Bryan Fischer Award Nominee: Liberty Counsel

Liberty Counsel is once again showing what may be the most ubiquitous personal trait of the wingnut tribe — hypocrisy. When gay people use their purchasing power and voice to push companies to favor equality, that’s “economic terrorism.” When wingnuts do the same thing to complain about a TV show, that’s just doing God’s work.

A Christian legal group applauds Lowe’s for standing by its decision to pull advertisements from a show on Muslims living in America. The North Carolina-based Charlotte Observer reports that Lowe’s will not change its decision to pull commercials from TLC’s All-American Muslim. The decision came after the Florida Family Association and the American Decency Association requested that constituents e-mail the show’s advertisers because of the program’s failure to present the lives of radical Islamic believers truthfully. The company has stood firm on its move, even after Muslim groups launched their own petition drive.

“We applaud Lowe’s for taking the steps that they think [are] correct by pulling the advertising,” says Matt Krause, litigation counsel for Liberty Counsel. “And if they don’t feel that the show or the contents of the show genuinely reflect the values of its customers, then we say that that’s terrific that they’re standing by their decision.”

Bryan Fischer will be so proud.

This sucks: I have a serious DIY habit that requires feeding, and a Lowe’s and a Home Depot within a mile of my place, which is paradise, except both of them have managed to piss me off (the CEO of HD said something stupid and privileged about Occupy recently).

Where the hell else can I buy lumber around here? (Or can I consider the Canadian border an adequate ethical disinfectant?)

Depending on where you are of course, try asking a contractor where they get theirs. Depending on the amounts you need they can often put you in touch with a lumber yard who sells it to construction sites.

They might be annoyed if you just want to buy a couple 2×4′s, but more than that you could probably do it.

Can’t they just pick up the remote and change to a Fox News channel if they want that?

For the good stuff, you could consider Rockler.

Otherwise, it’s true that most of the former local lumberyards etc. have been driven out by HD and Lowe’s. Which is a shame, although I got some good deals over the year as it happened.

Yeah, I’m never going to Lowe’s again. Think I might still have a tote bag with their logo on it, and if so, I’ll be tossing it as soon as I find it.

Whackjob Bryan Fischer has joined the HIV/AIDS denialism band, hosting an interview with former respectable scientist and now quack Peter Duesberg.

No they can’t! Lowes has sent agents into their homes and strapped them to their chairs with their eyelids pried open like Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange forcing them to watch the show in an endless loop.

Actually, their fear is probably that other people will be able to watch the show and they may get the impression that Muslims are human beings. We can’t allow that.

Don’t tell Liberty Council that, across the border, CBC-TV has been producing and running a cute, bridge-building comedy show as family entertainment called Little Mosque on the Prairie since January 2007. Although, I’m sure they already believe that Canada is a terrorist breeding ground in any case. Maybe, since broadcasts of the show could be inadvertently be received by innocent US viewers, CBC should consider displaying the message – “Warning: The following program contains scenes of Muslims portrayed as normal, peaceful, caring, rational citizens. Viewer discretion is advised.”
