Some quick good news: da Feds have captured Warren Jeffs, the fugitive leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints, a polygamist offshoot of the mainstream Mormon church. Jeffs is, naturally, playing the “religious persecution” card. Of course it’s persecution to object to the idea of 50+ year old men swapping around barely pubescent girls as sex toys. Check the comprehensive listing of articles about the activities of Jeffs and his disciples over at Rick Ross’s cult-watchdog site.

I recently finished reading Under the Banner of Heaven and recommend it highly as I recommend all of Krakauer’s books. Mormons are wierd but, the fundamentalist mormons are just plain evil and belong in prison.http://www.amazon.com/Under-Banner-Heaven-A/dp/1400032806/sr=8-1/qid=1156893842/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-2403125-5082536?ie=UTF8Amazon.comIn 1984, Ron and Dan Lafferty murdered the wife and infant daughter of their younger brother Allen. The crimes were noteworthy not merely for their brutality but for the brothers’ claim that they were acting on direct orders from God. In Under the Banner of Heaven, Jon Krakauer tells the story of the killers and their crime but also explores the shadowy world of Mormon fundamentalism from which the two emerged. The Mormon Church was founded, in part, on the idea that true believers could speak directly with God.

Under the Banner of Heaven is a great book. So is “Leaving the Saints”. “God’s Brothel” is a horrifying, but intense, look at the underbelly of the LDS Church. As for the fundamentalists like Jeffs, I would recommend reading “The Polygamists” by Benjamine Bisline(?). I’m so glad that Jeffs got nailed!! I hope they put him in a cell with a 250lb, gay, Vegas Loan Shark. Although, I’ve heard that Jeffs is into that kind of stuff.
