I’m debating in Georgia – Nov. 17th

The debate will be live-streamed at: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/humanist

Here’s part of the press release:

GOOD WITHOUT GOD? LIVE DEBATE.

Matt Dillahunty from The Atheist Experience
To debate
Mark Allison from Covenant Connections Church

The South is full of people who believe that to be good you must have God. The

Gainesville State College Secular Student Alliance disagrees with that statement.

The Secular Student Alliance has arranged a debate between Matt Dillahunty,

atheist, and Mark Allison, Christian, on the topic of Good Without God. There

will be 5 questions presented by the moderator then time for questions from the

audience. The debate will be held on Thursday November 17th at 7:00PM. The

debate will be held on the Gainesville State College Campus in the Academic IV

building, on the 3rd floor in the multi-purpose room.

1.)    Are you a scientist?

I personally am not.

2.)    Do you speak, write, or translate Hebrew, or Greek?

I have in the past learned to read some Hebrew, but never fluently.

3.)    Are you a parent?

I am.

Below are my reasons for asking these questions

1.)    If you are not a scientist, then in fact you must take the word of someone you have never met, and use it as evidence for your case. Guess who else does that? That’s right Christians do that every day.

Let’s talk a little bit about the philosophy of science.

Raising Atheists, part 2

It’s been a few months since I wrote about atheist parenting.  In response to that post, I think one concern stands out more clearly than everything else.  I’ll introduce it with excerpts from more emails we got recently:

I’d like to hear about how atheist parents combat attempts at faith indoctrination on their children from family and community.  I know that eventually my son will have to decide for himself what he believes, but I’d like to give him the best chance at landing on a reality based on logic and evidence.
