Paradise Valley High School wants signatures? Then FINE we will give them signatures!
Update, the preamble of the petition has been updated:
“I’d like to thank everyone for their support. I never imagined that the petition would gain so much attention. However, this whole situation has been a large misunderstanding between myself and the administration.
I never meant to shed Paradise Valley in a negative light. PV is an accepting community of diverse students and staff. I have met with my principal and this situation has been resolved.
The misunderstanding was completely on my end of things. Again, thank you all for your activism and support.”
So the requirement seems to be a case of miscommunication but, in the end the kids are getting their club, huzzah.
Paradise Valley High School thought they would be tricky. Even though its 100% illegal, the school sought to either block or delay the formation of a Secular Student’s Club by requiring a petition of support. Thankfully the school might just be dumb enough actually underestimate the internet. Silly mortals, Thou doth not know what this series of tubes can do.
Hopefully the school will get the hint. Release the kraken.

It’s possible they won’t recognise the signatures of those who are not students of the school. Not to mention those of us who aren’t even American. But I signed it anyway as the petition didn’t have a filter on it to prevent me. Good luck.

Signed. They may ignore me — I’m from Santa Clara, CA, in the south San Francisco Bay — but I did my best.

I signed. From Canada, but with a .ca domain, I could be from California. Unless it’s just a theory.

Unfortunately, saw this on the petition:
PVHS administration has required SSA’s advocates to acquire signatures of those students who are okay with it’s presence on campus.
Please notice the “it’s” error. Boo.

Who can sign this is not really the point. The school’s action on having a petition in the first place is hands down against the law. I feel if we get a ton a signatures and a few strongly worded letters on the legal situation, we might be able to get the school to back off.

Crommunist has also brought this to PZ’s attention.
Currently, they’ve got 808 signatures and climbing.

Couple of questions… Does the school administration really expect them to try and get more than 5,000 signatures from students of the school? There are only 1,500-1,600 students at that high school. OK.. so only one question.
Their sports teams must get a lot of flack for choosing he name “Trojans.”

Yipppppeeee! I was signer No. 1000!!!! Do I got a door prize for crossing the threshhold just as the odometer was turning over? If I get a choice, I’ll choose to spend some time with 72 Skepchicks in this world, not the non-existent next world … Oh, and it will be strictly for intellectual purposes, indulging in skeptical camaraderie in an academic setting, not any of that Paradise hanky-panky stuff some people expect. … Not that I have ANYTHING against hanky-panky! … And no, no, no, I’m not implying that Skepchicks don’t like hanky-panky or would not be good at it … I mean, I’m sure they would all be great! great! great! at hanky-panky! I just don’t want any, y’know, misunderstandings …
I think I’ll stop writing before I dig this hole too much deeper. It’s getting pretty hot down here and I’m starting to smell sulfur and brimstone coming up through cracks in the bottom.

Signed, and used my old address from the Phoenix area. It’s not PV, but if they try to filter out “outsider” signatures based on address or zip code, I might still slip in… I think I’m overthinking this, though…I seriously doubt they’ll do anything like that.

One way of dealing with these problems is for the school to allow the club, contingent as usual on there being a faculty advisor. Then make it clear to all faculty (in an unofficial unwritten not-clearly-stated way of course) that anyone who agrees to advise the club will be looking at serious job repercussions in the not-too-distant future.
It’s worked before.
