Mitt’s Latest Position on Immigration

Mitt Romney, the self-declared man of steadiness and consistency, has stopped the spinning wheel and landed on yet another position on immigration. It was summed up perfectly by this FARK headline: “Mitt Romney was for amnesty for illegals after Reagan was for amnesty for illegals but he’s against amnesty for illegals after Newt is for amnesty for illegals. Got all that? Good.”

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who charged Republican presidential primary rival Newt Gingrich with proposing “amnesty” for certain illegal immigrants, took a nearly identical position in a 2006 Bloomberg interview, saying some foreigners who entered the U.S. illegally should be allowed to remain and gain legal status.

Romney, who at the time hadn’t yet declared his first presidential candidacy for 2008, told reporters and editors in Bloomberg News’s Washington bureau that the 11 million immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally “are not going to be rounded up and box-carred out.” Law-abiding people who pay taxes, learn English and don’t rely on government benefits should be allowed to “get in line” to apply for citizenship, he said.

“We need to begin a process of registering those people, some being returned, and some beginning the process of applying for citizenship and establishing legal status,” Romney said during the March 29, 2006, session.

He must have an aide that does nothing but keep track of which side he’s taking on every issue on any particular day. But that doesn’t make him inconsistent, you see, because he’s gone to the same church and been married to the same woman for more than 40 years. And had the same haircut.

That would probably be just about the easiest job on the campaign. The answer to the question “What is Mitt’s position on X issue?” would always be “Yes.”

Hell’s bells, he has even changes position on his own first name.

Say what you will about Romney, he’s not dumb. That kind of dead weight would have been cut from his staff years ago.
