A disturbing report:
Cairo police arrested a man who allegedly ‘insulted Islam’ in postings on Facebook after they tracked him down through his internet address, state news agency MENA reported on Saturday.
The agency said the 23-year-old, identified only as Ayman Y.M., posted comments ‘that were insulting to the Koran and the Prophet Mohammed and Islam and Muslims.’ It did not disclose what he allegedly said.
It shouldn’t matter what he said. These people have to get over the idea that their religious views are so special that no one can dare criticize them.

But Ed … dinja know all our rights and freedoms come directly from the Bible?
(Checks Bible for verses relating to freedom of speech. Hmmmmm). OK, how about freedom of assembly? Oh, come on, I just know freedom of religion has got to be in the Bible!
Never mind, I know they’re in there somewhere.

The thing that bugs me just as much is that you’ve got critics of Egypt who want the same sort of laws enacted in protection of the Bible.

And before people say that this just shows how Islamicist Egypt is, I should point out that you even covered a case before where an Egyptian was prosecuted for insulting Christianity. They take seriously the idea that religion shouldn’t be insulted. Let’s hope we don’t head down that path with “hate speech” legislation.

An in-story ad in this blog post thread has Rand Paul soliciting my signature:
What a hoot, so much projection with so little text coupled to a wingnut bonus feature – all caps!

Among the current crop of Republicans seeking a presidential nomination there are at least a couple that might try to get anti-blasphemy legislation passed. Fortunately you do have the First Amendment, so it is unlikely to happen.

The First Amendment is a powerful idea, but it doesn’t enforce itself. Eternal vigilance! Don’t let the bastards gain office and they won’t have an opportunity to subvert our freedoms.
But you knew that …

Evidence for this? This sounds like the left-wing equivalent of “Obama’s going to impose Sharia Law on America!!!!!!!!!!!!
