Just when you think they can’t get any lower, huh?

But I’m sure Non-Stamp Collector will let us know that there’s a measured response to such lowness that will bring LazySavant into the fold so that he will see the light. Outrage to this horror show, apparently, isn’t in any way, shape, or form justifiable if we are to keep the community united.

Me? I say: Fuck a united community.

United we stand, divided we stand without worrying about someone kicking our feet out from under us.

  3. Acolyte of Sagan says

I’ve no legal training (no, really) but it seems to me that LazySavant’s tweet is an admission of intent to commit a crime.

De-lurking a moment to say that when I saw this I got the same, brutal chill that hollowed me when the handwritten note of threats sent to Jessica Alquist came to light a couple of years ago.

Is this a circumstance where the FBI or similar agency could be contacted?

Whether or not any such agency does anything is another matter, of course, and the whole situation is compounded by a much broader socio-cultural problem in which many feel unsafe (with every good reason) even to go to the institutions that are supposed to investigate this kind of vileness and stand as additional bulwark against its predations.

Every visit to your site, Ophelia, is as masterful an education as I have ever received elsewhere. Thank you for the work you continue to do. *stands with Stephanie*

Sort of know him on Twitter – been blocked on the block bot for some time now! Wouldn’t say he is dangerous, apart from to himself. But I’d imagine Stephanie has worked that out by now, not that she should have to check out random idiots on Twitter to make sure they are “not serious”. Especially as in context he is talking to a “MGTOW”, one of the more deranged groups of MRAs on the internet.

Once again for those people who, if they aren’t necessarily Slymepitters, they are the sort of people who defend them and/or continue to treat with them – please, show us examples of this happening from the FTB/A+/Skepchick ‘side’ to illustrate the equivalence between the two groups. Go on, I dare you.

  7. Sassafras says

Has anyone defended this e.g. at the Slymepit or on these blogs?

I don’t know, but I expect the fact that it references a fictional character will figure heavily in the defense of it, since that makes it “parody” in the language of hateful assholes.

    oolon:

    Wouldn’t say he is dangerous

That’s not the point though. He posted a message about someone he hates, saying that he plans to kill and dismember her. Yes, the threat was cartoonishly hyperbolic, and he’s probably not going to follow through with it, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t deeply disturbing to the target.

  9. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

Seconding those who think this should get police attention and surely cannot be illegal.

Even with the USA’s rights to freezepeach.

  10. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

D’oh! That’s “surely cannot be legal.” Naturally.

@Stephanie Zvan : You’ve got my full sympathy and support here, FWIW, even though we’ve argued in the past and disagree on a couple of issues. Nobody deserves that sort of nastiness and cyberbullying.

Sassafras and yahweh: Um, fyi, the fictional character of Buffalo Bill was based on a real serial killer, Ed Gein. Famous for making ‘woman suits’. It’s not a purely fictional reference.

  13. Sassafras says

Pteryxx – Ahh, I had heard of Ed Gein but I only knew about the uh, “furniture” he made, not the “suits”. That certainly makes using it as a casual threat even more disturbing.
