And he also is following Russell on Twitter…

I think a lot of us have the same reaction when we first stumble upon Matt and the show.

I felt exactly the same way when I first discovered TAE!

Now he only has something like 400 full episodes to catch up on.

and then all the non-prophets and the godless bitches…. I found TAE late last year and I’m still working my way through it all.

        ai can haz moer NPR?

I guess all great things must end. Vanity of vanities, all is vanity…

        1. Lord Narf

They’ll probably pick it back up in another year or two, when they have things sorted out with the main show transition.

I’m free, if you need another voice on the show, for gorilla episodes, Russel … if you don’t mind my horribly dorky voice. I even have a professional quality condenser mic hooked up to my computer. :D

Uh-oh. That lil’ TV station in Austin is gonna get swamped with callers now. If the technology had problems BEFORE…

I was lucky and I found TAE and the non-prophets when I was 17. It was really fundamental in my development and my understanding of logic and making arguments.

On top of that, I found PZ through references to him on TAE. Then through PZ I found Ed and a bunch of other old Sciblogs folks.

More than a bit awesome and well deserved. Yes, I felt the same way, like E-Gads, this Matt fellah really knows how to present our sde of this argument, and in a way that makes even the most brilliant apologist stumble. Here’s to hopin’ TAE gets even more acclaim!

Heh heh heh heh heh. Nice. Has Matt stopped giggling like a school-girl, yet?

    So…

Ahhhh Yeah! That is a pretty sweet comp for Matt! Granted all of us that followed TAE knew this but it is still nice to hear that reaction from other Atheists.

Is that the publicity train I hear rolling into the station?

Seriously though, this is pretty cool. Maybe someone should tell him about Theoretical Bullshit too in case he hasn’t heard of him!

(Not to say TAE or Matt aren’t good, it’s just that TB takes intellect to another dimension).

I just watched theoreticalbullshit’s series on his back and forth with WLC. I was appalled at how dishonest WLC was in his response. It is utterly incomprehensible to me that people follow WLC at all. I have watched a number of his debates, and, sadly, they are no better than the disgusting display during this conversation. What WLC’s most glaring fault is, is that he clearly and unabashedly erects straw-man arguments of every contention of whoever he is debating. The only way anyone with any intellectual integrity can possibly find his arguments compelling in any way is if they are unclear about what logical fallacies are. I suppose that there are 2 reasons why he is considered the leading christian apologist of our day.

1)his audience doesn’t know what logical fallacies are, and/or how to apply them to an argument

2)he is making so much money, he has no issue lying outright to keep making money on the people from #1

My favorite part is when WLC finally gets down to the bottom of some argument or another (I have seen many so cannot remember which) and he outright states that the only way an existent being can know of a metaphysical property (read god) is thru intuition. Please, read that last sentence again. He has just boiled down every argument for the existence of god to human intuition. Because human intuition is never wrong . . . right.

          1. Alicia

WIlliam impresses the masses with smoke and miror, word salad mumbo jumbo. Remember, it has been shown that a large number of the faithful are poor and undereducated. They probably get all impressed-like when *air quotes* “Dr. Craig” spits his nonsense. Odd too, since they tend consider us pretentious when we actually use true and and tested intellectual arguments.

          2. Lord Narf

Because human intuition is never wrong . . . right.

He flat out says, in several of his books, that evidence and reason can’t come to correct conclusions, and the only way to know God is through faith, which is granted to us by the holy spirit. There’s some bullshit verbiage about how humans are fallible, but God is infallible … because those who made him up said he was … except that if you read the Bible, He displays none of the omnis.

He, like almost every other Christian out there, can’t seem to grasp that asserting infallibility along any point of a revelatory chain is worthless, if the last link of the chain isn’t infallible.

          3. Raymond

            @Lord Narf

People of faith routinely illustrate their knowledge of this concept. Just like you and me, they live their lives by it. People reject claims that come to them 2nd or 3rd hand all the time because they cannot trust that the person telling them has gotten it right. But somehow when god enters the picture all the rules get thrown out the window. This is what frustrates me no end. Why are believers so lazy when it comes to their belief in god, when they are so skeptical about things like what movie to watch or where to eat? One of these things is important, the other two almost completely irrelevant.

      2. Heir Apparent

Enjoy his channel. I think you’ll find it quite engaging. I have to pause his videos about once every 20 seconds or more to look up words though :P

        1. Hairy Chris, blah blah blah etc

His evisceration of William Lane Craig is a thing of beauty.

Narf Love yah man–he is AWESOME!

          1. Lord Narf

You’re welcome. I find Steve’s commentaries a good way to get the material covered by the apologetics books without the pain of having to read through them without the snark. Reading an apologetics book plain is just so freaking painful. Too much stupid in one burst.

          2. Alicia

I feel yah on that one. I have tried, Zues knows I have, but I’d quickly get to a point in the book where the theist makes some odd ball assertion stated as an absolute fact and I would just roll my eyes and stop reading. Perhaps, as I get older, my propensity to suffer fools lightly diminishes. Yeas, guys like Steve are so needed. Amusing, the self martydom of the theist commenters though–e’gads…One was saying atheists were narrow minded cause we refuse to accept his faith while we continue to grasp our own faith in evolution. This is the very definition of narrow mindedness, he declares. I countered by telling him that if said I had a red object and he claimed it was blue that I was not being narrow minded at all for calling him out on his ignorance…

          3. Lord Narf

Part of the problem is that they often set up the most stupid false-dichotomies in the first chapter or two, and then they build upon that false dichotomy for the rest of the book. A lot of that runs through Steve’s videos, that when the author restates the false dichotomy as support for something, for the 50th time in 5 chapters, Steve has to repeat, “… which we’ve already established is not the case, and there are many more likely scenarios.”

      Martin Wagner

It’s unlikely we’d ever get to have him in the studio, though it’s not out of the question that he might call in if he really does love the show as much as he says. But he doesn’t owe us anything, and if he did it it would be his choice to make. The attention he’s already bringing our way is most appreciated as it is.

      1. Lord Narf

Oh hell yeah. How many people follow him on Twitter again? That’s a lot of attention brought in a week or two, I’m sure.

        1. Alicia

*starts dancing with everybody in the thread* How cool is this? My Fervent hope…TAE’s message spreads like a wildfire and really starts amping up in voltage…I mean, HOW COOL IS THAT??? The TAE folks just gotta promise that they won’t go all Hollywood on us when they get famous…lol

        2. changerofbits

How many people follow him on Twitter again?

4.6 Million. Would need something akin to the Drake equation to work out how many new viewers TAE will end up getting, but that’s still a bunch of potential eyes.

          1. Lord Narf

            *blink*

Holy crap. I knew it was high, but I didn’t think it was that high.

      2. Alicia

Oh, to be sure and I am certain with such a busy schedule it could be near impossible even to just call in — still — dare to dream :-)

      * @Matt_Dillahunty I really can’t express how impressed I am with you and your show. Fantastic work.

Congrats Matt, very well-deserved. It seems that Matt gets a lot of the AE fangirl/boying, and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate all of the cast and crew of the show and podcasts! I love Jen’s calm rebuttals of nonsense and Traci’s well-reasoned critiques, Russel’s passionate rants and John Dee’s sarcastic quips. I am in awe of the crew’s ability to get the show out nearly every week, despite endless technical problems with what seems to be an entire Public Access Studio which is possessed against them. And I love the Nonprophets and Godless Bitches, with Denis Loubet’s dulcet tones, and Beth’s wry, sharp skewering of religious pomposity and hypocrisy. Sorry for anyone I’ve left out, I love you all! Please don’t stop doing what you do!

AMEN (except I’d make it Jeff Dee’s passionate rants and Russell‘s sarcastic quips)

      1. kestra

Dangle. There’s me, confusing Elizabeth I’s court astrologer/magician with an Atheist Experience host. Happens the everyone, right?

Don’t forget Don! Love his bluntness and laugh.

      1. kestra

Augh, and I forgot Martin as well! Sorry Martin, you are also a great host, and thanks for all the work you do on the blog.

        1. Lord Narf

Heh, the guy is the one who brought this to our attention, and you just leave him out. :D

        2. Alicia

Martin and Tracy are among my faves, and my curmurdgeon hubby’s although he at loathe to admit it. You know you got it going on when a staunch Diest becomes a fan of certain TAE pundits…

      2. Houndentenor

I like all the hosts. I miss Ashley who used to be my favorite, but all of them do a great job and a lot better job than I’d do. (I haven’t had nearly enough philosophy training to unpack some of the arguments that people come up with.) It’s good to have so deep a talent pool for this show.

    3. 20.3
      Alicia

*standing…slow clap* YES! I concur I love them all so much, this cast is SO well rounded–I couldn’t hand pick a better line up…And yes, yes I am a fan girl (not the kind of fangirl that would flash mah boobies or anything, but the kind that would perhaps ask for an autograph if I met the team live and personal like) Shoots, if I had to be a fan of something I’d rather it be TAE and not BEIBER for crying out loud….

  21. 21
    stubby

Wow that is cool. I wonder if Ricky Gervais would shave his head to play Matt in the TAE movie. I think Matthew Modine should be Don and a young Bob Newhart could play Martin.

    1. 21.1
      Lord Narf

… and a young Bob Newhart could play Martin.

Err, I’m not sure they have the budget for a time machine …

      1. Vall

They could CGI him in there, like Forrest Gump. I would switch Matthew Modine for Matthew McConauheaaay.

        1. Lord Narf

True. Or what they did with Jeff Bridges, in the new TRON movie. Although, the CGI Jeff Bridges was a little on the stiff side.

      2. Russell Glasser

I feel like having Martin play himself would be cheaper than CGI? Maybe?

        1. Lord Narf

Yeah, but what’s the fun in that?

        2. Vall

Maybe you could get that guy that did the Hepcats stuff. I think he looks like Martin.

        3. Alicia

Pfffft, realism in cinema? That would never fly in Hollywood!

Instead of a mockumentary about an Office, perhaps Gervais will do one about a public access call-in show??
