Beatriz

Bastards.

El Salvador’s Supreme Court has said no. No abortion for Beatriz; she has to die, because she’s pregnant.

Beatriz is carrying an anencephalic fetus, which means it has no brain and is only expected to survive at maximum a few hours after birth, even if she carries it to full term.

Beatriz has lupus, worsened by a kidney malfunction, and it is very dangerous for her to be pregnant.

“The doctors are saying it’s very critical because the lupus may be reactivated and if the lupus is reactivated it is very dangerous for her health,” [her lawyer] added.

She is now 26-weeks pregnant, and every day it becomes more risky for her to be pregnant and have an abortion at such a late stage.

Bastards. Fiends. Demons.

On a side note, this is exactly why the cowardly stance of successive US governments to NOT fund abortion at home and generally to be very careful to not upset the anti-abortion lobby makes it incredibly difficult for the US government to be pressured into publicly using it’s sway to force the El Salvadors and Nicaraguas of the world to re-join the civilized world on this. Sigh.

I get what you’re saying, but, the US using “sway” in Latin America is one of the reasons that area is the mess it is.
Once again the regressive influence of the”love of jesus”comes down on the side of suffering and death.
They’re only lucky there is no hell for their imaginary god to condem them to.

    It’s a shame there aren’t a billion Dr Morgentalers.

Beat me to it. Morgentaler was not only a champion for women’s reproductive rights he was a great humanist leader.

The people who say “I’m pro-choice, but” have assured me that there is nuance that I must be missing here, because I’m fucking pissed and broken-hearted. I can’t imagine how she is feeling right now.

“I got involved because this was, for me, a fight for justice, for fundamental justice, and the fact that I could possibly do something to help women in spite of a law which did not allow me to do it.” “I was willing to go to jail, I was willing to die for it,” he told CTV’s Canada AM Wednesday. “So when I look back on it, I look at a life of achievement because I achieved a great deal and I’m very proud of it.”

Damn, Morgantaler, you are an inspiration to us all.

I wonder if Beatriz could apply for refugee status somewhere

It’s interesting. Ecuador takes in Assange. Where are the countries willing to stand for women whose most fundamental human rights are being violated?

where she’ll be treated as a human being instead of livestock.

The treatment of female cows is an absolute horror. Those used for their milk are constantly impregnated, have their children stolen from them (they’re exploited for milk or killed for veal), and then killed when they’re “spent.” They don’t choose this, and they suffer terribly. They’re violated in every conceivable way. The acceptance of their treatment has a lot to do with the idea that it’s OK to oppress human females reproductively.

Beatrix is being sacrificed on altar of the god of deranged extremists. It’s hard to believe that even the most fervent Roman Catholic could sanction this.

    tantum religio potuit suadere malorum.

  8. MrFancyPants says

Speechless. What must it feel like to be condemned to death by biology, and to turn to people for help, and the state answers “No. You deserve to die.”

Is there any way that we can help her? Is she trying to leave the country?

  9. Beatrice (looking for a happy thought) says

So… any countries offering her asylum? No? Bastards.

Aw, crap, I hadn’t heard about Dr. Morgentaler yet. Though given his age, I can’t be too surprised.

I’ve… well, I’ve been in the same room as Dr. Morgenaler, anyway. The band Moxy Fruvous did several pro-choice fundraisers in the 1990s; Dr. Morgentaler was often in the audience, and would get mentioned by name. (Jian Ghomeshi in particular was active in pro-choice organizations in Ontario from when he was still a University student.)

I have a great deal of respect for the man, and his work still isn’t done. There’s no access at all in PEI, for example, and support in the rest of the Maritimes is pretty spotty.

  11. johnthedrunkard says

Amnesty International? Embassies and consulates of civilized countries?

  12. Rebekah, the Wily Jew says

It is depressing that no one if offering her asylum.

I knew Chile had draconian laws, but some reason I assumed the nations allowing marriage equality would have more liberal abortion laws. Catholicism’s poison runs deep.

  13. Simon says

My understanding is that even travel is very risky and dangerous for her. I think the only possible intervention at this point would be to occupy the hospital or something to that effect.

  14. Tsu Dho Nimh says

At 26 weeks, it would be a viable preemie if it weren’t anencephalic.

How about a C-section and let God decide what happens.

    [Cross-posted from Pharyngula]

    New development:

El Salvador’s health department OKs cesarean section to deliver baby of woman denied abortion:

El Salvador’s government gave permission Thursday for doctors to perform a premature delivery for a seriously ill woman whose pregnancy attorneys say is putting her life at risk.

Because the pregnancy is 26 weeks along, abortion laws are no longer at play, according to women’s groups who have supported her petition. Rather, the health ministry can determine what’s most medically sound for the mother versus the unborn baby.

“She is in the hands of top-notch doctors,” Rodriguez said. “The medical team at the Maternity Hospital is ready to act immediately at the slightest sign of danger.”

So they’re just going to call it a delivery, not an abortion, and basically just say fuck off to the court. Unless I’m missing something here?

  17. PatrickG says

    Also this:

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights, based in Costa Rica, said El Salvador needs to take urgent action to protect the life of Beatriz. That means performing an abortion, a spokeswoman for the court said.

It has asked El Salvador’s government to comply with its nonbinding resolution before June 8. The court does not have the power to take steps against member countries such as El Salvador.

Sadly nonbinding, but a heartening sign that international institutions are following and taking what action they can.

Also, to clarify the question I didn’t quite ask, I’m missing something in terms of the definition of “abortion” and “premature delivery” after 26 weeks, in El Salvador specifically, that is.

I’m having difficulty tracking down the actual statute in El Salvador (admittedly haven’t put much time into it yet), but I guess we’ll have to wait and see what the response is from the pro-death camp is (i.e. the Catholic Church and similar ilk).

    Murderers, killers, torturers.

Who have just proven themselves to be pro-death and anti-life and extreme misogynists.

I wonder if its possible for her to be smuggled or evacuated out of the country and given a life saving abortion before its too late? I hope someone(s) is working on that now and makes it so. Maybe they can prevent this decision from creating murderers of El Salvador’s Supreme Court “justices” and leave them as only attempted murderers instead.

Remind me not to kiss Jesus then! Also ye-non-existent-gods! Really? Way to make people want to run screaming from what sounds an especially cruel and disgusting religion then.

(If memory serves even Mother Teresa didn’t believe in her “god” at the end though?)
