Off to Omaha!

I’m about to hop on a plane to the Midwest Humanist and Freethought conference! I’ll be yet again ranting about how religion treats women (Hint: not well).

I’m not going to lie. I know nothing about Omaha. I drove past it once on my way to an Ecology conference in Lincoln. I’m sure the locals will prove it’s awesomeness to me. Though we’re starting off with dinner at Herman Cain’s Godfather Pizza, so I’m a little wary… Is this like SSA’s field trip to the Creation Museum or something? Does every slice come with a free side of bigotry?

I know I have at least one reader in Omaha who can’t make stuff during the day. I’m not sure if I’ll have time for other meetups, but watch my Twitter feed for any announcements about bars we happen to be in. Knowing atheist conferences, it’ll probably happen.

The national music museum with scads of fabulous musical instruments is about 2-1/2 hours to the North in Vermillion, SD.The only other site to see in NE is Carhenge, which is on the other side of the state.

Omaha is famous for:1 – The Henry Doorly Zoo – ranked second in the world (behind China – I guess because they have the pandas).2 – The home of the College World Series3 – The home of Warren BuffetI’m sure there are a lot more things I could mention, but for now, let’s just be happy we finally have a group of atheists. And BTW, Herman Cain was President & CEO of Pillsbury which purchased Godfathers in 1990. He left Pillsbury in 2002.   Disclaimer….I’m one of the organizers of the conference. It’s gonna be great!

My wife is from Omaha, and I’ve been there a number of times. I’d recommend checking out the Omaha Zoo – it’s one of the best in the nation. Also make sure to get dinner at a steakhouse one night – they have great beef in Omaha.

I second avoiding Godfather’s pizza (based on experience from 1989); they put the toppings underneath the cheese, so there’s this horrible grease layer in the pizza unless you order only non-greasy toppings.Oh, and the beer is meh.

For a good steak, try Gorat’s or Caniglia’s. The Bohemian Cafe is a real treat. Big Mama’s Kitchen is famous for Soul Food. The Zoo is world-class. The Joslyn Art Museum is worth a look. For night-life, be sure to check out The Old Market.

It was nice meeting you! I can’t wait to hear all of the speeches. Also, seeing you facepalm right when I said the word “Elevatorgate” made my day.—That one guy whose table you stood next to when your table was blocked off by people.

I go to Godfathers rather often (including tonight), but really, Zio’s is the best in Omaha in terms of flavor and quality. Try to go before you leave town — and stop by Ted and Wally’s Ice Cream for dessert. :D

I was one of those who attended the conference and I really enjoyed your presentation.  Thanks.
