Robert O’Brien Nominee: Roberta Combs

Who’s Roberta Combs? She’s the president of the Christian Coalition these days and she sends me crazy statements every week. Like this one:

It is hard to believe, but we increasingly have two separate Americas. Many liberals have their “government knows best” and “America is bad” positions and the rest of Americans believe in America’s exceptionalism.

Yes, liberals always believe that the government knows best. Conservatives, on the other hand, think the government can’t do anything right, ever. Except they never seem to doubt the government when they torture someone. The government couldn’t possibly have the wrong guy, could they? Except, of course, they often have tortured innocent people over the last 10 years in the name of stopping terrorism, by their own admission. But somehow those anti-government conservatives simply can’t imagine that the government could ever screw that up.

They never seem to doubt that the government convicts only the guilty and never sends an innocent person to prison or puts an innocent person to death. Rick Perry doesn’t lose a wink of sleep over the possibility that Texas may have put innocent men to death — despite the fact that there have been more than 40 DNA exonerations in his state alone in the last 15 years. Somehow those anti-government conservatives think the government is unquestionable when it comes to the justice system.

And they love the government when it comes time to find a way to punish gay people. Or to prevent people from reading or watching something they disapprove of. And when they want to punish women for having abortions or doctors for providing that service. And when the government is going to war on some trumped-up premise. Then they suddenly love the government.

Unless the government rules against one of them. Then it’s the fault of “activist” judges.

They don’t get nuance and they throw tantrums if they don’t get their way. They’re mental and emotional two years olds.

Interesting use of “exceptionalism.” Once upon a time it meant that we’d done something remarkable, now it seems to mean that the laws of Nature are suspended for the USA.

So this robert o’brien chap was a bit of a childish hypocrite then?

Robert O’Brien was a weapons grade moron who used to come around my blog in the old days when I was giving out an “idiot of the month” award. When I gave that award to Gerald Allen, an Alabama state senator who submitted a bill to ban all books by or about gay people from the entire state, he actually showed up to defend the guy and made a spectacular fool of himself in the process. So I renamed the award in his honor.

and the rest of Americans believe in America’s exceptionalism.

    Which is false.

    1. Fundies apparently believe the US is now god’s chosen country and people, the new Israel. Of course, there is no evidence for this at all. North America and the USA aren’t mentioned in the bible at all. This is just some gibberish they made up.

    2. From a reality viewpoint, the US was/is exceptional. Last superpower, world’s largest economy, world’s largest military, world’s largest R&D establishment and so on. It has nothing to do with Imaginary Sky Monsters and a lot to do with a working economy, educational system, and political system.

The fundies are about to fix that. There is no doubt we are fading out. Bush did a lot of that. The next president, who is looking likely to be a fundie moron, will probably finish us off.

This is a self fulfilling anti-prophecy. The US is on a trajectory to be another formerly great civilization. Nothing exceptional about that. I suppose using fundie nonlogic, that will mean that the gods have decided that they hate the US.

Many liberals have their “government knows best” and “America is bad” positions

Because, of course, the government has never been involved in any of the bad stuff America has done.

I never cease to be amazed at the contradictory positions that right-wingers attribute to liberals (e.g., that they’re pro-Shariah atheists). Is it just that they’re so used to tolerating their own conflicting beliefs (e.g., government is the enemy, but it’s always right when arresting/killing/torturing/eavesdropping) that they don’t notice?

The only thing I see as exceptional about America right now is its ability to tolerate, idolize and elevate morons while despising education and excellence. The alternate reality crowd used to be small and easily ignored. Now, not so much as they are running for high political office.

The USA is number one in a lot of things. We have the largest and weirdest lunatic fringes on the planet. They even have their own political party, the Tea Party/GOP.

The alternate reality crowd used to be small and easily ignored. Now, not so much as they are running for high political office.

They have a really good chance of winning the next presidency. This is the headline this morning.

A lost decade for the middle class Americans’ tumbling incomes over the past 10 years pose a big challenge for the economy. Down to 1996 levels.

This was Bush’s fault. But it’s going to be very difficult for Obama to win in 2012. Historically, when the economy is sick, the party in power loses. The economy is sick and not getting better. It may even get worse. Even the polls are showing Obama in big trouble now.

The Fed. Reserve projects the recovery by 2018. IMO, one more Tea Party moron president, and the US is over with. You can add another decade to that, recovery in 2028.

There are two kinds of people in this world.

Those that make stupid generalizations dividing the world into categories, and everyone else.

    Raven,

One of Obama’s greatest shots at victory is the Republicans picking the biggest lunatic from their ample stock. Bush won in 2000 under rather unusual circumstances. First, he posed as a moderate, a “compassionate conservative.” Second, the election itself was unusual. Something like 3 million voters who might otherwise have voted for Gore didn’t do so because, ironically enough, his environmental policy was too weak. Third, despite all of this, Gore actually won the popular vote and only that fiasco in Florida got him into office.

While normal circumstances lead to the expectation that the administration will lose during an economic downturn, if the Republicans don’t appeal to the middle they are unlikely to benefit from this historic trend.

These conservatives who hate government – I assume they write their opinions after having driven to their offices on government built roads, they are employed by companies that can operate because of the security and certainty that a government provides, and they can express their opinions in the certainty that it will be the government that will protect and uphold their right to freedom of speech.
If no-government is such a good thing, why dont they piss off to Sudan. The Sudanese are having a lovely time without a functioning government, living a life of tax-free euphoria.

Maybe. It certainly is just a best case guess right now and a lot can happen before end 2012.

But it is an extremely poor strategy and hope for your opponents to shoot both their feet off. If that is all the Dems. have, Cthulhu help them.

Perry has the ability to do what Bush did. An extremist idiot who can appear normal for whole weeks at a time. His track record in Texas is dismal with poverty and child poverty increasing from allready high levels. And he is running on those “accomplishments”.
