and is now against anything that would curb global warming.

No, the entire Republican line-up is The Thing. Not what they seem to be, and when the’re revealed for what they are they turn into a hideous, devouring monster, concerned only with killing or converting everything around it until nothing is left but one enormous monster howling its hunger into the arctic night.

Hey. I wanted Newt to get the nod.

He would be sure bet to lose the presidantial race.

Even if he didn’t, the absolute disgrace that he and his cabinet would be would ensure that no conservative would be elected for at least one generation.

Adelson didn’t cut Newt off. Newt declined any more association with him. Or at least, when Newt began railing against “elites”, I assume he must have included billionaire casino barons.

“If Bush Jr. didn’t seal that deal, nobody will.”

An interesting analysis by, I think, Nate Silver showed that each generation’s party ID has a strong relationship to the president’s popularity at the time they turned voting age. Thanks to Bush Jr., the Republicans did indeed lose an entire generation.

But if we’re going to root for that outcome, I’d prefer a popular Democrat to yet another disaster of a Republican.

It’s semi-interesting because aside from a top few the list changes rapidly. The wealth of the super-rich is so tied up in stocks and bonds it can often vary dramatically based on how the market is doing.

ALthough it does seem you’re correct about Ellison being the third richest. I’d seen the stat about Adelson being the 3rd richest elsewhere and didn’t question it.

    Current top 10*

    1. Bill gates – $59B
    2. Warren Buffet – $39B
    3. Larry Ellison – $33B
    4. Charles Koch – $25B
    5. David Koch – $25B
    6. Christy Walton $24.5B
    7. George Soros – $22B
    8. Sheldon Adelson – $21.5B
    9. Jim Walton $21.1B
    10. Alice Walton $21B

    * – As an Arkansas resident I feel obligated to point out that if you consider the collective Walton fortune is almost $100B, but Sam Walton divided equally among his four children. If you consolidate the Waltons into one entity, you can add Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg to the top 10.

So by my back-of-the-envelope calculation, Adelson blowing $11 million on Newt’s campaign is the equivalent of a person with a net worth of $100,000 spending fifty bucks.

Those of us of more modest means can thus understand how Adelson feels totally ripped-off.

Oh my God: Newt is biracial: does his bases knows about this?

I had my Newt cut off when I was just a baby. I can’t imagine what it would be like to still be walking around with one of those things leeching off of me.

Rule number two of Zombieland is double tap. “In those moments when you’re not sure that the undead are really dead-dead, don’t get all stingy with your bullets. I mean one more clean shot to the head and you can avoid becoming a human happy meal. Woulda, shoulda, coulda.”

So, suffering from buyer’s remorse, Adelson has moved beyond the post-purchase rationalization stage and onto renouncement of the purchase. Please bring all your receipts to wicket when your number is called and remember that, since your candidate has faltered outside of the satisfaction guarantee period, a refund is not likely to be honoured.

If Newt was elected president there might well not BE another generation.

Heh. Newt’s campaign is a zombie? That brings the title Pride and Prejudice and Zombies irresistibly to mind. He’s got all three, now.
