Why Palin Hasn’t Announced Her Non-Run

It’s summed up perfectly in this fundraising letter from Sarah PAC, which promises that she’s still thinking about running and will continue to do so if you’ll just send her money now.

As you may know, Gov. Palin is on the verge of making her decision of whether or not to run for office.

It’s one of the most difficult and important decisions of her life. And I want her to know that she has our support…

Someone must save our nation from this road to European Socialism. Do you think it should be Gov. Palin?

If so, can you send your best, one-time gift to SarahPAC today to help her elect more common-sense conservatives – and show her that we support her if she decides to run?

Not a bad scam.

I hope we someday get to the point where politicians will try to bury any Palin associations they had in a memory hole, only to have it pointed out to their embarrassment, leading to long apologies for their stupidity.

Unfortunately, I’m relatively pessimistic, right now.

Where do we donate if we think a little Euro-socialism would be *good* for the USA? Even a little Canuck-socialism (*cough*universalhealthcare*cough*)would be an improvement.

I have this travel brochure idea of Europe, old cities, good food and people who have a chance to enjoy life. When I hear European socialism I can’t help think that it might be better than the rat race.

  4. riayn says

Oh, European socialism. You mean where we provide universal healthcare and actually give a shit about keeping people above the poverty line? You are right, that is something America really shouldn’t adopt. If they did, life there might actually get better.

Time is running out. She either gets in the race soon, or the Great Eye will cast its gaze elsewhere. Once we get into the caucuses and primaries, attention will go to the real candidates.

I’m guessing she won’t run, and I’m wondering what her excuse will be. Something about having more effect on policy outside of office? Having more important work to do?

SarahPAC is the political equivalent of Balloon Boy’s dad, trying to convince us that someone is inside the craft. Look! It’s flying!
Meanwhile, Sarah is safe inside a closet somewhere.

You know, if Palin ends up getting busted for scamming her donors with false promises, it’ll be both funny and sad to see a chunk of the victims defending her.

Do candidates still have to register for the primaries if they intend to run as independents in the general election?

    Creeping European socialism?

I thought we were supposed to be afeared about creeping Sharia law?

Being a good little teabagger these days must be a total nightmare, trying to remember what you’re supposed to be afraid of.

Virtually all Western European countries have longer life expectancy, lower infant mortality rate, better educational scores, less poverty, more economic security, far lower crime rate, far lower incarceration rate, greater mean leisure time, etc.

That’s even true for the ones that are having a moderate recession. Of course, no-one ever bothers to talk about the Western European countries that have persistently lower unemployment than the US.

Likewise, we cannot ever, ever admit that European nations are intensely capitalist, just with better regulated and more sustainable capitalism, and that in many ways, our markets are less free – we have far more regulatory capture and have a pluto-klepto-aristocracy driving government legislation. But if we said that, it might hurt the feelings of people like David Brooks, and I guess that would be a bad thing or something. Imagine if we did something like compare Dutch commercial holdings in the US to US commercial holdings in the Netherlands, and then compared the populations.

The absolute, comical, bitter irony is that Alaska has a universal mimimum income program, and receives enormous amounts of net money from the federal government.

In fact, Alaska is the only RICH state I can think of that gets net money from the federal government. Sure, all the other “open for business” race-to-the-bottom red states get net funding, too, but that’s because they’re all poor, high crime states. Alaska is arguably the most socialist place that has ever existed. And that is extremely beneficial for Alaskans. Although less so for those of us who pay the taxes and listen to them whine about how evil we are.

I’m still trying to parse out what the rather oxymoronic phrase “common-sense conservatives” means.

    Zombie, perhaps?

Newt Gingrich has been running this scam for years. I am surprised no else tries it. Just have to write a book once in a while and pretend to run for office every so often.

  12. Aliasalpha says

So is this bad because she’s apparently scamming people or good because she won’t run for office?

The horror of European Socialism. I bet the Swiss, the Swedes, the Danes, the Fins, the Austrians and the Germans are really struggling with the shorter working hours, longer holidays, access to better health care, better protection in the work place, lower infant mortality rates, lower crime rates……

Stupid question: if people send Palin money and she decides not to run, can she just do whatever she wants with the money? I’ve looked up PACs, and according to the Wikipedia page PAC money can be spent “independently of a candidate campaign” (I may be misinterpreting the phrase “PACs are not limited in their ability to spend money independently of a candidate campaign”), but a person can really set up a PAC and get people to donate to a campaign that may not happen? Please do correct me if I’m wrong.

If I’m right, however, it looks like I’ve found a way to pay my tuition if I decide to attend university in the US.

“PACs are not limited in their ability to spend money independently of a candidate campaign”

Is that not how she paid for her ‘family vacation’?

  16. dcsohl says

Can we please stop calling the Europeans socialist? Socialism is ownership by the government of the means of production. The only socialist thing they have (that we don’t, that is) is healthcare, and that’s not even true for all of the EU countries.

What they do have are laws and regulations demanding that corporations treat their employees like human beings and not cogs in a machine. That’s not socialist. That’s just … kinda nice, really.

“The horror of European Socialism. I bet the Swiss, the Swedes, the Danes, the Fins…”

I’m gonna guess you meant “the Finns”. The “Fins” are, at this moment, mostly disaffected Miami NFL players and fans.
