This one is a real doozy. Wingnut Linda Harvey of Mission America says gay people don’t even exist:
Harvey: There’s one big fact that’s not backed up. There is no proof that there’s ever anything like a gay, lesbian or bisexual or transgendered child, or teen or human. One of the other things you’re gonna see as I mentioned is a big campaign GLSEN’s gonna roll out this year calling for ‘respect,’ respect! Not just for people, but for homosexual lifestyle. The PR campaign to hold up gay as a good thing: the lifestyle, not the person, because there are no such humans.
Great. If they don’t exist, maybe you should stop trying to oppress them.

I believe that Harvey is asserting some form of “it is just a choice” claim here, essentially asserting that people are choosing to be gay. Harvey is just even dumber than most people making this sort of assertion.

Is it OK for me to discriminate against her for her choice to remain ignorant and bigoted? Or does she consider ignorance and bigotry to be a RELIGIOUS choice and therefore somehow exempt?

Well, she is sort of half-right, but not for the reasons she thinks. If you categorise people by their sexuality, homosexuals exist. If you ignore sexuality in terms of categorising people, then homosexuals dont really exist. The history of oppression of homosexuals is based on the idea that you can categorise a group of people as homosexuals, and then enact laws that discriminate. As laws these laws are repealed, the distinction becomes less important. One day, hopefully, the gender of the person you are attracted to will be of no social or legal importance at all. At that point, the notion that someone is defined by their sexuality will be redundant, and effectively the ‘category’ of homosexual will be too. Why would anyone need to know or even care?

Out of interest, yes, but why would anyone in an official capacity need to know the information? At the moment, in most countries, homosexuals cant marry. Therefore, there is a de-facto interest by the state in your sexuality. When there is marriage equality, the state has no need to know your sexuality because it doesn’t matter. You can marry an adult of either sex. There is no circumstance where the state needs to know a persons sexuality (and therefore have created a category or definition of sexuality) unless it is seeking to treat a person differently because of it.
