OP Brown

A silent night.

I just got done with sitting on a ridge line for 2 days. We sat on a windy ridge, huddling together against the bitter wind and whipping snow. We watched as artillery rounds rained down in the valley before us. Night fell. We attached our night vision goggles to our helmets. I flicked my monocle on and beheld my surrounding. For a brief minute, I didn’t feel the wind or the cold. My bleeding lips and swollen knee didn’t matter. For through the goggles, I beheld the stars. Those stars that are too dim to see with the naked eye glowed before me.  It was, as they say, a mind-gasm.

Science really did save my “soul”.

I can’t remember how many times I’ve watched that movie, but it still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. Beautiful.

If you are on youtube, you should definitely see the rest of Philhellenes’ videos.

Beautiful. I recall, during my days in the United Kingdom TA (part-time volunteer reserves,) using a starlight scope to watch a pair of hedgehogs making baby hedgehogs in a forest in Germany.

I had the same experience camping in Arkansas once. You really can’t process the Milky Way unless you’re somewhere WAY out of city lights.

In 2004 the Hubble telescope was aimed at an apparently empty bit of sky 3 arc minutes in diameter (1/10 the size of the full Moon) and the CCDs were exposed for about a million seconds (around 13 days). The Hubble Ultra Deep Field has about 10,000 objects in it. Most of these objects are distant galaxies. The furthest object located as of 2011 was a galaxy seen at a time of 600 million years after the Big Bang.

Folks, human beings are not the center of the universe.

Science also provided the high tech weapons that have made it possible to destroy civilization in an afternoon.

If Science gets the credit, it also gets the blame.
