Obama Bans Guns. By Not Banning Guns.

You can’t fool Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association, he’ll see right through you. And he’s figured out President Obama’s devious plan to take away our guns by not taking away our guns.

“[The Obama campaign] will say gun owners — they’ll say they left them alone,” LaPierre told an audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Friday. “In public, he’ll remind us that he’s put off calls from his party to renew the Clinton [assault weapons] ban, he hasn’t pushed for new gun control laws… The president will offer the Second Amendment lip service and hit the campaign trail saying he’s actually been good for the Second Amendment.”

“But it’s a big fat stinking lie!” the NRA leader exclaimed. “It’s all part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and destroy the Second Amendment in our country.”

And Obama would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for those pesky kids.

As Obama has said numerous time to Gun Control groups, “We’re working on Gun Control under the radar”. And scandals like Fast & Furious, where the Obama DOJ not only demanded that gun dealers allow known straw purchases for drug gangs to happen, but had ATF agents buy guns directly & hand them to known weapons dealers for the drug cartels, in order to let the weapons walk into Mexico, while not letting the Mexican government know what was going on.

Had this not blown up in their face, it would have provided a lot of political fodder to push for more gun control.

Sensible gun owners really need sane people to speak to their interests. I know I’d be embarrassed by the NRA.

Yeah, usually we pretend the NRA are part of the tobacco lobby or NASCAR or something. I suppose in a sense they help keep the overton window open, but propping up one end of the spectrum with foam-flecked crazy doesn’t really help centrists.

Would Mr. gillis care to provide a source for this information. The fascist news channel and onenewsnow don’t count.

    I avoid these people .

    shanegillis, you are a liar.

Obama has said no such thing. Only in your fevered hatred of the man will you find such words.

    Prove me wrong, munchkin.

Yes, giving away guns to weapons dealers and drug cartels is absolute proof that they’re going to ban guns.

By the way, what color is the sky in your universe?

On a related note, I am very concerned about Obama’s plan to start a nuclear war with Russia. The recent disarmament treaty is all the proof we need of his deviousness.

As a gun owner, I am embarrassed by the NRA. I think it ought to be possible to protect our 2nd Amendment rights without implying to the public that gun owners are paranoid, unstable people with a tenuous grasp on reality.

On the other hand, I think given the weight of recent court decisions it’s high time that the ACLU reversed its position and started recognizing the 2nd Amendment protects and individual right to bear arms.

I think the NRA is to reasonable gun owners something like what PETA is to animal lovers. The name sounds good. Who wouldn’t be in favor of treating animals ethically? Heck, you might even donate some money to them based on their pamphlets and outreach efforts. But when you look past their public face and into exactly how they spend the money, you start to realize they’re f*cking nuts.

As for Fast & Furious, this administration has been harping a lot on how guns keeping finding their way from US gun shops to drug cartels in Mexico, and saying that there needs to be more gun laws to prevent this, despite the fact that a wide range of analysts have shown, repeatedly, that this is not the case.

So, what does the administration do? The DOJ instructs the ATF to make sure guns from US gun shops find their way to Mexico so they can be traced back to US gun shops, and the ATF does this by telling gun shops to let known straw buyers for the cartels buy guns.

Please don’t tell me that you think HotAir is a valid source.

Any way, I support gun control. Good job, Obama! This was in the wake of an incident that you may recall resulted in the death of 6 people including a federal judge, and the wounding of 14 including a sitting Congress member being shot in the head.

It’s worth pointing out that the “under the radar” quote is something that Sarah Brady said, not Obama himself on the record.

It’s basically hearsay from someone on the opposite end of the gun control spectrum, so until we start seeing actual legislation (and the Small Arms Treaty paranoia is bullshit too) I’m not going to waste any effort getting irritated about anything.

Quite frankly, living in California, I’m more concerned about stupid state legislation than stupid federal legislation.

  13. DaveL says

I might note that “of course we’re (secretly, undetectably) pushing your agenda” has got to be the 2nd most popular lie told by politicians to lobbyists, right after “Of course I’ll leave my wife for you.”

  14. says

Most of the 2nd Amendment supporters I know were not happy about Obama, they were leary of him, but they accepted his inaction with regard to guns as the way it’s gonna be. Even the whole “under the radar quote” just made sure people were watching him.

It wasn’t until this ATF boondoggle broke that people got upset. Either Mr. Obama approved the plan for the ATF to walk guns into Mexico, or he is utterly clueless as to what his administration is doing in his name.

Me, personally, I’m much more inclined (given his track record so far) to believe the latter and accept that DaveL is right, his statement to Sarah Brady was just Obama in campaign mode, and not an allusion to what the DOJ was up to.

  15. kyoseki says

Well, considering his level of involvement with the DEA when it comes to medical marijuana raids, it wouldn’t surprise me if the DOJ is operating by itself as well.

  16. says

    “See also this WaPo article.”

But here’s the problem. Before you get to the line in which Sarah Brady says that Obama says that he’s working “under the radar” buried way down below, you have to first read through paragraphs like this:

The silence of Steve Croley, the White House’s point man on gun regulation policy, echoes the decision by Democrats to remain mute on guns as a national issue, even in the wake of the Tucson rampage. Croley’s keep-your-head-down approach is in keeping with President Obama’s preference for low-key wonks, but in this case, his reticence has more to do with political reality: Democrats have no plans for serious gun-control initiatives, and the Gabrielle Giffords tragedy, as heart-rending as it was, hasn’t changed their minds.

Even if Obama were working “under the radar” for gun control, and I see no reason to think he is other than perhaps to toss a bone or two to gun control advocates, the entire reason is that it’s a political loser and there’s virtually no support from within the party. Rather than get worked up with paranoia and convoluted conspiracy theories, the reality of this should simply be taken at face value. But I guess that requires a bit more rationality than you typically get from gun nuts.

Area Man @20, there’s a cap being doffed in your direction. Wait, really, with all the words that my spellchecker doesn’t know, doffed is A-OK? Weird. Anyway, good comment. I’m a gun owner myself, but my dad ended his and my (junior) membership in the NRA some 18 years ago. When I asked, he simply told me, “They got kinda nuts.” It’s been true ever since, and thankfully there’s at least a decent amount of gun owners in this country who think the same way. Wish I’d listened to my instincts and bought stock in ammunition companies before he got elected. Don’t you wish that was some sort of dark joke rather than reality? That there was a giant run on ammunition in this country after the election of a President who’s only half-white? America, fuck yeah!

Dude, the drug cartels in Mexico want full auto M-16s, with grenade launchers. They want belt fed MGs and full auto subguns.

They do not want 3-round limited shotguns, 9mm pistols, and bolt action hunting rifles, which is 80% of what you see at gun shops. The other 20% are revolvers and single action assault rifle knock-offs.

My dad has an FFL and I have visited more gun shops than I care to count. One and only one gun shop that I have visited IN TEXAS has a full auto weapon and it is not for sale.

If Mexican drug cartels want bolt action .22 rifles, then they can have them.

Those sneaky ATF bastards…doing it in a way that leads straight back to the ATF.

“Either Mr. Obama approved the plan for the ATF to walk guns into Mexico, or he is utterly clueless as to what his administration is doing in his name.”
Third option; the most powerful man in the world doesn’t micromanage, and isn’t aware of, every single one of the thousands of operations under him. Some? sure. All? No way.
This, not surprisingly, occasionally getting blindsided by incompetence.

Another embarrassed liberal gun owner here who shuns the NRA. The level of paranoia among the more conservative members of my hobby is getting damn nears unbearable. It’s getting so bad that I don’t even goto a local range to practice lest I want to be cornered by a Tea Bagger ranting about Obama’s creeping Communism and his alleged plans to impose Sharia law in the U.S. after he bans guns and Christianity.

I hate to see how they’d react if they found out I was an atheist with “socialist” sympathies.
