Dumb Things Pat Buchanan Says

Talking Points Memo has a list of ten absurd claims made by Pat Buchanan in his new book proclaiming the end of “white America” in the next three decades. And there’s some world-class stupid going on here. To wit:

When the faith dies, the culture dies, the civilization dies, the people die. That is the progression. And as the faith that gave birth to the West is dying in the West, peoples of European descent from the steppes of Russia to the coast of California have begun to die out, as the Third World treks north to claim the estate. The last decade provided corroborating if not conclusive proof that we are in the Indian summer of our civilization.

Yes, yes, yes. The Mongol hordes are at the gate and poised to conquer us. We’ve heard this before. In fact, we heard it about Buchanan’s Irish ancestors a century ago. It doesn’t get any less ridiculous when it’s turned on another group.

Obama’s White House thus enlisted in the long and successful campaign to expel Christianity from the public square, diminish its presence in our public life, and reduce its role to that of just another religion.

I sure wish Obama had enlisted had done something like that, but he didn’t. And Christianity is just another religion, equally as invalid as the rest of them.

Those who believe the rise to power of an Obama rainbow coalition of peoples of color means the whites who helped to engineer it will steer it are deluding themselves. The whites may discover what it is like to ride in the back of the bus.

Well sure. Because having white people in control of what is best for black people has always worked out so well for them. Pat is just mad that his personal privilege is being eroded. Tough. Get over it.

Not until the 1960s did courts begin to use the Fourteenth Amendment to impose a concept of equality that the authors of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, The Federalist Papers, and the Gettysburg Address never believed in. Before the 1960s, equality meant every citizen enjoyed the same constitutional rights and the equal protection of existing laws. Nothing in the Constitution or federal law mandated social, racial, or gender equality.

Except that the court used the Fourteenth Amendment precisely to overturn laws that did not guarantee every citizen the same constitutional rights and the equal protection of the laws. That’s what the equal protection clause means.

Our intellectual, cultural, and political elites are today engaged in one of the most audacious and ambitious experiments in history. They are trying to transform a Western Christian republic into an egalitarian democracy made up of all the tribes, races, creeds, and cultures of planet Earth. They have dethroned our God, purged our cradle faith from public life, and repudiated the Judeo-Christian moral code by which previous generations sought to live.

They haven’t dethroned your god, Pat; he never existed in the first place. And the Judeo-Christian moral code has brought enormous suffering and oppression in our society. Good riddance to it.

They are trying to transform a Western Christian republic into an egalitarian democracy made up of all the tribes, races, creeds, and cultures of planet Earth.

I count two fallacies in that statement. The first is that the US was ever a “Christian republic”. The founding fathers certainly didn’t think so (See: Treaty of Tripoli). The second is that idea of an “egalitarian democracy” being something abhorrent. Yes, horror of horrors, let’s all fear the society where everone is treated equally, even if they hold different religious views or have more melanin in their skin than Pat Buchanan.

Actually, Crazy Uncle Pat clearly does believe in Equal Protection Under the Law. It’s just that those words have a different meaning to him. To him, it means that all white Christians are equal to each other and all nonwhite Christians are equal to each other. But white Christians are meant to be in charge.

So this only applies to Asia and the Pacific rim?

(Yeah, I know what he meant.)

Isn’t that what Jesus wanted to do?

Pat Buchanan is an overt Nazi sympathizer from way back (“bulwark against international Communism” and all that), and never learned a thing from the experience of WW-II or the Holocaust. This latest bit of fascist fearmongering is not at all surprising.

I certainly hope so! As a white guy, I’d like to think that it’s the President who is actually in charge, not some cabal of white handlers.

Frankly, if you vote for person (of color) A expecting that (white) person B will control what they do, you deserve to be disappointed.

A predominantly Catholic Third World. Apparently Pat Buchanan doesn’t think Catholics are Real ChristiansTM.

Buchanan, like many other rich, useless, parasitic upper-class right wing white dudes is using christianity as a coded word for “rich, useless, parasitic upper-class right-wing white dudes”. Most of the third world is not composed of rich, useless, parasitic upper-class right-wing white dudes, and when he talks about the “Faith” dying, he means that he is deadly afraid to see actual human beings outbreeding rich, useless, parasitic upper-class right-wing white dudes, which put rich, useless, parasitic upper-class right-wing white dudes in the dangerous position of lacking the firepower to slaughter people who have been mistreated by rich, useless, parasitic upper-class right-wing white dudes for centuries should they decide to exact revenge gainst rich, useless, parasitic upper-class right-wing white dudes by demanding the standards which have been the mostly exclusive privilege of rich, useless, parasitic upper-class right-wing white dudes until now.

At least, one can see that using “christianity” as a code word has the merit of making sentences shorter

Ah, but you see, they’re not WHITE Xians ™ and therefore, not deserving to inherit the glorious civilization that WHITE Xians ™ have produced.

I’m sure my brother is being facetious; as far as I know, he has no particular opinions about the Irish either way.

Buchanan was on the Diane Rehm Show yesterday, peddling this garbage, and he has a highly defective view of history. He kept claiming that immigrants in the past were forced to assimilate, but now we let them keep their identity and that will be the end of our culture. He explicitly states that there can be no stability with diversity.

That would have surprised the Romans, who maintained their state for 1000 years while absorbing Greeks, Jews, Egyptians, and every other ethnicity Europe and Asia Minor have to offer. A Roman man wasn’t considered educated if he didn’t have a strong command of Greek – by comparison, just imagine expecting our presidential candidates to demonstrate their skill with French!

More recently, in 1900 many American cities were a quilt of almost self-sufficient ethnic conclaves, so that you could walk from neighborhood to neighborhood and hear the languages change. No one had to be assimilated; you just waited for the children to grow up who didn’t know any country but the one they lived in. Require them to assimilate? Just try to stop them! It can’t be done.

My own ancestors (and James’s) came over from Switzerland in the late 1840′s, bought up farmland in northeastern Indiana, and joined with other Swiss immigrants in naming their towns “Bern” and “Geneva” and founding a Mennonite church. A hundred years later, our own mother was still speaking German at home.

Yet today, our mother is an avowed white nativist Tea Partier.
    *shakes head sadly*

  15. Nemo says

They are trying to transform a Western Christian republic into an egalitarian democracy made up of all the tribes, races, creeds, and cultures of planet Earth.

    Sounds… good?

Anyway, this is what I like about Pat: He puts it in fairly honest terms (yes we can dispute the “Christian republic”, but that’s not my point here), instead of the overblown and turned-on-its-head rhetoric so favored by much of the right these days, in which liberals are somehow oppressors, simultaneously Nazis and Communists, etc. Pat is an unapologetic authoritarian and will actually tell you so.

  16. eric says

Buchanan was on the Diane Rehm Show yesterday…claiming that immigrants in the past were forced to assimilate, but now we let them keep their identity and that will be the end of our culture.

Right, because we all know that the Irish immigrants like Buchanan’s family neither kept their identity nor added anything to the previously existing American culture [snort].

I have a hard time imagining Buchanan could be dumb enough to believe his own lines. He’s gotta be a con.

  17. jnorris says

Buchanan knows two things, first: Fox News is going to hire at least one of the current Republican Tea Party pres candidates as a commentator. He has to keep his name alive or FN will overlook him. Second: the number of bigots who will buy his books and/or pay attention to him gets smaller every day. He has to make his money while he can.

I pity him, he’s old school bigot and the new Tea Party bigots are all kids compared to him. And the kids ignore him. Rachel Maddow is the only person who will listen to him and she’s paid to do it.

Heh, I found that paragraph inspiring, actually. Guilty as charged!

  20. imthegenieicandoanything says

And “Republicans” tell us with utter “Republican” sincerity that they aren’t racist bigots and believe in the American dream.

Being a “Republican” means being a human turd stupid enough to believe your own lies, just long enough to run away from them.

Stupid, insane, ignorant (on purpose, unlike most nations), and or evil.

PB is an almost perfect mix of the four qualities, but the insanity doesn’t excuse his crimes. Fuck off, Pat.

  21. jakc says

My favorite dumb thing Pat has written was his moving paen to the start of WW II: “When the Germans crossed the Polish frontier…” Why the Germans were just out for a picnic and Hitler didn’t want a war …if those crazy liberals hadn’t called it an invasion and declared war, all that bad stuff in WWII wouldn’t have happened.

  22. Michael Heath says

    Area Man:

The dumbest thing of all is that Pat Buchanan is still a regular guest on cable TV.

Where he consistently out-performs his conservative peers by actually listening and considering contra arguments along with presenting far better though still failing arguments. The fact Mr. Buchanan is a remedial debator while distinguishing himself as one of the best conservatives on TV news shows illustrates how utterly incompetent American conservatism has become.

  23. Johnny Vector says

Heh. I have Nathan Fillion (and Joss Whedon, I suppose) to thank for the fact that now whenever I hear Pat Buchanan’s name, I can only think of the word “Buchananity”. Only in his case it doesn’t much set him apart from reptiles and lawn furniture.

  24. says

“They are trying to transform a Western Christian republic into an egalitarian democracy made up of all the tribes, races, creeds, and cultures of planet Earth.”

That’s right, Pat. It’s call the United States.

  25. cptdoom says

I can’t figure out if I should be more horrified by Buchanan’s sentiments or utterly amazed by the inadvertent hilarity of seeing an avowed bigot just cover himself in bullsh*t.

My favorite quote from the TPM link above:

If [conservative political commentator Heather] Mac Donald’s statistics are accurate, 49 of every 50 muggings and murders in New York are the work of minorities. That might explain why black folks have trouble getting a cab. Every New York cabby must know the odds, should he pick up a man of color at night.

By that kind of “logic,” none of us should invest our money with any of the men on Wall Street.

    And this:

. They are trying to transform a Western Christian republic into an egalitarian democracy made up of all the tribes, races, creeds, and cultures of planet Earth.

I sort of thought that was the whole point of the American Experiment – or did Sister Cathleen steer me wrong?

I agree with Nemo, James and the Rev. This is a bad thing?

  27. Pinky says

Building on what jamessweet said; with only a few word changes the paragraph becomes:

Our intellectual, cultural, and political elites [leaders] are today engaged in one of the most audacious and ambitious experiments in history. They are trying to transform a Western Christian republic into an egalitarian democracy made up of all the tribes, races, creeds, and cultures of planet Earth. They have dethroned our God, purged our cradle faith [superstition] from public life, and repudiated [have allowed other pathways along with] the Judeo-Christian moral code by which previous generations sought [struggled] to live.

It could be used in a declaration or manifesto.

Thank you Pat, you have come through for the other side once again.

  28. says

The only thing Hanley (jokingly) said about Pat’s ethnic/religious/national group is that he doesn’t consider them “white”. That amounts to vilification in your mind?

I’ll just add here that yes, Hanley was both joking, and reminding us that Catholics like Buchanan and his ancestors were once victims of the same sort of ethnic bigotry that Buchanan now tries to incite against others.

  29. Snoof says

Do you really have time–or the servers–to list them all?

When the faith dies, the culture dies, the civilization dies, the people die. That is the progression.

I’m guessing that he’s talking about the death of the Roman pagan faith that died, and then the Christards took over, the Roman civilization died, and it stunted progress for over 1000 years. Including throwing back knowledge and science so far that millions would die of diseases caused by filth. Not to mention all those holy wars, Inquisitions, and crusades.

Ancient Rome is the one you meant–right, Pat?

It’s just that those words have a different meaning to him. To him, it means that all white Christian males are equal to each other and all nonwhite Christians and females are equal to each other. But white Christian males are meant to be in charge.
