Shock-horror: Obama wants (and says he wants) his daughters to have reproductive rights. Imagine that! He wants them not to be trapped by unwanted pregnancies if they don’t choose to be. (That’s not a tautology. Some women choose to continue pregnancies that they don’t want.) LSN wants to lose its lunch at the thought.
Mr. Romney wants to get rid of funding for Planned Parenthood. I think that’s a bad idea. I’ve got two daughters. I want them to control their own health care choices. We’re not going backwards, we’re going forwards.
We all know the word “choice” is a euphemism for “abortion.” And the fight to defund Planned Parenthood is all about abortion. So clear as mud, Obama was advocating the freedom for his daughters to abort his own grandchildren.
Yes – because his daughters’ bodies belong to them, not to him.

I think the difference here is that Obama is thinking of his daughters as human beings with a right to agency, not vessels that might happen to bear him grandchildren someday.
They’re not his “grandchildren” if the girls can abort “them.” They’re his daughters’ fetuses, not “children” of any stripe (not even babies–babies have been born), and fetuses are not aborted. Pregnancies are aborted.

I’m doing a scary/brave thing tomorrow: I’m going to KFC for a $1 sandwich. And I’m telling them I’m there because Pepsico has some of the most progressive employment policies re: QUILTBAG people. Why is this particularly brave? Because I live in a VERY small, rural town (KFC’s only there b/c it’s by a truck stop & hotel in snow emergencies, when the interstate shuts down). The town if full of fundamentalist churches. Nobody here knows I’m: Queer, GenderQueer & atheist. While I won’t, specifically, “out” myself, they’ll assume. Because this town thrives on gossip. Do I think fighting one corporation against another is particularly effective? Usually, no. But it’s my only avenue of meat world protest. Wish me luck.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the Obamas (Barack and Michelle) used birth control as they’ve been married awhile and only have 2 children. Perhaps the POTUS and FLOTUS just want the same things for their children that they had themselves; freedom to plan their lives, careers and control their futures (inasmuch as that is possible).
But lets be honest here; no successful Republican (with the possible exception of the Romneys) candidate’s marriage was birth control free. They are not Quiverfull adherents. Unless every Republican candidate has compromised fertility or low sex drive or many children, they used birth control.
So do the vast majority of people, in the course of their lives – women and men who are responsible and thoughtful and reasonably unburdened with shame take control of their reproduction. And, contrary to what some organizations are saying, the vast majority of women do not use birth control pills for medical reasons (ie. control periods), they use them to stop the babeez.
How does this play with prospective voters, the majority of whom must have used birth control or had a partner who used birth control? How is this message even entertained?
And I note that the raw-throated religious fascists do not even bother to employ sleight of hand when making Planned Parenthood synonymous with abortion anymore; evidently they’ve become so confident in their audience’s contempt for women’s health that they can openly dismiss the vast majority of PP’s services for women (and *gasp* planned families!). I honestly don’t know how these ignorant psychopaths can actually make a living in the modern world.

I spent forty-five minutes recently asking that question once, until the person responded, “Probably some community service.” For murder! Her only explanation? “You can’t assume I think the punishment should always fit the crime.”
I told her she was lying when she used that word, and that she should probably stop bearing false witness since I remembered reading something about not doing that in her holy book.
Following that logic having a miscarriage is manslaughter. What punishment would they give for that?
