Is Atheist Money Tainted?

American Cancer Society tosses away an easy quarter million

Todd Stiefel, through his Stiefel Freethought Foundation, wanted to help fight cancer. His goal was to support up to 100 teams for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life under the banner of “Foundation Beyond Belief”. Furthermore, his family had promised to match funds raised by the teams to the tune of $250,000. The ACS promptly responded to this laudable act of charity by declining to aid his teams with logistical support.

Mr. Stiefel alleges that the reason behind the ACS refusal to support his foundation’s teams was because they are godless. The ACS, of course, has a different viewpoint; his foundation does not fit a new policy that only provides organizational support for national teams from corporations. Mr. Stiefel promptly retorted that his foundation is a corporation. Yet the ACS continued to withhold support for this attempted act of atheist philanthropy.

“Similar groups are being offered recognition as national team partners that we are being denied. That is unfair and that is the crux of why I am upset. Further, the $250,000 matching challenge we have offered has been ignored and rejected. That hurts more than you can know. I was trying hard to do something wonderful. Instead, my efforts have been frustrated by inequity.” – Open Letter to ACS [Read more...]

Prove Conservapedia Wrong…With Your Wallet

Not that it is ever to prove them wrong on anything

You, as a dirty atheist, are not charitable!

So you can do two things. Either covert to a religion of your choosing and cough up some cash for the collection plate OR you could click on the donors choose contribution thingy on the right side of my page and help contribute to the education of some students. You decide!

CNN on the Religiosity of American Politicians

Brian T. Kaylor discusses God’s encroachment on Politics

Over at CNN’s Belief Blog, contributor Brian Kaylor has written a short opinion piece on the increasing religious rhetoric in American political elections and the many negative side effects of when zealous, empty and pointless assertions of Christian in-group loyalty take the foreground and relegates the much more substantive discussions on policy to the far corners of the debate..  if policy is even discussed at all. One paragraph in particular struck me in two ways.

While debate moderators and election commentators focus on economic issues, the religious rhetoric of the presidential candidates appears to go mostly unnoticed – except by the key Republican voting bloc being courted. After being a Republican, the best predictor of someone being a Tea Party supporter is whether a person has a desire to see religion significantly impact politics. – Brian Kaylor

First, unnoticed? Umm hello? Don’t discount us widdle wascally Atheists. Rampant and pointless god talk is one of my guiltiest pleasures, seeing people doing so much in the name of a [in all probability] non-existent god is priceless.

Secondly, the hijacking of the Tea Party by the pious fundies should come as no surprise to anybody. But maybe that revelation will finally get some of my less religiously inclined family members to abandon the movement that has since been hijacked by the religious right and a whole mess of corporate interests.

Chaplain’s Assistant Arrested for Trying to Bang Little Boys

Army Sergeant Jonathan McGeoch has been arrested after he allegedly used facebook to meet two underage boys for the purpose of sexual contact. As Rock Beyond Belief points out, “this doesn’t mean that we can draw conclusions about the scale, scope, frequency of this type of crime among the Chaplaincy.” But it does strike me with same sense of schadenfreuden as all the sexual misadventures of religious figures in western society do, be it having gay sex while publically demonizing homosexuality, diddling little kids, or worse.

In my ignorant opinion, saying that you speak for god can lead some people skipping down the road towards a full blown god-complex, no doubt those people would be the same scumbags even if they were secular but, I feel that some people can used twisted logic to tell themselves that their imaginary friend really wants them to commit that immoral action, perhaps being the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I am proud that the Army is fully cooperating with local authorities on this case, as it does with the grand majority of sexual crimes. It’s great that we caught this event before it destroyed the lives of two innocents and hopefully no other child has been harmed by Sgt. McGeoch.

Also, and completely unrelated to child rape, as I was catching up on my reading on Rock Beyond Belief, and because FTB is not accessible on army-net, I was disheartened to learn that one of my fellow FreeThoughtBlog-ians(??) that had been initially scheduled to speak, BlagHag, won’t be able to attend (QQ). I have scheduled my leave in hopes of being able to attend the event and had hoped to meet yet another of my fellow bloggers in the world of 3D-land. But since RBB has been rescheduled so many times during it’s “rocky” gestation, she had a schedule conflict with another conference. I guess I will just have to settle with listening to Ed, Al, and the rest of team godless. I’ll see you all there if the leave fairy decides to grace me with a plane ticket, I’ll be the ridiculously tall dude with the pink mohawk.

(By the way Andrew, I know you read this blog and if I am able to go I will be crashing at your place since you live on post, thanks in advance).

The Blaze vs. Al Stefanelli

Missed this one when I was moving about Iraq, but it still deserves a mention.

It should come as no surprise that the individuals who abide by fundamentalist Christian and radical Islamic doctrines would be the first to cry out that they are being persecuted when their dangerous, damaging and disingenuous beliefs come under attack. Most of these people lack the maturity and intelligence to act in a socially acceptable manner.  Many of them are sociopaths and quite a good number of them are psychopaths.  All of them are clearly delusional. – Al Stefanelli

Boy o Boy, you were right, Al. In response to Al Stefanelli’s “explosive” blog post, The Blaze went full steam ahead on the batshit-mobile. Their article is so disingenuous that it made me almost swallow my chuck of skoal in disbelief. The same website that was so careful to later parse the booing of Steven Hill in my last post showed no such distinction when it came to distorting Al’s words. Even the byline was a piece of work “they want us to die”, trying to stir up hate against atheists when the line was taken from Mr. Stefanelli’s blog who used it to express the sentiments of fundamentalists. Such a dishonest tactic almost gives me a feeling of respect for The Blaze, it is such a pure unfiltered piece of work that I have to begrudgingly appreciate the hate filled balls on the author, Billy Hallowell.

Mr. Hallowell’s article is exactly the reaction expected as laid out by Mr. Stefanelli. First, The Blaze does everything it can to distance itself from Islam.

In the post, Al Stefanelli, American Atheists’ Georgia State Director, makes a bizarre connection between radical Muslims and Christians. In speaking about “fundamentalist Christian and radical Islamic doctrines,“ Stefanelli says that both are ”dangerous, damaging and disingenuous.” Throughout the blog post, he continues to create ties between these two groups, but declines to truly define them.

Certainly some would agree that Islamic extremists (and perhaps fringe Christian believers) are sociopaths or psychopaths, but Stefanelli’s comments are so vague it’s impossible to discern who the targets of his rage truly are. Without a clear definition of who, exactly, he’s referring to, one’s mind runs wild with wonderment. – Billy Hallowell, The Blaze.

Truly define? If you are an outside observer of both social groups it is easy. Both push similar tenants in support of different flavors of Yahweh, the only difference is that most fundamentalist Christians are ensconced in a society that limits the vast majority of their hate filled ideas from being implemented via violence in the real world by secular law and order and a society of tolerance while most radical Islamists are not.

Mr. Hallowell hides behind that fact, but Mr. Stefanelli was not linking the problem of fundamentalist Christians to violence but, merely points out that actions that would get you arrested for doing (i.e. blatant hate speech) becomes socially acceptable if you add the words “God said so”, you magically are now blameless through the passive acceptance of religious moderates. The Decline of Religion in America According to the Blaze

An article on The Blaze warns of the decline of religion in America. Being a master at propaganda as a peons of usually are at Mr. Beck’s site, the author refers to religiosity as ‘religious health’, implying that it is unhealthy to be non religious, a meme that I love. Why the article does get the general point of the study (conducted by the right) nailed down, it glosses over a few of the more interesting concepts. The two that stuck me as important were:

Aging memberships – The internet generation is much more godless, despite increasing efforts of churches to take advantage of technology.

and

Continuing High Levels of Conflict – Problems in the church and declining membership/revenues

While it is always informative to know how the right thinks about itself for education’s sake, the absolute BEST part about any blaze article are the comments, I have included some of my favorites.

Catholics don’t read the bible apparently

Every modern social concern is addressed in the Holy Bible. Catholics and Socialist attempts to avoid righteous discussions.

Wat? A Blaze reader’s prospective on atheism

I’ve noticed there are two kinds of Atheists. Atheist #1 Doesn’t believe in any kind of organized religion or deity(s), but yet respects those that do and so never argues about it.

Atheist #2, on the other hand, trashes all religions, (especially Christians) does everything in their power to mask religious phrases/items through either the courts, desecration, intimidation, or outright vandalism, and will try to “convert” others away from faith. (i.e. billboards, advertisements, fliers etc.)

Seems to me that #2 hides behind the term “atheism” in order to mask their own religion.

The Blaze, how I love thee.

Calling All Foxhole Atheists…For a Survey

From MAAF (MilitaryAtheists.org)

The Center for Atheist Research is distributing a survey to all willing current and veteran foxhole atheists. The survey is intended to collect date for the creation of a secular ethics and mental health needs program (Atheist Chaplains) and test the validity of the feared “Spiritual Fitness” assessment; where if you (like I did) answer the questions truthfully, you could be subjected to written counseling and corrective training.

In October 2009, the Army began measuring the “spiritual fitness” of troops with the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness (CSF) program’s Global Assessment Tool.  This Tool is an online survey that asks a series of multiple-choice questions about a person’s well-being.

The Center for Atheist Research (atheistresearch.org) is conducting an online research study on the validity of this “spiritual fitness” Tool, and on the secular/spiritual well-being of U.S. Military Personnel and Veterans.

If you are a member or veteran of the U.S. Military, you are invited to participate in this survey study, which has been approved by the University of Tampa Institutional Review Board.

To participate in, or learn more about, this survey please visit:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/militaryspiritualfitness

If you would like to speak with the principal investigator, Dr. Ryan Cragun, about this survey, please contact him at rcragun@ut.edu.

Thank you again for your consideration.

Ryan T. Cragun, Ph.D.

Joseph H. Hammer, M.Ed.

Karen Hwang, Ed.D.

The Survey took me about 20 minutes to complete, and it will help make the case to trash the Spiritual Fitness test if we come to court armed with statically significant evidence which will show that the decent moral, atheists should not be subject to remedial training in which the Chaplin will wax on and on about how Jesus saved him and he can save them too, with more than a little implication of hellfire for the unbeliever.

Sean Hannity is a Liar, Ann Coulter is an IDiot, and Other Predictable One Liners

Sean “Earmuffs” Hannity must hate Media Matters, I mean fuck those nerds; sitting at home compiling cold hard facts to refute his emotional assertions. Judging by his behavior, I assume he is at least as narcissistic and egomaniacal as I am and I sure as Hades would be fuming if I was in his shoes.

Today’s lie was asserting that Austin Goolsbee was incorrect in his assessment of American job growth.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE, FORMER OBAMA ADVISOR: Over the 17 months, wait take the 17 months where we’re actually growing fairly robustly -

HANNITY: Growing? We’re losing 400,000 jobs a month!

GOOLSBEE: Before the events at the beginning of this year –

HANNITY: We’re losing –

GOOLSBEE: We added 2.5 million, we added 2.5 million jobs. When the president [took] office, we’re losing almost 800,000 a month. When we slow that down and turn it around, we add 2.5 million. It has taken longer than we anticipated, there’s no question about that, you’re correct.

Mr. Goolsbee’s sources: The Bureau of Labor Statistics and Department of Labor. Mr. Hannity’s source his gut, a case study of truthiness in practice.

Ann Coulter has picked up the Anti-Science banner of the willfully ignorant +2 and has started ranting about how evolution is clearly a liberal lie. She falls back on old creationist memes, irreducible complexity, quotes Behe, and implies that Evolution is pushed because of the requirement of a ‘liberal creation myth’. While simultaneously recruiting Galileo to her side and asserting Modern science has disproved evolution. When you think about the contempt Coulter must have for humanity, you heart has to ache. Because for her to be right, all biological and medical scientists the world over must be engaged in a Herculean effort of deception. I on the other hand don’t assume that the majority of our fellow humans so morally lacking as to lie constantly, but I don’t watch a lot of Fox. Yet what can you really expect from Coulter; she has a degree in Law, so arguments for arguments sake is her bread and butter; facts need not apply.

PZ has already covered her completely erroneous concept of microbiology, but one should never pass up an opportunity to point out that both these assholes are so smug, they smell their own farts. That and I really don’t think a lack of a creation story would bother me as Atheist, their side is the one that requires creation; I am satisfied in my knowledge that the things I don’t know far exceed what I could possibly hope to comprehend in a million lifetimes yet, I CAN say with some degree of certainty that both of these people are filled to the brim with bullshit.

Foxhole Atheists get Intra Military Coverage

Most Americans will gladly say “we support our troops,” free drinks in airport bars are common, as is the occasional random “thank you for your service.” The American military is unique compared to other, perhaps more laudable, government jobs such as teaching, being that the massive majority respects the military institutions. American Soldiers are considered to be representatives of American society where the common core moral values of the nation are put to the test under the most adverse and cruel conditions imaginable. And you bet your ass we are, we are the mirror that America looks in, a constant reflection of change.

Social groups have learned from the African-American military story, post WWII, that even the most strident bigot may change his tune when his life is on the line. The ties of a common enemy, a common language, and a common society; not to mention just having another trigger puller in a pinch are strong motivators for cooperation.  Soldiers learn to be friends, regardless of creed, orientation, or color and once those Soldiers ETS from the military; they take those life lessons back home. It was hard for my grandfather who served in the Pacific to return to the small Texas town where he witnessed lynchings as a kid. He was disgusted when faced with the old racism of Hicksville, USA and soon moved to the city.

Today, the struggle for acceptance is fought by atheists and homosexuals who, by striving for lasting recognition in the military, sow the seeds of a concrete place in the accepted American zeitgeist. So, as I got mortared during breakfast, I was pleasantly surprised to see not one but, two articles on Atheism in my Stars and Stripes. The 4 page spread was enough to send my favorite Mormon FUN-damentalist into a 5 minute rant about how the godless are evil and that how we are the servants of President Obama and his socialist plans. Which was stupid on so many levels, I was unable to respond.

Go Team Godless.
