Happy Birthday Tom!!!

Tom Petty turns 59 today!

My favorite song of all time as performed three years ago by my favorite band of all time:

Interesting tidbit about the centrality of this song in his canon, while he has a number of major hits that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will nearly always play because people come to the shows primarily to hear them, this is the one song that he feels he has to always play or people will be disappointed not to have heard it.

I love me some Petty — in fact I am a big fan of an obscure song off Southern Accents – “Spike” — it’s one of my all time favs… I discovered it off a live bootleg I picked up in Italy in 1994…. Happy Birthday Mr. Petty.

Yep, Spike’s a classic. The live versions are really rambly and improvised but not in a way that I think actually adds to the song overall. Part of the problem with the live versions is he literalizes the story a bit too much. Like in the recording, you take “Spike” to be a derisive nickname created by the punk guy’s redneck antagonists. It kind of messes up the song when in the live version Tom says the guy’s name really was Spike. But there are some good moments to those recordings. I can send them to you if you’d like.
