He is disgusted

Facebook can be so random. Usually you see posts from people whose posts you’ve commented on or liked or yadda yadda but then once in awhile there’s a spanner in the works, someone you didn’t even know you were friends with, or someone you’ve forgotten you were friends with and haven’t had any interactions with in generations.

Thus with a pop and a whiff of sulfur I found an update by Lee Moore at the top of the stack just now. And what a ridiculous update it is.

leemoore

I have read too many articles as of late calling for the censor of certain types of speech. I cannot express how much I am disgusted by this concept. I get it, hate speech is pretty damn horrific and you dont want to hear it. I however do want to hear it, I want to live in a world where everyone can speak their mind, right or wrong. I want to know where people stand. I want to know who I am with and against. More importanly though, I want to live in a world where people arent afraid to express themselves. If we start saying what can and cannot be expressed we may all find ourselves unable to speak our minds. So the next time you see someone trying to promote censorship, be sure to verbally rip them a new asshole.

Brave words from someone who isn’t subject to any of the obvious kinds of hate speech. Well except the part about ripping them a new asshole, however verbally. That’s just bully-talk.

*sniff* *sniff* What’s that I smell? White privilege? Male privilege? All of the above?

  2. Carlos Cabanita says

    Censure can mean two things:
    1. Forbidding or in any other way impeding someone to speak.
    2. Criticizing someone’s speach.
It is correct to say someone’s opinion is morally wrong, even telling them to shut up, without that constituting an act of censorship of the first kind. For that one has to have the power to enforce it.

  3. Pierce R. Butler says

Be sure to apply all the pressure you can to people who say you should apply pressure to people who say what they don’t want to hear, because you don’t want to hear that!

I know, I know: it doesn’t work as a parody with good spelling and punctuation…

  4. Wowbagger, Designated Snarker says

Another person who has yet to grasp the very basic concept that there are people in the world who aren’t him. It’s amazing how much less of this sort of stupid shit we’d hear if they actually stopped, thought and grasped the implications of that.

But then a notorious harasser & name-caller turned up on Lee’s post to announce that “Ophie is just mad because she has a stick pussy instead of a dick.” And, proving my point, Lee Moore disavowed that – to his credit. So it turns out he doesn’t love [some kinds of] hate speech after all.

Well, good. That’s all I’m saying.

If we start saying what can and cannot be expressed we may all find ourselves unable to speak our minds.

    Dear Lee Moore,

With the exception of cis-het white dudes, we already live in that world, largely because cis-het white dudes have a hard time letting anyone who isn’t them get a word in edgewise.

    No love,

    Seven

Oh? Do tell, where are these alleged “articles calling for the censor of certain types of speech”?

I cannot express how much I am disgusted by this concept.

Which concept — the concept that there are some things that just shouldn’t be said? To anyone? Ever? Or the concept of creating a safe space, where one doesn’t have to listen to the usual never-ending cascade of reminders that you are less-than?

I get it, hate speech is pretty damn horrific and you dont want to hear it.

    Interesting.

I however do want to hear it,

Yeah, no. You don’t “get it”.

I want to live in a world where everyone can speak their mind, right or wrong.

Fair enough, on the surface, and I think we’d all like that.

But we can’t have that when sexist, racist, homophobic, ableist, and otherwise-bigoted jackasses make participation so damn uncomfortable for those who are not white, heterosexual, cisgendered, ablebodied, and male.

I want to know where people stand.

This can be done while still avoiding hate speech.

I want to know who I am with and against.

As do I, but again, this is something that doesn’t require tolerating hate speech. People have very subltle and very un-subtle ways of signalling where they stand, you just have to know how to observe.

More importanly though, I want to live in a world where people arent afraid to express themselves. If we start saying what can and cannot be expressed we may all find ourselves unable to speak our minds.

Once again, we can still have that while excluding hate speech. Nobody here is “afraid to express themselves”, and few (if any) use hate speech while speaking our minds. I’m serious, it can be done!

So the next time you see someone trying to promote censorship, be sure to verbally rip them a new asshole.

Now, now, cubling, there’s no need for violence, metaphorical or otherwise. If I ever do see someone “promoting censorship”, I’ll speak my mind, so don’t you worry your fuzzy little head!

    Oh, and one more thing:

    …censorship…

You keep using that word; I do not think it means what you think it means.

How odd, when I click on that link I get this message:

    “This content is currently unavailable
The page you requested cannot be displayed right now. It may be temporarily unavailable, the link you clicked on may have expired, or you may not have permission to view this page.”

What’s up with that? Is Lee censoring the comments on his Facebook page!!1!!!1

I wanted to leave a comment for him….

WHUT ABOUT MAH FREEZE PEACH LEE!!1!!!1!1

  10. johnthedrunkard says

I have no idea who Lee Moore is and he is entirely unhelpful about just WHAT he considers ‘censorship’ and WHAT he wishes people not to be afraid to express.

Freedom of hate speech is horribly uncomfortable. Fred Phelps was ‘free’ to say his toxic drivel. But he was NOT ‘free’ to expect any respect. David Irving is NOT ‘free’ to be given equal time in any public discourse. Jenny McCarthy….. Flat earthers….creationists….MRA nuts…

Contemptible speech deserves contempt. And public discourse needs to include better mechanisms to answer disgraceful, violence provoking, speech. Of course, on the interwebs, any attention generates ‘clicks’ which may be the asshole’s real goal(?)

  11. Wylann says

    He wants to hear it.

…but only if it’s directed at someone else. Then he can criticize it in a totally (cis-white) manly kinda way, without actually calling for censorship.

    Seems legit.
