Cross-Country Connections: Bookshelves

Cross-Country Connections is a Biodork weekly blog entry dedicated to telling stories in pictures of three family members – me, my sister and Mom – living in very different locations across the country. Every week we choose a different theme and then take or contribute a personal photo that fits the theme. This week’s theme is Bookshelves.

From me in Minneapolis, Minnesota:

This is the teen room at the Minneapolis Central Library. This was set up to be a space for teens to come browse for young adult books, surf the web on the public computers or hang out in the reading area – bean bags overlooking bustling Hennepin Avenue from a second-story vantage through floor-to-ceiling windows.

From Erin in Bellingham, Washington:

My husband’s bookshelf, full of evidence of his true nerdistry.

From Mom in Carbondale, Illinois:

Part of my personal collection.  So many wonderful books and now I have time to start reading many of them.

Cross-Country Connections: On This Day

Every week we choose a different theme and then take or contribute a personal photo that fits the theme. This week’s theme is On This Day.

From Mom in Carbondale, Illinois:

On this day of really cold (at least for Southern Illinois) weather – I did get dressed but pretty much did little else beyond sitting in front of technology.  Nothing worthwhile accomplished but hey….on this day it is Sunday!

From me in Minneapolis, Minnesota:

From Nicolai Copernicus’s On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies. On this day (February 13th) in 1633, Italian philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei arrives in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating Copernican theory, which holds that the Earth revolves around the Sun. From Erin in Bellingham, Washington:

On this day in Bellingham, WA, I visited Silver Lake Park and spent some time hanging out with my husband and my dog.

From Erin in Bellingham, Washington:

My bedroom wall… My husband and I have been meaning to decorate this wallspace for so long but we’re waiting until we’re the same apartment/house for longer than a year.  That hasn’t happened since 2007.

From Mom in Carbondale, Illinois:

Oh yes.  Unfinished…untouched since December 2010 – yes indeedy.  But the nice thing about this challenge?  I might actually pick them back up.

From me in Minneapolis, Minnesota:

There always more books to be read than time! When I was working at Barnes & Noble I picked up a ton of books for very little money, and I’ve slowly been catching up since I left in 2010. Of course I’m always getting more books from holidays, paperbackswap.com, Half-Price Books, and then there’s whatever new book du jour is on my Must Read Now list.

Cross-Country Connections: Downtown

Every week we choose a different theme and then take or contribute a personal photo that fits the theme. This week’s theme is Downtown.

From me in Minneapolis, Minnesota:

Downtown Minneapolis from the beautiful Martin Olav Sabo bike bridge in south Minneapolis.

From Erin in Bellingham, Washington:

Ah, the power of neon lights to make any surroundings look much more exciting and busy than they ever actually are. Bellingham Herald building in downtown Bellingham.

From Mom in Carbondale, Illinois:

For Bellingham and Minneapolis when one says downtown, a picture immediately comes to the resident.  Downtown is not usually associated with The City of Carbondale, especially when one looks to the OED for a proper definition:  in or towards the centre of a city, especially its main business area.  That said, in this block of “The Strip”  one can find a (albeit struggling) entertainment venue, the “hub” of mass transportation (3 trains daily!) 2 bike shops and a dive bar.  And since the next block holds City Hall – I guess we have us a downtown.

Cross-Country Connections: Mess

Cross-Country Connections is a Biodork weekly blog entry dedicated to telling stories in pictures of three family members – me, my sister and Mom – living in very different locations across the country. Every week we choose a different theme and then take or contribute a personal photo that fits the theme. This week’s theme is Mess.

From Mom in Carbondale, Illinois:

My garage is even messier than it looks. I was planning on going out to Bellingham for a long weekend but now I’m wondering if I should just spend the money and bring Erin out here to help clean vist with me.

From Erin in Bellingham, Washington:

It snowed about 5 inches out here on the west coast on Monday. Since it snows about once a year, the city of Bellingham doesn’t have real snow plows but just 4 plow attachments to hook up to a regular pickup truck. Plus, we’re environmentally safe so they also don’t use any salt. I live on hill with a 20% grade, so that was fun. Thankfully, it warmed up to 40 degrees and rained all day and night Friday, so our mess is all washed away. That’s about enough winter for us out here!

From me in Minneapolis, Minnesota:

Slush: What happens when pristine, white, downy snow gets muddy and half-melted into yuck. Although for this time of year and this part of the country, this is not nearly as messy as it could be!

From me in Minneapolis, Minnesota:

The year-round bicyclists in Minneapolis are some of the most intrepid people around. They ride in all conditions and all seasons, and they both have and know the laws in place that protect their right to ride safely around the city. This image is from last winter’s “Snowpacolypse”.

From Erin in Bellingham, Washington:

So this says a lot about me. An intrepid move for me is attempting a new recipe involving miso paste, rice vinegar, ginger and various other ingredients that I don’t often see in my kitchen.  It turned out fabulous! Salmon with miso-carrot sauce.

From Mom in Carbondale, Illinois:

This is one of my favorite pictures of my travels.  I felt really very intrepid.  It was a Globus Tour and I was pretty much on my own in Florence.  This is at the Ponto Vecchio (Old Bridge) right in the center of the old part of the city.  If I remember correctly a very nice man from London took the picture for me.

This week is a little bit different. First – it’s late. Last Friday the Hubby and I left on holiday and didn’t get home until Tuesday. I started editting photos yesterday, and finally have my #$%@ together for CCC today.

This year we drove down to Woodstock, Illinois for the third annual Christmas Gathering At Aunt Leigh’s House. Aunt Leigh has a beautiful house with lots of rooms – enough to put up 14 of us on our busiest night!

Second, Mom, Erin and I didn’t take photos. Instead, we had the Hubby take a group photo of the three of us. We brought the CCC gang to one living room in a completely new location.

From Mom, me and Erin in Woodstock, Illinois:

Mom, me and Erin in front of the Christmas tree in Aunt Leigh’s living room.

And one more bonus shot. I was pleased to have remembered my tripod (I’d be more pleased if I hadn’t forgotten it in Woodstock when we came home to Minneapolis). We were able to take a group shot of everyone who made it to Christmas this year.

First Row: Aunt Leigh, Cousin Haley, Uncle-in-Law Greg, Cousin Sidney, Aunt Diane, Grandma Betty, Mom
Second Row: Me, the Hubby Aaron, Brother-in-Law Ralph, Sister Erin

Leigh, Haley and Greg live in Woodstock. Sidney and Diane came up from Springfield, Illinois. Grandma Betty is from Vienna, Illinois. Mom is from Carbondale, Illinois. Me and the Hubby are from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Ralph and Erin are from Bellingham, Washington.

Hooray for family, and for making these Cross-Country Connections in person.

Happy Holidays.

From me in Minneapolis:

All done with the shopping! AND the wrapping! There are approximately 100 presents on this table for 25 receipients of four different holiday celebrations. *collapsing in exhaustion*

From Mom in Carbondale, Illinois:

Holiday prep is the best part of Christmas for the kittehs.

From Erin in Bellingham, Washington:
