Why are YouTube comments disabled?

Every episode of The Atheist Experience that appears on YouTube should have a direct link to a corresponding open thread on this blog. Viewers are welcome to post their comments there.

To put it simply, we moderate comments that are directly attached to items that bear the show’s name. You can read the moderation policy for this blog here. Past experience has shown that unmoderated comments — especially comments on YouTube — tend to degenerate into an unpleasant mix of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind.

Being an all-volunteer effort, our ability to keep an eye on comments across multiple platforms is somewhat limited, and YouTube comments have traditionally had a very low signal-to-noise ratio. This environment often winds up chasing away the more reasonable contributors. As a general policy we do not block commenters here simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view.

If having a free-for-all comment area is important to you, you’re welcome to create your own, unofficial discussion group about the show.
