Wooo, atheism!

A couple of days ago I was walking with a friend to dinner. As I was crossing a busy intersection, a guy pops his head out of the passenger seat of his truck and happily screams “Woooo, atheism!” at me. I waved back, but didn’t get a good look at who it was since I was trying not to get hit by cars – I assume it was a club member.

This sort of random thing happens more and more the longer I’ve been president of the Non-Theists, and let me tell you: It totally makes my day. More often than not, when I go to a bar or club I’ll have at least someone give me a “Woooo, atheism!” high five. It’s usually a club member I don’t know as well (my friends don’t typically greet me this way, though that would be neat), or someone who never really comes to meetings but is happy that we exist.

And it’s another reason why I like having my occasional atheist t-shirt or button. I’ve struck up random, cool conversations waiting in lines, getting food, at the airport… It’s cool having that atheist secret hand shake!

Anyone else have any little, positive atheist experiences like that? If not, get a button or something!

As someone who doesn't go to meetings but follows the club on campus, thanks for everything you do!

I'd love to be more outwardly atheist at Purdue, but I'm always afraid of being the target of religious retribution. Same reason I don't want a Darwin fish on my car!

If it makes you feel any better, I have a Darwin Fish, Obama Sticker, and Republicans for Voldemort sticker on my car, and nothing has ever happened to it! :)

WHOO ATHEISM! Is that good from a non-club member?

I’ve recently purchases a little Scarlet ‘A’ from the RichardDawkins.net store, and I plan to pin it to a brown fedora when I finally find one. Add my black jacket, and I’ll finally have a look even I like. =P

I met one of the Crocoduck ties. It was being worn by PZ at the time, but you know, crocoduck tie!

I wear a scarlet A pin most of the time, and reinforce negative stereotypes by regularly flipping off the pro-lifers that hang out near a clinic I drive by on the way to work.

Yep, I wear my atheist shirts for the student group on my campus (The Atheist & Agnostic Society at Iowa State University) proudly, as well as other shirts like the There Probably is No God Now Stop Worrying & Enjoy Your Life; as well as a more controversial shirt from CFI which says "The reason religious beliefs need protection from ridicule is that they are ridiculous".

I get lots of dirty looks but they are vastly outnumbered by positive comments about liking my shirts. (Which is surprising because my campus is also a more-conservative-than-usual for a college campus type.)

My campus club (Atheists and Skeptics) did a "High Five an Atheist" event. One lady was so happy to see active atheists that she hugged us all, and then came back later and hugged us again. Quite uplifting.

@Tori – I love the slogan on your CFI shirt – "The reason religious beliefs need protection…"

I may have to look into that. I have been thinking about getting an "A" for my car or a new Darwin fish. I would love to have a Darwin fish eating a "Jesus" fish but that might be a little too offensive.
