My People…

My people are “married”. My people are “white”.
My people are “straight”… and they’re mostly polite.
They don’t like to kick up too much of a fuss
Cos problems aren’t major… for people like us.

My people can tell you, it’s always like this,
As long as you’re abled, and healthy, and cis,
As long as your kids take the normal-sized bus,
Then problems aren’t major… for people like us.

My people are godless (well, some of us are—
Though some of us think that’s a little bizarre)
But we can’t see a need for an “atheist plus”
Cos problems aren’t major… for people like us.

My people have power. We’re well in control.
We speak for the masses—you know, as a whole—
And mostly, there’s nothing we need to discuss
Cos problems aren’t major… for people like us.

My people are thoughtful (just ask us! We’ll say!
It’s never our fault that the world is this way!
It’s nature, of course! It has always been thus!)
The problems aren’t ours—we’re just people like us!

Context? … context everywhere. Yes, I am part of nearly every privileged group you can think of outside of “atheist” (which is easily hidden, if need be, though I don’t). So, yeah, there are no problems anywhere. Trust me. If I can’t see them (or, you know, my people can’t see them)…

*sigh*

I am reminded of the invisibility device in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It was called the “Somebody Else’s Problem Field Generator.” Once you were somebody else’s problem, they couldn’t see you.
