Some recent and future Russell related events

As I mentioned on the show, I’ll be doing a talk in Abilene next month. Here are the details I have so far. The event is being hosted by the Abilene Atheist Alliance. It will happen on Saturday, July 26, at 1:30 PM. It will take place at the Abilene Public Library Auditorium located at 202 Cedar St., Abilene TX, 79601. The room can seat up to 140 people, Christians are expected to show up, so your presence is welcome and appreciated.

Last night I followed in Martin’s footsteps and appeared on the new video chat show, Atheist Analysis. We had fun despite some early problems centered around me having an extra window open like a fool. :)

Before doing Atheist Analysis, I also did some Twitch streaming. What I really wanted to do was make myself finish watching the debate between Matt and Sye, so I picked Diablo 3: Reaper Of Souls as a game that doesn’t require much thinking, and streamed myself playing while watching and commenting on this video. I had a lot of fun, got a pretty good audience chatting about the experience, and encouraged people to tweet with hashtag #ReaperOfSyes. A couple actually did, but it was mainly a joke.

It’s split up into three videos because of the way that it’s recorded, but I may jam them together into one big YouTube movie later. Unfortunately if you want to actually watch the game, you will have to skip to the third video. A glitch caused the video screen to stay locked on a menu for some reason, so it looks incorrectly as if I’m just clicking on static buttons for 40 minutes. But the Sye video and my talking head are fine, so feel free to go throw the whole thing if you just want an alternate take on the debate.

Copyright change for The Atheist Experience

Hi everyone,

Last month I posted about some concerns over the duplication of episodes of The Atheist Experience. As I mentioned in that post, up until now we have been using the license Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0. This has effectively allowed various channels on YouTube to become unofficial hosts of new shows, in their entirety, every week.

After extensive discussions among the board of directors at the Atheist Community of Austin, we will be changing the copyright terms going forward. Past shows remain under the Creative Commons license and may be reproduced in full, as long as the license terms are posted, and there is a prominent link to the show’s website. However, new episodes of The Atheist Experience, beginning with the episode on 12/15/2013, are posted as “All Rights Reserved” and may not be reproduced in full without permission.

Having said that, we’ve always appreciated fans posting their favorite clips on YouTube, and we’d like to give as broad permission as possible for that kind of activity to continue. So to make this clear:

The Atheist Experience hereby grants permission to copy clips, up to ten minutes in length, for non-commercial purposes only. Up to two clips per episode may be copied on any one channel.

If you’d like to copy a longer clip, or more clips from one episode, all you have to do is write to tv@atheist-community.org and ask for permission. We’ll probably say yes. It’s that simple!

Thanks.

All about YouTube channels

Many of you have been asking about a dispute that has arisen between The Atheist Experience crew and a YouTube channel owner named Steve Mills. I’d like to take a moment to clear up what happened and why the contention came up.

First, just to get this out of the way: Yes, I did send Steve a letter, under the official Atheist Experience channel account, asking him to stop reposting entire episodes of the show. This was after multiple attempts to get in touch with him in a much friendlier context, and after he’d closed off various methods of communication, and Jen Peeples (one of our cohosts, and the current president of the Atheist Community of Austin) had received some ugly messages when she tried to post the requests in his comments sections. In short, I brought up a copyright violation, only after other means of getting in touch had clearly failed.

Bat cruise coming

I guess it’s for real now, since PZ Myers mentioned his upcoming appearance in Austin. There are still spots available on the boat now, and it’s coming up in just three weeks, so get moving! You can read about the event and purchase tickets here.

Update:  The lecture begins at 3 PM on Saturday, September 28. It is at Trinity United Methodist Church, at 40th and Speedway. The address is 4001 Speedway. I would assume locals are welcome to attend even if they are not going to be joining us on the cruise.

Update 2: The ACA Freethought Library will be having an open house from noon to 2. The address is 1507 W Koenig Ln.

So the schedule is:

  • 12-2: Open house
  • 3-5 (?): Lecture
  • 6-8: Cruise

Open thread on FtBCon panel: Evangelical Atheism

In a few hours I’ll be joined by radio veteran Jamila Bey and “Quiverfull” survivor Vyckie Garrison, to discuss being an “out” atheist an winning arguments with various types of people. Hope you’ll tune in.

I’ll also post open threads on this blog later today about Beth Presswood’s panel, “God is Love?” and the video game panels today and tomorrow that will be attended by me and Lynnea, respectively. See you there!

Here’s a quick outline of my section of the talk (subject to being abridged if there’s a lot of back-and forth conversation):

  1. Introductions
  2. Why should atheists evangelize?
  3. Does it even work?
  4. On “Playing to win”
  5. Approaching people you know, or: On being a dick
  6. Identifying your audience
  7. Sources of information

Vyckie Garrison will take on the REALLY hard stuff: how to talk to fundamentalists.
