The latest bit of right wing idiocy is a full scale freakout over Michelle Obama insulting the flag. Watch this Youtube video and tell me what you see:
If you’re a wingnut, you probably think she said “All this for a damn flag.” Media Matters has links to all the right wing bloggers and “journalists” who are claiming that. Unreconstructed lunatic Debbie Schlussel is my favorite. She says she can’t be sure that’s what Obama said, but that’s okay because she must have been thinking it anyway:
I can’t really tell for sure, but a number of people are abuzz about this video of Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Hussein Obama Idi Amin Dada. The consensus seems to be that the First Ms. Thang is saying to hubby Barack, “All of this for a damn flag.” (She said this about the American flag–you know the one brave men died for.) Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what she said because we know she hates America and previously said she wasn’t proud of our country until Obama had a chance to become Prez. Looks like that’s what she said, but I can’t tell for sure. I would need a deaf person or other expert lip reader to confirm. Watch and see if you agree (like I said, even if she didn’t say exactly that, we know she’s thinkin’ it). . .
If you’re deaf and an accomplished lip reader, on the other hand, she said pretty much the exact opposite.

I can’t tell everything she says but it’s obvious she says something that ends with “fold that flag”. Going to the lipreaders site confirms that.

I’m still annoyed with flag idolators trying to destroy America’s values like freedom of expression (by way of stepping on a flag as an example for a class), so I have a hard time caring what Michelle said.

I can’t see the first bit of her sentence, but it clearly ends with “fold the flag”. You don’t even need a lip-reading expert for that much. “…damn flag” just doesn’t look at all like what she said.

Actually stuff like this can happen on both sides. I remember a full thermonuclear freakout a few years ago over at Americablog when John posted a video that purported to show W flipping off a bunch of reporters. If you looked closely, you could see he was actually giving them a thumbs-up, but most of the commenters over there were having none of it. Anyone arguing against the consensus was accused of having a right-wing agenda.
I wouldn’t even think of denying, though, that it seems to happen a lot more on the right than on the left.
