Another one

In El Salvador this time. (Blargh, what a name for a country, eh? Imagine being a citizen of The Savior. Gag me.) (And in this case, what a fucking bitter joke.)

According to a report from Amnesty International, a seriously ill and pregnant El Salvadorian woman may face jail time if she goes forward with a lifesaving and medically recommended abortion. Abortion is illegal under all circumstances in El Salvador.

The 22-year-old mother of one, identified only as Beatriz, is four-and-a-half months pregnant, but her doctors have confirmed that the fetus has anencephaly (developing without a brain and certain parts of the skull) and that the pregnancy is nonviable. In addition to the fetal diagnosis, Beatriz is experiencing critical health complications related to her lupus and kidney disease.

The hospital treating Beatriz requested legal permission to perform the abortion more than a month ago, but authorities have still not agreed to let them proceed.

The Savior to Beatriz: die, bitch.

The Savior to Beatriz: die, bitch.

    Worse than that even:

    The Savior to Beatriz:” ”

In fact I would bet money on approval arriving a day or two after Beatriz dies. Thus fulfilling both the requirement of the religious law and of appearing to be compassionate.

    Win-Win.

    Except for Beatriz.

Whose opinion can safefully be ignored because a) She’s a woman & b) Won’t be around much longer to voice her opinion.

again, those who claim to be “pro-life” are anything but. They are pro-control.

I often try to figure out what is going in someone’s thoughts and decisions. A lot of these people think they are doing the right thing and being pro-life by denying this woman an abortion. I think for some people, they are afraid to think morality is not black and white, that there really aren’t any rules. I wonder if the El Salvador supreme court justices are afraid of losing their jobs or being shunned from the community if they agree to the abortion. It shows why religion can be so dangerous. If you don’t go along with the “group” you are shut out of the community.
All of this speculation and rambling I am doing is not helping Beatriz. I gather that she is not able to leave her country. I don’t know if another country could give her asylum (probably not the US, because of the christofascists in congress)

Had a similar situation, medically, here. Patient got an abortion promptly and without a fuss and left the hospital in good health. She’s still alive and healthy.

El Salvador is trying for a two-fer, fetus and mother both dead. The Catholic Church will be overjoyed at this display of piety.

Had a light bulb moment earlier. I was reading Tanya Gold’s current article on abortion on Comment is Free (part of The Guardian in the UK). Lots of comments from antichoicers about how women who choose an abortion are ‘selfish’.

I thought about that in the context of Savita, and also now the woman in this post, and it occurred to me – they don’t just mean that women wanting a career or education or freedom is selfish.

They also mean that choosing to be alive or be healthy is selfish.

If you’re a woman, that is.

    Chilling.
