Underwater Adventures

Ashley and I went to Underwater Adventures at the Mall of America last Friday.   She had never been to UA, and neither of us had done the behind the scenes tour.

We arrived at UA at about 5:40pm.  We had 20 minutes before the behind the scenes tour, and so we wandered around in the first part of the exhibit, which is set up like a forest.  We saw turtles, freshwater fish and snakes.  We walked under a tunnel that was designed to look like the inside of a beaver dam.

At 6pm we headed back for the behind the scenes tour, which included a tour of the kitchen in which the UA staff prepares the fish for all of the different animals (cleanest kitchen at MOA according to the tour guide!), and a tour of the lab where the scientists do water testing and where they raise a few of the newborn hatchlings.  Then there was the area above the tanks!  We saw a few of the isolation tanks where a sick turtle was being nursed to health, and where some of the “overflow” fish were being stored (I’m not sure if they were being held until they could be traded to another aquarium or what…), and one of the tanks was where the huge octopus was being held.  She was really active – undulating her tentacles for us and displaying her 200 suction cups per arm.

Then we were on the catwalks over the main exhibint tanks!  We had the chance to feed the rays, puffer fish and other animals from one habitat, and then we looked down into the shark tank.  They were lazily gliding through the water, or sleeping on the sandy bottom, and one shark was kind enough to show off its Jaws “dorsal fin cresting the surface of the water” impression.

After the tour we went back to the public exhibit and walked through the underwater viewing tube.

The coolest part of the exhibit for me was the jellyfish display.  The rooms that housed the jellyfish were dark – virtually the only lighting in the place came from the tanks themselves, the majority of which were floor-to-ceiling tubes spaced throughout the room.    The effect was ghostly and I felt as if I was in a technologically advanced society…perhaps one in which I was under observation, rather than the other way around.  My favorite picture from the whole outing came from the entry to the jellyfish room.  This is Ashley silhouetted in front of one of the flat wall tanks:

It was a good time, a great exhibit, and I highly recommend this experience for any child or adult who finds themselves in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, and has a place in their heart for the fishies.

It's not Jamaica, but…

Okay, so I can’t justify plane fare to anyplace warm and sunny right now, but we did get a pretty sweet deal at the Water Street Inn right on the St. Croix River in Stillwater, MN.

We’ll be leaving Minneapolis on Friday and stay through Sunday.  Part of the weekend getaway package is a three-course meal in the hotel dining room on Friday evening.  We’ll spend a lot of the time inside reading magazines and books in front of the fireplace (!) and lounging in the two bedroom suite (!!) and taking baths in the double jacuzzi hot tub(!!!)

And once all of that becomes just too absolutely boring, dah-ling, we can stroll through the downtown shopping district of Stillwater.

Weekend Report

The weekend started off well – I won a raffle drawing at work!  Not to look a raffle win horse in the mouth, but it was a drawing put on by the new cafeteria company and the prizes were kind of hilarious.

Biodork is the proud owner of an 18-pack box of single-serving low-calorie Pringles – yeah!!!!!  Best win ever…the lottery can take a hike – I want the Pringles.  I wouldn’t joke about sour cream n’ onion.  And back off on the sweater-on-sweater action, yo.  I work at Our Lady of Perpetual Chilliness.)

On Saturday my friend Courtney took Aaron and I to Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America.  She had received four free unlimited ride passes, so we were off!  A day of amusement park rides and maybe some arcade games, and if we get in a really big double-dog-dare-you mood, we can go on the log water ride and walk around for a few hours with wet underwear and socks!

Anyone see a problem with this?  The Mall of America…on a Saturday…in the  middle of winter when all of the state of Minnesota is looking for indoor fun to appease the stir-crazy munchkins?  *shudders* It just highlights the fact that I’m a sucker for a deal.  Nickelodeon Universe unlimited passes are usually $30/person so Courtney was offering us $60 worth of free tickets. *I shake my head sadly* I sold my sanity for $60.

No, no, no…it wasn’t that bad!  I mean sure, the crowds were surly and the air was filled with the sound of crying babies and way-too-cool-for-you teenage valley girl screaming, but forget all that…I’m surrounded by rollercoasters and thrill rides!  This is the best picture of the entire day: Hubby with the Rock Bottom Plunge roller coaster in the background:

And I REALLY wanted to go on the Flying Dutchman’s Ghostly Gangplank adventure course, but it was over an hour in line, so we decided to come back on another day.  That’s the sweet thing about being so close to the Mall of America – I can visit on a Tuesday evening and practically have the entire place to myself.  Love it!

After Nickelodeon Universe, the three of us went to the best Mexican food restaurant in town: Little Tiajuana’s.  See, it says so right here (picture from citypages):

Later that night, Aaron and I went to a comedy club in Bloomington called the Juke Joint.  Between the owner, the emcee, the two featured comedians and then the main comedian – John Bush – we had a total of five comics, and they were all funny.  We didn’t have much for hecklers, but there was a fairly inebriated bachelorette party throwing out the occasional annoying comment.  As one comedian said “I know you think you’re making the show better, but no…that’s ME…in spite of you!”  Here’s some Jon Bush – who doesn’t love potty humor? 🙂

Weekend Report

Off to Madison, WI!

I’m off to Madison, WI with some friends to hang out with some other friends for the weekend.  I won’t have access to a computer, so no new updates until Sunday night!  Unfortunately, Madison isn’t far enough removed from Minneapolis longitudinally to escape the snow.  In honor of snow, this I leave you this bit of inanity from Letterman (click to view video at gawker.com).  It’s here…it’s LOTS of snow..Is it the snowpocalypse?  snowmageddon?  snow-mega-don?

Also, this dude!  Way to fuel the panic!  FREAKOUT!

Off to Madison, WI!

Ahhhh, weekend.

I had a nice weekend.

Saturday I went to lunch with my friend Elizabeth, and afterwards we partook in my naughty pedicure indulgence.  Really, any spa treatment is a-okay by me (“Are you ready for your treatment?”  “I enjoy my treatments”)…I just wish they didn’t cost as much as an off-broadway show ticket.  Damn it, and I still haven’t seen Rent live!  Seriously, I don’t do it that often, but who the hell pays $65 to have someone rub their feet and paint their toe nails?  Oh, I do.  Did I mention that I only do it rarely?  Not that I feel guilty or anything, but…I work hard for my money and I can spend it anyway I want to and you can’t stop me!

Saturday night was a nice, quiet one.  I watched Up (the Pixar cartoon) with the Hubby, and I sobbed like a baby during the opening scene when they did the Carl and Ellie montage, and then Hubby said something cute and appropriate like “that’ll be us”…and then finished the thought with…”but you can’t die first”, which I can’t decide is sweet or mean…

Sunday I had breakfast with some friends, and then went grocery shopping at Target, which is NEVER a good idea on a weekend afternoon.  I actually stopped at Target prior to breakfast to pick up my share of the breakfast potluck (cream cheese and lox, and bagels for the gluten-eating infidels) and almost cried because the store was so wonderfully empty, and I knew that I would have to come back later in the afternoon when the crowds had invaded.

Except clueless, self-centered soccer moms racing up and down the narrow aisles, yelling into surgically attached smartphones with screaming spawn-children hanging from the carts like the cast of Jackass might rank a little higher than zombies on the scare-o-meter.

So, all in all, not a bad weekend.  I was able to get some chores done (still have to change the litterbox, darn it), read a few things, watch a few things, see a few friends and hang out with the Hubby.  Priceless (well, except for that pedicure).

Credit where credit’s due: I found the zombie horde picture at http://www.moonbattery.com/zombie-horde.jpg (but this blogger doesn’t cite a reference, so I’m not sure where it’s from originally).  Moonbattery is a conservative blog, and you know those are always good for a few zombies.  Moonbattery is actually using the zombie pic with the following caption: “San Francisco panhandlers echoing Obama’s call for change.”  I think my use of zombiage is funnier.

Ahhhh, weekend.

Snow Tubing

Saturday 09:45

We’re going to Eko Backen today to experience the northern activity called snow tubing [snoh too-bing].  Assuming I don’t crash and die I’ll post a pic or two when we get back later this evening.  Check out the video on their website – great marketing material…you can actually here the guy say “Ah shit!” on the way down, lol.

Saturday 16:28

We just got back from Eko Backen – I didn’t die, and we had a blast.  The weather was warm (for winter) and sunny.  There were these tows ropes that pulled you back up to the top of the hill!  You know…snowy fun without any of the cardiovascular benefits.  Seriously though, the tow rope wasn’t exactly easy.  We had to grab the slick, slushy rope and hold on tight – good workout for the biceps!  As my gloves got wetter and my muscles more tired with each progressive tow, it became difficult to hang on, and sometimes the rope would slide through my fingers and leave me stranded halfway up the hill.  Then I had to move out of the way quickly (so I didn’t screw up the person behind me) and schlep up the hill the ol’ fashioned way.

The hills were definitely sufficient; there were options from “family” to “expert”, so you could choose your own steepness and speed.  What I really liked is that the park wasn’t over-regulated.  There were employees watching things, but no one was playing snow hill dictator.  Everyone was responsible for their own fun.   I went tubing with Hubby and my Little Sis, Ashley.  Ashley and I were paired together through a mentoring program two years ago and it has been quite the experience!
