Glen Beck Freaks Out Over South Korean Skyscraper

Because everything in the world must revolve around Beck and the United States, no exceptions.

On my morning drive to work, I put down my book on tape on my trusty Kindle and decided to tune in to the Glen Beck radio show. Amid selling GBTV and yet another stadium public performance, I could tell that the radio host was a bit more touchy than normal. He was pissed and the target was South Korea. His rage was so pure that he was demanding that the U.S. pull all of our troops out of the country immediately. Why? Because one of the S. Korea’s planned skyscrapers made him think of 9/11.

Ok, upon looking at the picture through the permanent lens of an American who watched the event unfold, I can see the resemblance. The building pictured below consists of a pair of WTC’ish towers linked at the middle by a mushrooming collection of shops and penthouse. So yes, it kind of looks the two towers with a tumor connecting them half way up but, the resemblance ends there.

(image from MVRDV)

The towers were never hit, nor fell in a manner that leads me to believe that the design is anything but the end result of architectural or ergonomic calculations to create an open green space high above the hustle and bustle of the streets bellows.

In the same segment, Glen was also attacking the Freedom of Religion Foundation for going after yet another nativity scene on public property in yet another small Texas town. His argument was that if the scene was offensive, atheists should just look away and ignore it. But avoiding double standards is not one of Beck’s strong points.

The demand that we pull out of South Korea is ludicrous from the perspective of the American political machine. The State department has announced that the next century of geo politics will revolve around the Pacific Rim, so no; the American empire is not going to cede a vital strategic location because of a building. The only result so far of this conservative rage was a press release from the backers of the skyscraper which basically said that they didn’t mean to make it look like 9/11 but conceded that it kind of does and offered an apology. They said the design was not intentional or intended to offend but, if the building does inflame Beck’s sensitivities, he could always just choose to ignore it.

Well, he could always fly a plane into it.

  2. says

Actually, to me it looks like the tops of the skyscrapers are emerging from a cloud bank; quite pretty, really.

But then again, I have been spending a lot of time in Skyrim these days, and everything is emerging from clouds.

In my game I’m poised to battle the traitorous town of Whiterun for supporting the Empire, puppet regime of the elves, but my girlfriend is set to put down the Nord rebellion and reunite the Empire in her game.

        It’s awesome.

By the Nine Eight yes, the world of the Elder Scrolls just gets better. Certainly visually.

The funny thing is, if the supernatural were real (as in Old Testament, Quran etc) then our world would look more like Skyrim. Not in the Nordic, snow everywhere sense, but in the conjuring-Fire-Atronach-at-will sense.

        • says

ha! your GF went with the empire? Thats like she picked Darth Vader’s side.

I am getting ready to re-roll a archer, light weapon, sissy, theif for my first serious play though. So far I only dicked around with a few builds to see what fit for me.

          • Pali says

Gotta love how RPers will call it “re-rolling” even in a game that has no rolling during chargen. 😉 I do the exact same thing.

          • Leni says

My archer thief is not a sissy! I can put poison in people’s pants 😀

I’m lying, I didn’t actually bother with the pickpocket tree much, except to get the extra carrying capacity. They’re usually dead long before I get close enough for pant-poisoning. If not, then I just set the pants on fire ^^

Just got it, did the full dark brotherhood quest line before messing with the main quest to get my sneak and bow skills up. Now I am a bit overpowered since if I am ever dectected I can just use the full fire breath shout + werewolf form.

  3. says

I think it looks really cool. Even if it does look like the twin towers, why should it be insulting?

It’s not as pretty as the Nettlebane cave though 😀

  4. says

Actually, The Weekly Standard covered this and linked to a Dutch newspaper where one of the building’s designers DID admit that he thought of 9/11 when designing the building. I think Beck’s anger on this is justified.

    • says

My read was that the designer realized that the building was “9/11ish” during the designing, and didn’t plan to do it from the start. Which wouldonly be the same pattern recognition that so infurated Beck.

    • says

It doesn’t matter whether the designer had the World Trade Center in mind or not. Unless he declares that he was somehow deliberately mocking the events of 9/11 then Beck has no basis for being angry with him — except for the usual reason that Beck is a thin-skinned putz looking for opportunities to take offense.

  5. Eric126 says

It looks like 9/11, and not even abstractly. Also, I bet it’s brilliant architecture. It reopens the wound only if we’ve been scratching too much to let it heal. Beck is a scratching asshat.

  6. says

I think that building(s?) is brilliant. It’s like some space warping vortex settled in at a certain distance from the ground and pushed all the rooms out into the shape of a cloud.(Not an American and the WTC didn’t even occur to me when I saw the pic.)

  7. Mr.Kosta says

Yes, it does remind me of 9/11, but a reasonable person would take it as a tribute, not an insult.

It’s Glenn Beck we’re talking about, mate. “Reasonable” is not the word I’d choose to describe him.

    • docsarvis says

I agree Beck is completely bonkers. He makes Rick Perry sound… OK. Strike that. No one can make Rick Perry sound intelligent. Beck is a Bozo.

  8. F says

I think Beck’s anger on this is justified.

Oh how I wish I were a giant development firm. I’d put ’em up like they were McDonalds.

  9. rukymoss says

Just a little link-following led me to the info that the architects are Dutch, and the project (not just that one building) is under the direction of Studio Daniel Libeskind, whose design won the competiton for- -wait for it– Ground Zero Master Plan, back in 2003. So this is definite proof of a CONSPIRACY!!! (Sorry, my random caps generator is out for repair). Given Dutch and Polish (Libeskind’s birthplace) involvement, we should pull out of NATO, too.

  10. jamessweet says

Seeing the photo of the corner of my eye as I was reading the opening paragraphs and hadn’t scrolled down all the way yet… I thought it was a 9/11 picture.

I could understand finding it offensive. I don’t, but I can understand how someone would. The idea of severing ties with South Korea is just insane, of course; and the irony of Beck in the same segment saying that if one is offended one should just look away, that’s way too rich.

    • Scott says

As an American conservative my first reaction was being startled at the dramatic similarity. I know too many people sadly impacted that day, our family included. However, as the emotions rolled past, and my mind re engaged, it is a fascinating design, creative use of space and as others have suggested, can be viewed as tribute to those we lost that day.

Weren’t there some wingnuts who objected to Part 2 of Lord of the Rings being called “The Two Towers”?

  12. says

Beck: “Waaah, it makes me think of 911! Pull our troops out of South Korea.”

(5 years later, when in its dying gasps the Kim Jong Il regime lanuches an unsuccessful attack on South Korea.)
Beck: “Waaah, we pulled out of South Korea 2 years ago, and now the Commies are attacking! It’s all the liberals’ fault for not standing up for out allies!”

  13. frankb says

Beck’s anger is justified??? Since when do artists not get to work with icons of our times? Since when do architects have to answer to Glenn Beck? The tragedy of 9/11 was the excuse that Bush Jr. and the neocons made of it to invade Iraq. That is where tens of thousands of people were killed and that is what is bankrupting the U.S. The message of 9/11 is much deeper than what people like Glenn realize.

Wait!!! We also have to boycott any ships that remind us of the Titanic, any buildings that look like the Alfred P. Murrah building, or any structures that look like the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory!!11!!!

    • F says

The people in the States who are still pissed at Japan for Pearl Harbor think that way. Saw a veteran get yelled at for driving a Japanese automobile once – he was supposed to be “ashamed of himself”.

  15. jimvj says

It’s not just that Beck & his ilk are wrong for thinking that everything is about them (& the USA), it is that the heightened sensitivity to 9/11 plays right into the hands of the terrorists. The Beck mindset (& unfortunately, Olbermann’s too) is exactly what Osama wanted to incite; a mindset that is driving us to spend trillions chasing ghosts; that is leveraging the acts of terrorists to obscene heights.

OTOH, after the attack on Mumbai, the citizens there made a public vow that normal life would resume as soon as possible; that the gunmen’s heinous acts would not disrupt them any longer than absolutely necessary. They made a point of not postponing planned events like marriages; the terrorists did not capture their minds.

To promote skepticism/critical thinking I wrote some questions for the Christian believer. Mefiante from South African Skeptics made a good translation. She is now working at the last part. The most sophisticated questions. Are you able to put the link to these questions at your blog.

    Thank you very much,

    The translation
The first one who did this, was Jonathan. This is a good example.

Some people, like the Beck-Obermans of the world have no idea there is a whole world who doesn’t think about America everyday and have no idea who Glenn Beck or Oberman are. Luckily S. Koreans are untainted by that crap side of America and likely only know Beck the crazy singer and oberman the pointy-mose police dog.

It would be very difficult for two tall, side-by-side rectangular buildings to not look like the WTC.
If I squint, these ones look exactly like the WTC in the process of blowing up.
    But the squinting is necessary.
