To help the nation

Mike Huckabee wants to set us all straight about where laws come from. They don’t come from Hoboken. They don’t come from Walmart. They don’t come from Microsoft nor yet from Apple. They come from god, gee oh dee god.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) said during an appearance Thursday on a Christian television show that he’s thinking about running for President to help the nation know where laws come from: God.

“We cannot survive as a republic if we do not become, once again, a God-centered nation that understands that our laws do not come from man, they come from God,” he said on the show “Life Today.”

Izzat right?

Then what went so wrong during that time when the laws of the US permitted slavery and forbade interference with slavery? Was god on a 200 year visit to another solar system, or what?

When Huckabee added that he wasn’t demanding a theocracy, host James Robison said, “We have a theocracy right now. It’s a secular theocracy.”

“That’s it!” Huckabee said, describing the current political order as “humanistic, secular, atheistic, even antagonistic toward Christian faith.”

“Secular theocracy” is an obvious oxymoron, but more to the point, I’d like to know how Huckabee thinks he can reconcile his claim about where laws come from with his claim about not demanding a theocracy.

Can we get the god of speed limits to pass that bill raising ours to 75 mph soon then, (here in the PNW)? Do we have sacrifice a BMW on the altar…maybe a Maserati?

What about carpool lanes, Can Huckabee point me to the correct chapter and verse in the bible to tell me gawd’s thoughts on carpool lanes? (I always refer to them as holier-than-thou lanes anyway.)

Hm. Well, if that’s the case, then Christians have got them some ‘splainin’ to do. Surely it must have been God’s wish that abortions were made legal post-Roe vs. Wade, then, right? If God gives all the rights, how could any Christian object to any of them? And how can any good Christian be against our President?

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” (Romans 13:1)

“Remind your people to obey the government and its officers, and always to be obedient and ready for any honest work.” (Titus 3:1)

“Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right.” (1 Peter 1:13-14)

Nonsense, Blanche Quizno! It’s only laws Mike Huckabee likes that come from god. The other laws (freedom of religion, abortion, marriage equality, public schools and so on) are not REAL laws. Not LEGITIMATE laws. Therefore they don’t come from god. And since they don’t come from god they are not legitimate!

Who can argue with such logic?

For that matter, who can put “logic” and “Mike Huckabee” in the same sentence without laughing?

Huckabee’s a wuss — I bet he won’t challenge any laws that the US populace doesn’t generally agree on that are clearly in conflict with the Bible. I bet he won’t ask for Federal blue laws, he won’t criminalize blasphemy, he won’t try to push through a law stating that stoning isn’t “cruel and unusual”.

Then what went so wrong during that time when the laws of the US permitted slavery and forbade interference with slavery?

What makes you think god has a problem with slavery?

  5. samgardner says

Wow, I miswrote that first sentence — I mean he won’t challenge laws that ARE agreed upon by the general US populace.

I guess that the “god” of Babylon was actually the god of Moses in disguise, because he gave Hamurrabi the idea of “laws” a long time before he gave them to Moses. In fact, as Christopher Hitchens once pointed out, if Moses was a “prince in Egypt” he would have had to be familiar with the existing body of Egyptian law. One imagines that when yahweh gave Moses the tablets Moses said, “WTF? Really? ‘shall not kill’? Holy fuck (excuse me) you mean David should have kissed Goliath? No, wait… WTF!”

…Huckabee added that he wasn’t demanding a theocracy….. Except when he, you know, is demanding just that.

Mike Huckabee at a 2008 campaign stop:

“[Some of my opponents] do not want to change the Constitution, but I believe it’s a lot easier to change the constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that’s what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards….”

If Mike can point out where DUI laws, anti-jay-walking laws, possession of stolen property laws, renters’ rights laws, and hundreds more can be found in the bible, I’ll be very, very impressed. And if he lays one finger on the Constitution, he needs to be slapped with a wet mackerel.

    Ahhh … natural law again.

I suppose one might, assuming you are willing to grant the possible existence of supernatural beings granting ideas to mere mortals, credibly claim that a law might be written by God. The same cannot be said about enforcement. Despite how trivial enforcement would be for an all-powerful and all-knowing being I have yet to hear a credible account of God intervening to enforce rules. Certainly there has been the odd lightning bolt that might strike a person deserving punishment but on average those struck seem no more corrupt than average and outside the rare case of coincidence of evil and a lack of luck most seem completely unremarkable. It seems more random than judgmental. Particularly when many of the worse people are seemly overlooked by divine judgment. The fact being that, on average, the evil and corrupt seem to make out quite well on this earth.
