Health Minister Maria Isabel Rodriguez said the baby had died five hours after the C-section.
Doctors decided the procedure had become necessary when the woman started having contractions on Sunday night, Ms Rodriguez said.
She insisted that the medical intervention did not contravene the court ruling.
Under the ruling, she said, “mother had to be given all the necessary protection to save her life, while analysing how long one could wait and do the utmost to save the baby’s life”.
For no reason since the baby had no brain and would not survive more than a few hours no matter what. One should not have waited one single second.
A medical committee at her maternity hospital, the Ministry of Health and rights groups had supported her request to terminate her pregnancy.
But the Supreme Court argued that the “the rights of the mother cannot take precedence over those of the unborn child or vice versa, and that there is an absolute bar to authorising an abortion” under the Salvadoran constitution.
El Salvador banned all types of abortion in 1999. The sentence for doctors and women violating that ban is 50 years in prison.
50 years.
There’s just no punishment harsh enough for women, is there.
I can’t figure out whether to be happy or sad at this news.
I mean… at least she can heal now, but… fifty years???
And a C-Section is major surgery. I’m not a doctor, but I assume there were other, less risky ways to remove fetus for someone with Lupus and kidney issues.
Whichever way one looks at it, it must have been very hard for the mother, Beatriz.
One does not have to look very far to find absurdities in positions taken by the government of El Salvador and the Catholic hierarchy. A baby with no brain formed is about as much a ‘human’ as an excised appendix or an amputated limb. The clergy do no clamour for all to respect the sanctity or right to life of such a biological entity.
It is all about the power and privilege of The Brotherhood that runs the country. A mafia.

We are familiar with this game. . . trying to wait until the last 30 seconds before the mother’s final breath.
I hate this so much.
This is an impossibility.
And thus a guarantee that the rights of the woman will never be taken seriously.

Then is “baby” the right word for it? Babies have brains.
So, what happens to Beatriz and the doctors who performed the C-section now?
Are they being left in peace to heal or, ridiculously and cruelly, charged with some stupid (non) offence?
It doesn’t seem clear from that BBC world news piece.
Save the baby’s life? Part of the mix seems to be that they refuse to admit that the fetus is doomed. Its life cannot be saved. We aren’t even asking them to privilege the mother’s life with respect to the baby’s (though I think they should); we’re asking them to privilege the mother’s life over nothing, over a few scraps of cells that will never live. We’re asking them to consider that the mother, alive, is a better outcome than the mother, dead, because the baby is already a goner. There is nothing to save. WHY CAN’T THEY UNDERSTAND THIS??
