“Just so you know, you’re a piece of shit.”

And then there’s Kyle Sandilands. He’s a shock jock in Australia. A journalist called Alison Stephenson wrote an unfavorable review of his shock jock radio show. He replied to her on the air.

Some fat slag on news.com.au has already branded it a disaster. You can tell by reading the article that she just hates us and has always hated us.

What a fat bitter thing you are. You’re deputy editor of an online thing. You’ve got a nothing job anyway. Just so you know, you’re a piece of shit.

This low thing, Alison Stephenson, deputy editor of news.com.au online. Alison, you’re supposed to be impartial, you little troll.

You’re a bullshit artist, girl. You should be fired from your job. Your hair’s very 90s. And your blouse. You haven’t got that much titty to be having that low cut a blouse. Change your image, girl. Watch your mouth or I’ll hunt you down.

No offers to kick her in the cunt? Huh; I thought that was part of the package deal.

White Ribbon makes pleasanter reading…except that it shouldn’t be necessary.

This is not the first time that fucking toad has been news for some hateful crap he said on air. This time the advertisers seem to be listening, so it might finally have some repercussions.

  2. 'Tis Himself, OM says

How old is Sandilands? Seven? Does his mommy know he’s in a radio studio with a live mike?

  3. Philip Legge says

I hope so, Alethea, but I’m thinking it will just be regarded as another of the usual celebrity/media personality beat-ups bullshit, where anything can be said and fifteen minutes later its forgotten. It’s far from being the first time Kyle’s demonstrated his overt misogyny on the air, but with the recent awareness brought to this form of hate-speech by campaigns like #mencallmethings, perhaps there will be a different outcome this time. Maybe.

There were already several reasons why I don’t listen to the radio but now I have one more.

  5. Mandrellian says

Yep, this is certainly not the first time Sandilands has acted like a complete fuckwit – first time I’ve noticed his bullshit getting attention anywhere other than Oz though.

I’d like to think this’ll be the last straw for this particular rodeo-clown but our media culture here seems all-too tolerant of such hateful spew, all-too eager to patronisingly say “boys will be boys” and let him keep his job (as long as the sponsors he drives away can be replaced – after all, publicity is publicity and you can always find people who don’t care who sells their product).

What I’d like to know is if his female co-host Jackie has anything to say about how Kyle talks to women who disagree with his high opinion of himself.

Another interesting development: Miranda Devine, well-known conservative Catholic Murdoch homophobe columnist (sorry for the redundancies) with a history of ignorant & bigoted spew herself, mostly toward GLBT people or any considered “left”, wrote a smashing hit-piece on Kyle after his latest mouthfart. Although it illustrated perfectly that Miranda’s ability to recognise blatant misogyny is not at all complimented by any sort of ability to recognise her own numerous bigotries, I found that what she wrote was more or less spot on.

Damn you, Kyle, for making me agree with Miranda DeVicious!

Uh, yeah. Sandilands is one of the radio hosts who, in 2008, was involved in another little incident.

They had a mother and daughter on their show, the mother saying she wanted to know if the girl had had sex. The girl, who was fourteen years old, was hooked up to a lie detector – live on air, and against her wishes. The hosts joked about how she was scared.

The girl then revealed that she had been raped when she was 12. Sandilands’ reply was: “Right. And is that, is that the only experience you’ve had?”

It’s really hard to express the depth of my contempt for this man. He’s one of the worst of the current crop of shock jocks – a none-too-bright narcissist with no discernible talent, who is quite happy to do real damage to other people just to get himself some attention. Sadly, he also appears to have convinced himself that his sociopathic viciousness makes him a brave warrior.

    you’re supposed to be impartial

Apparently being impartial means that you’re not allowed to criticize anyone.

I feel like pointing this out because it seems to me to be a wide-spread view. Somehow impartiality has come to mean that you don’t point out when people are wrong, or if you do, you have to criticize both sides equally, otherwise you’re biased.
Even if one side is clearly right and the other wrong, you must criticize both or neither.

A simple, straightforward critique of a person’s behavior is evidence of bias. When did that happen?

    Rorschach:

Haha, Fake Alan Joyce has been hilarious this week, especially with the #QantasLuxury debacle.

Now I’m wondering if Qantas was advertising for real on this show. According to the Media Watch transcript I linked above, they pulled their ads back in 2008 after the rape victim incident. I suppose they could have waited until the fuss died down then started running ads again – but I have no idea.

(not that they could really get much worse publicity at the moment, so hey).

I have once been in the same room as Kyle Sandilands. He is the only person I have ever encountered who I’ve wanted to physically assault just for being.

If I was a theist, his bare existence would be proof against that of God.

  11. roger says

He keeps referring to “us”- does he have a multiple personality or delusions of grandeur?

The girl, who was fourteen years old, was hooked up to a lie detector – live on air, and against her wishes. The hosts joked about how she was scared.

This looks like assault and imprisoning the girl against her will. Why weren’t Sandilands and his accomplices prosecuted?

  12. Anton_bradley says

He’s a ‘shock-jock’, this is what he is paid to do: in the last few days he has has generated enough publicity to keep enough people tuning in to see what he says next that his employers probably feel he merits his salary.
Unfortunately, as long as utterances from fuckwits like this are a staple diet for a huge component of the population, he and his comments will remain the public domain

  13. Svlad Cjelli says

“You haven’t got that much titty to be having that low cut a blouse.”

And the man has a lackluster fashionsense to boot. #andJaywalking

  14. julian says

Watch your mouth or I’ll hunt you down.

You allowed to make threats like that on air?

What a nasty human being. Shame people like him are given a podium at the expense of the legitimately deserving.

  15. Sunny says

There is apparently an apology (from Wikipedia):

On 24 November, Sandilands released a statement during the airing of The Kyle and Jackie O Show in response to claim that the comments he made were sexist, “If you took a personal offence to it Ali I’m sorry, but maybe you should think again before you start going (against) different people. If they say I can dish it out but I can’t take it, I never ever dish it out first. I only ever retaliate to someone else’s crazy allegations.” He defended his initial remarks and said that they were his opinions in response to Alison Stephenson’s opinions which were posted on news.com.au. During the broadcast, Sandilands also denied that the comments had any sexist intention.[

  16. says

Yes I saw that in the reporting yesterday. Entirely typical of this kind of thing: if you took offense; I had good reason; you should worry more before you criticize anything a misogynist pig says; you’re crazy and you lied about me. Check, check, check, check, check, check.

  17. Mandrellian says

    Ophelia @18

It doesn’t surprise me that Jackie defended Slanderland. As far as I can discern she has about as much integrity as Vyle himself and half as much personality – but about the same level of pathological narcissism.

Jackie may also be simply defending her meal ticket. Talking crap on the radio is a sweet gig, especially when your co-host does most of the chat and takes most of the heat. If Kyle got the boot, she might have to rely on her own appeal to get work. If I was as personality-deficient as Jackie I’d be worried.

But even if Kyle gets kicked off the program, or the station, there’ll always be work for a human headline. Look up Australian shock-jock Alan Jones, probably the most viciously ignorant bastard on the air, or Andrew Bolt, Murdoch columnist with pretensions toward intelligence and a long history of shaking his fist at the kids on his lawn. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Kyle’s angling for his own one-man show or centre-page idiot-pandering column with this schtick of his.

  18. Aliasalpha says

Good news, just heard something in passing on one of those awful morning tv shows that says they’re hemorrhaging advertisers, hopefully this one really will make a bit of a difference

  19. Jurjen S. says

I think my irony meter just exploded as a result of radio shock jock accusing someone else of having “a nothing job” and being “a piece of shit.” Admittedly, it was already held together with duct tape, chewing gum and binder twine after having exploded repeatedly during the coverage of the OWS protests and the Republican candidates’ “debates.”
