Jewish Wingnut: Romney Will “Homosexualize” America

Rabbi Yehuda Levin, the absolutely insane Jewish wingnut so beloved by the extreme Christian right, tells a group of his fellow lunatics that if Mitt Romney is elected he will cause the “homosexualization” of America. Oh, and he’s not kosher.

This is the same guy who said that gay pride attendees who were stabbed by one of his ultra-orthodox pals in Jerusalem had it coming. He actually used the same language about gays that Hitler used about Jews, calling them a “cancer” on society that must be cut out.

Well, I think the “he” of “he is not kosher” is not Romney, it’s the rabbi of Levin’s analogy who force-feeds pork to others while avoiding it in his own diet. Levin is saying that Romney’s personal behavior (marital faithfulness, etc.) doesn’t make him moral if at the same time he’s promoting “a corrupt ideology” in the larger society.

Every time I hear that “he is not kosher” thing, it reminds me of the Monty Python sketch with the starving men in the lifeboat, deciding who they’re going to kill and eat. One man says he won’t eat another one because the other is “not kosher.” Someone else pipes up, “That depends how we kill him, sir.”

The violent misogyny and homophobia at the heart of judaism, islam and xtianity is absolutely indistinguishable. In some ways it’s just as well they all hate each other almost as much.

Funny, in our online community, when the Phelps’ had their tires slashed and nobody in town would sell them new tires, the tire-slashing was unilaterally condemned, and there was even debate over whether it was ethically acceptable for the townspeople to have refused to sell them tires, or whether — as despicable as the Westboro baptists are — the right thing to do would be to treat them like any other customer.

In these guys world, a guy gets stabbed by one of their allies, and they applaud it.

The day I see these Leviticans (to generalize John Scalzi’s term for anti-gay Christians) picketing a Red Lobster is the day I’ll grant them a little teeny tiny bit of intellectual honesty. After all, the term used for shellfish–“abomination”–is exactly the same term used for (male) homosexuality.

It’s true that since Obama has been in office, the White House has been broadcasting “gay rays” to turn us all gay. But Romney will double teh gay!

I am not religious and would not care if the Bible really did clearly condemn “male homosexuality”, but for accuracy I would like to point out that it manifestly does not.

While shellfish, pork, combinations of meat and milk, and certain types of fabrics are clearly and unequivocally condemned, the “man lying with a man as with a woman” statement is highly ambiguous. As I have pointed out in the past, it could be interpreted as condemning only male bisexuality.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah condemns people who plot a gang rape. It provides no information about whether homosexual males who don’t attempt gang rape should be condemned.

King David, a character favored by the Biblical god, is strongly implied to have homosexual relationships.

A related point is that although language translated in English as “whore” or “harlot” is often used in an insulting way, actual woman sex workers are often depicted in a very positive way in the Bible, from the early Old Testament to the Gospels.

Attempted homosexual rape was not the original sin of the Sodomites. That was a much later interpretation from the Christian era [about 10th or 11th century IIRC] where sodomy was associated with anal sex. The sin was simply a violation of the traditions of hospitality and respect for another person’s visitors. The crowd wanted to simply know who [or what] the strange dudes?? visiting Lot were. The story happens at around the mythological time of the commandment to Abraham to have every male circumcised. The crowd may have only wanted to know if the visitors were circumcised [or were even male], thus violating the privacy and respect for Lot’s visitors. This gets confused with Lot’s offer to have the mob rape his daughters in order to save his visitors from being embarrassed.

Actually that story condemns people who gang-rape male guests. Gang-raping virgin females who are daughters of a member of the community is just fine, as the community had the father’s permission. OK, maybe not entirely fine, because said virgin daughters end up raping their father. And their offspring become fathers of new nations, but those nations are considered lower than average on the biblical pecking order (no acceptance of converts from those nations for 3-4 generations).

If the homosexualization of America means the National Anthem would be performed at baseball games by Cabaret Voltaire, then I’m all for it, 100%. (If it’s the Pet Shop Boys, well… Maybe 80%.)

I sometimes think history would have gone better if the Greek successor states had beat the Maccabee revolt.

Christianity and Isalam would never have arisen. This was the battle where western culture lost.

Sorry, but this is a bogus argument made by liberal Christian apologists. It’s true that female homosexuality is never mentioned (since women are hardly treated as people at all), but Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 are unambiguous: “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination.” “If a man lies with a man as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them.”

It is true that the word for “abomination” WRT homosexuality, to`ebah, is different from the one used for shellfish, sheqets; according to my annotated Bible, the former means morally disgusting or abhorrent, the latter more about filthy, but both with connotations of idolatry.
