CPAC Boots Out GOProud and the Birchers

After much controversy at last year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, the American Conservative Union’s board of directors decided to hold a vote on who can and cannot be an official sponsor of the conference — and gay conservative GOProud and the John Birch Society were summarily ousted.

According to official letters obtained by The Daily Caller, the gay conservative group GOProud and the ultraconservative John Birch Society won’t be co-sponsoring the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in 2012.

The decision was reached by a full vote of the American Conservative Union’s board of directors. The ACU organizes and hosts CPAC each year.

Representatives of GOProud and the John Birch Society were notified of the decision via mail Friday afternoon.

But they decided to let David Horowitz continue to be a sponsor, despite having accused prominent conservative activist Grover Norquist of being a radical Muslim infiltrator. Because that’s not too crazy or anything. Here’s my favorite part:

Campbell stressed that although GOProud and the John Birch Society would no longer have a formal sponsorship role at the gathering, “individual members of these organizations are welcome and encouraged to attend CPAC.”

Sounds like a guy trying to hide a mistress or something — okay, you can come, but you have to enter separately and don’t talk to me or you’ll give it all away.

    Mr. Brayton, I’m sure meant to say Birchers in the headline, not birthers (although, to be sure, there are many birthers in the John Birch Society).

    So, in the CPAC’s eyes, GOProud is in the same category as the John Birch Society. That reveals a lot about them. In their eyes, treating gays like equals is as controversial as saying that fluoridated water is a communist plot to corrupt our precious bodily fluids.

    Once again I’m in awe of the mental backflips required by the GOProud members to even exist within the current GOP aka the TeaParty. That requires some seriously difficult compartmentalization to belong to an organization that wants you in jail or dead because of your inborn nature. That’s gotta hurt at least a little.

    I am always respectful of those who will put principle and values before their own narrow self-interests.

    Clearly gay Republicans value bombing Muslims and gutting health and safety regulations even over their own civil rights! Can’t get any more patriotic than that!

    @Chiroptera,
    I guess I never met any GOProud members. My experience with LGBT folk has been universally one of tolerance and general progressive idealism. They want to be treated fairly so treating others fairly is a common theme. Pride parades are some of the best and joyous occasions I have shared with thousands of people I’d never met!

    The self-tortured, self-denying, self-hating nature of the GOProud types is akin, in my mind, to free blacks turning in runaway slaves for the reward during slavery times. I suspect it happened but not too damned often. The self-loathing must consume them from the inside.

    Actually, I’d say they were more like the handful of Louisiana black slave-owning families, some of whose scions even served as comissioned officers in the Confederate Navy.

    Actually, I think CPAC has completely merged with the Birchers, and they just want to ditch the old, somewhat toxic brand name. Kind of like how Philip Morris changed its name to Altria.

    @Abby Normal,
    The teabaggers did manage to fit a lot of different kinds of bigots, racists and haters in the little tent they got cheap on craigslist.

    This sounds like nothing more than window dressing. I note the implied equivalence of a Gay group with a bunch of wingnuts.

    Apparently Cleta Mitchell, a power broker within the ACU, is still angry about her marriage to a closeted gay guy.

    I’m a little confused here. Is there some relationship between GOProud and the Log Cabin Rethuglicans?

  12. jackpantalones says

    slc1:
    GOProud was formed because some gay Republicans felt that the Log Cabin organization had become “centrist” or even “progressive,” i.e. it was not servile enough and dared to occasionally raise a small squeak of protest against the GOP or in favor of gay rights.

    I think GOProud has really helped the LCRs to improve their image. While GOProud showed everyone that they are useless and childish idiots, the LCRs fought DADT court cases.
